Oak Steakhouse- Alexandria
Compared to the last time we ate at Oak Steakhouse, we were less impressed. The salads were excellent, but the steak frites and the roasted mushrooms were just fine. We've had better. Again, we were going to be seated by the kitchen and we asked for a quieter table. It took some time to get a different table and once seated it too a rather long time for the server to show up. He did apologize for being slow, but then after taking our drink orders, disappeared again for a long time before taking our dinner orders. As with the food, the service and ambiance could have been better. We'll give it a few more trys, because it is a menu we like.
Had dinner at Oak to celebrate a promotion. What a great experience! Excellent steaks and service. I highly recommend Oak for every day dining, date night, or a special occasion.
Unmatched food and service. Attention to detail each and every time I visit.
I really want this to be a good go-to restaurant (I'm an Old Town resident), but there's some work to be done and I don't know what can be done about the interior noise level. Mixed experience with the steak frites - good for one companion, mine was somewhat gristly and not flavorful. Service was slow - it was a crowded Saturday night, and the waitstaff looked stretched. All were very pleasant, however. For the prices I expect much better. The noise level made normal conversation impossible. Maybe it's better during the week - I'll definitely try it again, but won't be back if the experience is the same.
Better than any DC steakhouse, including Bourbon Steak.
Great service for top of the line steak house. Like most everything is a la Carte. It’s a bit on the expensive side even for a good steakhouse, but other than that everything was great. A nice addition to Alexandria
The wedge salad and cauliflower were delicious and the steaks were perfectly grilled. Bernaise sauce added a nice touch. Cocktails were very tasty too. Our server Olivia was terrific - friendly and efficient. A bit noisy at 8pm but as the crowd size dropped it became a cozier dining experience.
Olivia is a rockstar! We are so glad you enjoyed your dining experience with us.
Old Town Alexandria’s new Go-To. Business dinners, cool bar scene, special occasion, date night Orr any night- you can’t go wrong.
Thanks for your five star rating!
Open and welcoming space. Excellent food. Wait staff was good and knowledgeable. Prompt service but not rushed.
Thanks for your five star rating!
We were excited to try Oak Steakhouse, a newcomer to our neighborhood. The ambiance is great (with one exception, noted below). Our server was great. The food was ... only so-so, though. Our mac-and-cheese side dish, for instance, was perhaps the blandest mac-and-cheese any of us had ever tasted. And the cocktails need lots of improvement if people are going to shell out $15 for them.
About the ambiance: The restaurant has floor-to-high-ceiling windows. If you are seated facing west before the sun goes down, you'll be blinded by sunlight. The restaurant really needs to install some sort of window treatments on the west windows.
Dear DCdiner, Your feedback is valuable to us. We are actually going to have blinds installed in the next week or so! I hope you'll join us again and try some more of our side dish offerings!
Good experience, food was great!! The Tomahawk was good to the bone !!! Our Dog Gizmo Enjoyed his treat when we got home..
we will be returning!! Thank You Ty!!
Ty and the Oak Steakhouse family were glad to have you! Come back soon so Gizmo can have another treat!
Great addition to Alexandria!
Thanks for your five star rating!
Everything was fantastic except my particular steak. I had the steak-frites, which comes with a cheaper cut than most of their other offerings. I ordered medium rare and it seemed to be cooked to the right done-ness, but it was unchewably tough and slightly livery tasting. They happily replaced the whole dish with an improved steak, which was good but still not great. (My personal theory is that cheaper steaks shouldn't be thick-cut. A thinner (3/4 - 1") steak would have more delicious caramelization per ounce and but would still stay chewable if cooked right.). The drinks, service, fries, hummus, Brussels sprouts were all fantastic as was their service. I suspect their more high-end steak options are better.
Thank you, SloanL, for all your detailed feedback. We hope to see you return soon to try more of our menu offerings and steak cuts!
Oak is a perfect addition to Old Town. An upscale destination in a part of town that’s growing, but still apart from the sometimes overcrowded King Street. My only complaint, and it’s a small one, is that the macaroni and cheese was a little too rich. Everything else was delicious, even the brussel sprouts, and I hate brussel sprouts.
I am so glad you enjoyed our brussels sprouts! That's our hottest side dish!
Let Open Table know it was our Anniversary as well as the front staff people when we arrived. Our table was not ready, so we went to the bar, no problem, except the bartender obviously didn’t want to be there. She kept rolling her eyes at other employees close to her, no smile, seemed stressed. To her credit though, she did make a decent Manhattan and Negroni. Finally got to our table.... but at first they wanted to put us in a tiny isolated table by the hostess stand. Hello! How can you experience the dynamic of a restaurant in that isolated space. Told them it wasn’t acceptable but they said it’s romantic....I said we’ve been married long enough and don’t need to be so alone....also I’ll sure the service would have been terrible there since it’s an out of the way table. Once we go to a decent table Ty was our very nice waiter.
