O-Ku - DC
The 120-seat restaurant also houses a lounge specializing in Japanese whiskey as well as a 40-seat rooftop bar, both featuring a sleek industrial design to complement the surrounding neighborhood.
Great Sushi Restaurant! This was a great place for a nice date night. The sushi bar was a fun and cozy spot for us to enjoy eating together and also watching them make our food. We had a wonderful dining experience!
Omakase was excellent! The chef gave us alternating flavors and textures so every dish was a new experience. We will definitely be going back
Food was great. Service was great. Ambiance was great.
Amazing , best sushi I’ve had. Ask for rooftop seating , beautiful
Food is fresh and great service
Luke is really personable
So good! Luke was an awesome server and I would go back a million times over! Thanks O Ku!!
Fantastic food all the way around, everything we ate was delish. Server was friendly. Ate on the roof in perfect weather. Would definitely go back. Highly recommended.
O-Ku has a lovely interior and opportunities for a stunning view over Union Market if you sit on the upstairs patio. Our servers were very friendly and polite but did forget several requests (like serving sushi with no soy sauce which we requested a few times, getting our initial sushi order wrong, and forgetting to bring an order of rice after multiple requests) - However, they were apologetic and did remove an item from our bill and worked to be very attentive after a rough start.
My biggest disappointment was the value. The price points were slightly elevated probably due to location but I still had an expectation for a certain standard. Certain menu items were good to tasty while some were quite lack luster. The chicken wings and yakitori were tasty and done well, but with the same flavor you'd get at any Japanese restaurant. The gyoza lacked flavor and had a tough shell. Our aburi salmon was over seared with a fairly small slice for the cost of $4 for one piece and the anago, while tasty, was again the tiniest cut for a $6 singular piece. (The sushi in the gallery of the O-ku website was far more interesting and generous than the reality I experienced). My $11 Umelicious cocktail (not an outrageous price for DC in my opinion) tasted of the vodka, but was devoid of an ume flavor and basically tasted like a vodka soda.
Overall, expect what you will from a tourist destination- a lot of cutting of costs, high prices, with a few things that shine. If you go, opt for the 2nd floor outdoor patio at sunset, and it will make the trip more worth it.
Food was excellent, service was attentive, very nice place, excellent happy hour deals. Only critique is that the music was a bit loud...will go back.
GREAT neighborhood find for sushi, featuring a sleek and beautifully decorated interior and upstairs patio. The sushi was outstanding, and the chefs' attention to quality and detail was fully evident in its flavor and presentation. This isn't your typical churn-and-burn sushi joint. Highly recommended for date nights, groups and special occasions.
Great food, great atomosphere. One of the best places I’ve eaten in DC.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We appreciate your feedback and we are glad you enjoyed your time here! We hope to see you again soon! Thanks, O-Ku Team
O-ku was amazingly accommodating to our larger-than-expected group. Excellent service and delicious food, as always!
Love this Sushi restaurant! Great rooftop bar and seating.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We are glad you enjoyed our ambiance! We do hope to see you again soon! Thanks, O-Ku Team
Our server was the sweetest ever. We felt so welcome and appreciated!
The service and food is always wonderful! I wish Oku was in a different neighborhood because the traffic to get there is super stressful. My husband and I always love it once we het there!
My friend and I really enjoyed our first experience at O-Ku. My salmon skin nigiri sushi was on point (thanks, Richard!), and the service was par excellance (thanks, Matthew!). The manager on duty even stopped by to greet us, and I always appreciate such detail. I'll definitely be back -- between either the second-level outdoor seating to the wide couches available, the restaurant is very inviting, and a hidden gem of the Union Market neighborhood.
Fun spot, cool decor, great service, food is decent. I’d go again - especially during happy hour.
Thanks for your kind words! We'm glad you enjoyed the happy hour and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks, O-Ku Team
My husband and I are serious San Francisco foodies, and we loved the entire experience. From the cocktail to the sake, the very friendly and delightful Athena, our server, and of course the beautiful and delicious food- it was as good as it gets. The small plates - the tuna and the salmon- were each very creative with superb fish. We ordered the arubi toro twice! The crunchy prawn roll was as good as it looked. We very much enjoyed the succulent chicken Tovar’s, and the mushroom. Can’t recall the other dishes but you get the idea. There was nothing we wouldn’t recommend!