He said he’d take care of us and he was pretty good. My first course was the Ahi tuna tartare. I know there are los of variations of it but this was almost non edible. It was like canned tuna in a thick aioli...had no flavor of fresh ahi raw tuna....totally not good in my opinion. My husbands Heirloom tomato salad was ok. The bread rolls are good even though you have to pay for them.....which I find strange at a steakhouse when you have to pay for every side dish. Ty suggested The bacon olives for my husbands martini, then noticed on the bill that they charged $3 for the olive in the martini!! My filet and my husbands New York Strip were good....not the best...but good. Ty brought us the bill and never acknowledged our anniversary. I read a lot of reviews about glasses of champagne or a complimentary desert....but nothing. We told him it was our anniversary and the front staff knew as well. Maybe they don’t feel they need to make anyone feel special on a special occasion anymore. This steakhouse has a lot of polishing to do....will never be top contender in the DC area. No desire to go back.
Dear scjordi, I remember saying goodnight on your way out! I am glad Ty gave you good service. I would love for the opportunity to chat more about your dining experience. Please reach out to me, Eric, personally!
Overpriced. Side of mashed potatoes allegedly for the table at $11 were barely enough for one person. Parker rolls great. Steaks ok, but server gave us the wrong ones and we didn’t figure it out until it was too late to switch. Priced like Capital Grille but falls short.
Dear Anonymous, I am so sorry that your experience fell short of our high standards. Please reach out to me, Eric, personally you wish to dine with us. We always strive to provide great value, service, and food & drink.
It was a great evening with wonderful food! Would definitely come back.
Thanks for the five star rating!
Old town needed a good steakhouse and this is a great new addition to the town. Not the cheapest night out but if you're looking to splurge this is definitely the place. Meal was worth every penny. Ambiance is warm and welcoming. Service was good not great. I think we got a little more attention from our server after realizing my husband knew the sous chef. Either way we'll be coming back.
We can't wait to see you again!
Second time in as many months. Excellent service, food was great! A high price point but if the steak continues to remain outstanding we will certainly be back.
Thanks for the 5 star review!
A large, attractive space with high ceilings and a relatively high noise level. Ordered Steak Frites and the Butcher steak came very close to the high level the hanger steaks of the late, lamented Les Halles of Pennsylvania Avenue. The fries were even better! The service was cordial, attentive and informative. Definitely worths return visit.
Thank you, RobertS!
Britli and team took amazing care of us. So much so I wouldn't have cared if the food wasn't that great, but it, too, was amazing. We'll be back next week! Can't wait!
Next week! Amazing. See you soon!
Pricey steak but easily one of the best steaks I’ve had. Lovely wine list, sides tend to be decadent but delish. Oysters were fresh and tasty as an appetizer.
I am glad to hear you had a lovely time!
First time visiting at the recommendation of a friend, loved the food and service! Would definitely recommend.
We are glad you enjoyed your first visit!
Watch out steakhouses, there's a new kid in town who does it better. From host to Service to incredible menu to take-home packaging and departing scones... this is the place to go.
Thank you so much, Gregg!
Great addition to the Old Town dining scene. Nice to have a modern restaurant as opposed to all the saloon type places along King St. Only reason it didn’t get five stars was the steak in the steak frites was a little small. For the same price you get an ounce or two more at Bastille and Le Refuge. Overall, the place is great. Great food, service, dining experience. We look forward to going back soon.
Thank you for your review and your feedback!
It should not take 45 minutes to have my bottle of wine presented to me. Ultimately, the wine served was fine but communication, responsiveness and attentive service frustrated the evening.
OVEE, I am so sorry it took so long for wine service. That is not part of the standards we set for our establishment! I would love to hear more about your experience if you'd like to reach out to me, Eric.
The food was absolutely flavorless. Do not eat the Mac and cheese or the mashed potatoes they are two of the most mundane dishes I have ever had. Paying for "bread service" was absurd. I paid for 250 dollars of disappointment. My wife was just as dissatisfied as I was.
Dear Anonymous, I am so sorry to hear that your experience was a disappointment. I would love to see you back and personally ensure that you and your wife feel the hospitality, food, and value of the restaurant.
I was there with my boyfriend for my anniversary and the treatment we got was the BEST ever!!!!
Our waiter Tye (I hope that’s how he spelled it) was awesome and made it extra special for us!
The food was amazing! If you are lucky enough to have Tye... take his recommendations! He will not steer you wrong. The food was amazing, the place beautiful and the service top notch! Make sure you make this one of your stops!!!