Thank you so much for your kind words for our food, staff and beverages! We really appreciate both the review and your visit! We hope to see you again soon, hopefully the next time you're in town! Best, O-Ku Team
Phenomenal. The ambience. The service. The drinks. The food. The food. The food. Must try all the signature nigiri pieces, and go heavy on the starter plates. Especially anything otoro. Definitely will be in heavy rotation.
Thank you for your kind words and especially your emphasis on our food! We are glad to hear you enjoyed your visit and we hope to see you again soon! Best, O-Ku Team
We couldn’t be happier with our experience here. We went on a Sunday, which was low key, for a 5pm dinner. The omakase sushi was a phenomenal experience and SO delicious, and we sat at the sushi bar where we could see everything being made. Our server Tyler was friendly and knowledgeable, and the O-Ku team even gave my husband and I champagne and a little card to top off the experience because it was his birthday. We will absolutely be coming back! ❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words, and we are glad you enjoyed your experience! We are happy you chose to celebrate with us, and we hope to see you again soon! Best, O-Ku Team
Amazing !! Love the staff !!
Outstanding service. Fantastic meal. Great ambiance from the rooftop. We loved it!
Very good food. Fresh and well prepared. Was able to get happy hour pricing, before 7pm. Made it a real deal. Had a couple rolls and the beef tartare. The seaweed salad was also tasty and a value. Specialty drinks also get a thumbs up. The gin drink is a deal at happy hour. I will return, area is great with some parking
Service and vibe are top notch. Chef needs to work out flavoring on the Robata Grill a little bit. Sushi is excellent.
Hands down, the best restaurant experience we've ever had. The food was incredible and the staff was so friendly and helpful. We'll be back again and again
Thanks for your kind words and for coming to dine with us! We hope to see you again soon! Best, O-Ku Team
Great food. Pricey but worth it. The restaurant is beautiful too.
Thanks so much for coming to O-Ku! We are glad you enjoyed your experience, and we hope to see you again soon! Best, O-Ku Team
One word: AMAZING. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left, it was 5 star service and I'm hella picky. Our server Amanda was super knowledgeable and knew every.single.item. I can't remember the last I had a server like her: attentive, courteous and passionate (the rest of the staff is just as amazing but I have to give credit where it's due!).
The food was on another level. The fish was fresh and the drinks were tasteful. I ordered the salmon, chu toro crudo and the lobster from the grill - outstanding. Their sashimi and makimono were both delicious but next time I will invest more in their sashimi because it's that good.
I cannot wait to come back here :)
Thanks so much for your kind words and we appreciate the shout-out to our staff and Amanda! We are looking forward to your next visit and hope to see you soon! Best, O-Ku Team
Great food and atmosphere! Really enjoyed the sushi and the happy hour is a great deal with half off the mainstream rolls. People should definitely go!
Loved the location and the vibe. Service and staff were friendly and we felt amazing the whole time
Beautiful space, excellent service and the quality of the fish was so great.
I would definitely return and recommend to others.
Food was very mediocre and definitely not worth the ticketed price. Sushi was average at best, akin to home delivered sushi. The precut fish for sashimi and sushi was being taken out from plastic containers, the fried food was soggy. Overall it was a very expensive and disappointing experience
Food was fabulous and the atmosphere was great! Would definitely go back!
Food was fantastic, I recommend the nigiri and the lobster robata- they made my dad’s birthday super special and for that I am grateful. Also the service was amazing and we really appreciated the unique ambiance of being able to watch the sushi chefs work and grill on the robata. Best new restaurant in the union market area, especially if you like creative sushi.
Wonderful food choices and a great bar. Rooftop deck was very pleasant. Service maintained that balance of being very attentive without becoming annoying. Only downside is the acoustics and noise level indoors. I’d recommend!
Food quality and originality is excellent but not consistent. We ordered the fish special which was over cooked. Last time we ordered that and it was excellent. When told, they apologized and took it off the bill which was appreciated.
Service on the top terrace is very slow and needs improvement. We had to wait more than 40 mins for our Sushi order. They acknowledged the delay and offered us free wine to help with the wait which was nice.
Delightful date night spot. Parking for the whole area is very tight, plan accordingly.
Beautiful place to dine everyone was nice willing to help u with the menu food was delicious bartender really make good cocktail so come out and treat yourself
It was a very nice place, but we were seated inside on a beautiful evening, it was only 6:00pm and there were still plenty of spaces on the outside deck, so I do not appreciate that we were not given an opportunity to sit outside. When we did learn their was space, we were advised “it was too late.”