First time at this relatively new Old Town steak house, like most others part of a chain. But this one makes an effort to distinguish itself by offering more than just the predictable standard steakhouse appetizers, salads, and sides. Even the standards show some imagination and the non-standard items can be really extraordinary – e.g., the corn agnolotti and the marrow appetizers, a wonderfully flavorful heirloom tomato salad, the creamed corn side with just enough truffle flavor as not to overwhelm the delicious sweetness of the corn. Of course, the whole point is the quality of the steaks offered. We shared the 36-ounce dry-aged porterhouse, which was plenty for two after the rolls and appetizers. The steak was nicely crusted and had a real dry-aged flavor, although a bit underdone from the medium rare we had requested. The béarnaise sauce was nothing like it should have been – no discernible tarragon, no tang of vinegar or shallots , the texture a sort of mousseline– really pointless. I don’t know what that portends for the other sauces offered. Service by Flavia and the rest of the team was excellent throughout, attentive, professional, but not intrusive (no “how’s that tasting” every two minutes). Unlike other high-end steak places, Oak allows patrons to bring their own wine for a reasonable corkage fee and allows more bottles than any other restaurant I know of. Wine service is expertly handled. The only real downsides to what was on the whole a very satisfying dining experience (and discovery) were slow production of the appetizers (on a not very busy night) and a very noisy room – a defect Oak shares with every new restaurant, alas. Oak is definitely a most welcome addition to the Alexandria fine dining scene and one to which we will be glad to return.
Thanks for the 5 stars!
Great addition to the neighborhood. A little pricey considering most entrees are a la carte. Shout out to Olivia, our server, who was fabulous and even gave us a couple complimentary dishes! We’ll be back!
Olivia is always fabulous indeed! Thank you so much!
Love the new Oak Restaurant and the Manager Zach! The restaurant setting is so beautiful and the menu selection perfect. Extensive wine list but most of all love the wait staff. Olivia is the best - so attentive, so caring about our dining experience and really friendly. If you reserve ask for Olivia’s station. Have been to Oak 3 times this week.
You’ll love it too! ❣️👍
Thank you, AnitaC!
It was great!
Thanks for the 5 star review!
My friend and I were celebrating her birthday and wedding. We ordered the Porterhouse for two along with the bread basket, Brussels sprouts and Mac and cheese.
The steak was tasty. Brussels sprouts were excellent. I was disappointed in the mac and cheese. It was bland and had no flavor.
Manager also gave us extra sides to try. The cream corn and fries were welcome additions.
Staff and management very friendly! I would definitely go again.
Stephanie, we would love to see you again!
We went to celebrate a significant birthday. The food was excellent. The service was great. There was one hiccup. Our entrees were slow to arrive at the table, but when they did, they were superb. Management arrived mid-gap and apologized for the wait (before we said anything) and then comp’d us the meal. Class act.
Top quality beef. Seared ahi starter as good as it gets. Parker House rolls to die for. Fabulous chocolate cake. Creative cocktails. Attractive dining room. Very friendly and competent servers. Watching the open kitchen and the expediter directing service like an orchestra conductor is great entertainment. Tremendous bargain during Alexandria Restaurant Week, but we will come back on special occasions at full price.
We had heard a lot of good things about Oak Steakhouse and were glad we had a chance to experience dining there while taking advantage of Restaurant Week. Portions were generous, food very good, service efficient and friendly, all with a nice ambiance.
Wonderful addition to the Alexandria restaurant scene. At last we have a top of the line steakhouse in our neighbourhood! Everything about our meal was superb, including ambience, food quality, and service. The steak was one of the most tender and flavorful I have ever experienced (cowboy ribeye). Highly recommended.
Love the ambiance and the service is awesome! Will be back for sure. The one issue was we were full and got dessert to go and it was so disappointing. I understand strawberry shortcake is hard to do in s to go container but there was a teaspoon of strawberry compote and the biscuits were tiny and tasteless. Will have to try something in the dining room next time and give them another chance
Meat was cooked to perfection (as were the sides). Parker House rolls off the charts good!
Oak Steakhouse has great potential. My hubby and I dined there on a Saturday night. The food was mostly outstanding. We had some the fries and shrimp cocktail to start. The fries were great. The shrimp cocktail did not live up to my standards. The gin cocktail sauce was not good..I would recommend also offering regular cocktail sauce on the side to let the diner decide which to use. The gin sauce ruined the shrimp in my opinion. We ordered steaks (filet and bone-in ribeye) and they were phenomenal. I had mine cooked medium rare and my hubby got his medium and they were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The sides...mashed potatoes, mushrooms, and brussel sprouts were excellent. Even the chocolate cake for dessert was yummy. The bad...was the service. The service was sub-par. The waitstaff clearly needs additional training and need to be more attentive, especially given the price range for this restaurant. Long delays in coming to our table before, during, and after eating. Waiter didn't check on us after our steaks were delivered to make sure they were cooked correctly...and I had to flag a different waiter down to deliver a glass of red wine that I asked to be specifically served with the steak. We saw the manager making the rounds to try and appease several unhappy customers..so it appeared to be a problem overall with the waitstaff. I would like to return because the food was so good, but the service gets a D. Hope that improves.
Thank you, TiffanyA! I am sorry to hear that service was below par. Please reach out to me, Eric, personally the next time you choose to dine with us. I will guarantee that you have perfect, seamless service!
