Guests seemingly non-existent to wait staff scurrying around. Outdoor seating and service isn't up to par with what I had inside a few years ago. No beers on tap. Alcohol menu doesn't make too much sense from a value and/or pricing perspective. Water and relatively cold bread took 10+ minutes to arrive at the table. Very slow service with 50% of the tables empty outside on the patio. Food allergies not taken seriously, had to send item back. It was comped, but could have lead to a dangerous allergic reaction.
Had to tell the waiter 3x to bring my drinks. Took so long for it to come. Broccoli rabe was too salty.
Never ate on the terrace and never will again. The service was deplorable and only one girl was working while the guys were huddled joking around and probably sharing her tips too? Nothing came on time or at once. We were 4 people, not tourists used to bad service, and none of the appetizers or entrees were delivered complete or at the same time. There was a Dover Sole for 2 that was dropped on 1 plate and when we flagged down someone for another plate he brought a bread plate which was absurd. After the Sole was half gone a plate arrived. As for dessert which arrived 45 mins later, it had been ordered with a port. The port was canceled by us as it was forgotten. When it was brought after not during dessert, it seemed to be complimentary for the careless mistake, but appeared on the bill. Will never eat ou on “the ill-equipped terrace” with the under trained servers who don’t value their jobs. This is what happens when you go from 4 star restaurants to having too many and don’t care that they’re all now 1 star. Sadly reputations are easily forgotten no matter how good, when absentee ownership results in embarrassment such as this meal.
Great attentive server & staff, as always, & fabulous food & drink.*:)
I was in NYC for an event and this was one of the places I was so excited to try. It was a huge disappointment. I arrived when lunch service started so the dining area was empty. The host stand was already crowded with people. It was very disorderly and the host was super unfriendly. However, we were still sat within our reservation time. We were led onto the patio, even though I did not request to be there (mind you the whole dining room was empty). The first thing I noticed was that my chair had a cushion w/ a large stain, which made me uncomfortable to be sitting in it. The table was so close to the shrub that it was constantly poking at me. It took a while for my server to acknowledge us. He was too occupied with some other guests that I felt like we were neglected.
The food was mediocre at best, it was nicely presented but every dish had something wrong with it. We ordered the lunch pre-fixe. First course we had calamari and tuna tartare. The calamari was bland and needed salt. The tuna tartare was drowned in a super acidic sauce that overwhelmed the entire dish. For entrees we had seared black bass and veal milanese. The black bass was actually cooked perfectly and very well seasoned. However, the veal was overcooked and smothered with cheese on top and the "salad" underneath was barely edible as it was covered in a vinaigrette that had way too much vinegar. For dessert we had a passion-fruit pavlova and the chocolate cake. The cake was decent and the passion-fruit sauce in the pavlova was so sweet it tasted like straight syrup.
While eating all this our server made no table visits. I had to flag someone for a napkin and it was never brought to me. My biggest pet peeve was the piece of cold sourdough bread that given out before our meals. It still sat at our table even during the dessert course and when I paid the bill. If you are coming from out of town don't waste your time here.
food was not up to the standard at all. I m a regular diner at this location and other Jean Georges locations.... the trout on crispy rice was not of the usual quality, the tuna tartar on avocado lacked taste... (the kale salad was good), the dessert was also a big disappointment.
Waited 15 minutes before getting a menu or a glass of water. After that the service was still exceptionally slow. The hostess apologized and said a manager would be over but he never came.
It was great as usual. The only negative was that the waiter was the only one serving the terrace and seemed overwhelmed.
Don't bother. Sitting out in very uncomfortable chairs eating the most mediocre overpriced food just because they are part of the Jean George Nougatine. My $17 Gruner Veltliner was warm, Shrimp and avocado salad tasted like Costco prawns over wilted lettuce from a bag smothered in what tasted like dressing from a bottle. The $35 veal Milanese was so salty as to be inedible and sat on a pile of arugula with some end of season mealy heirloom tomatoes with nothing on them at all.
Seriously- Europan down the street could make this dish more tasty. Cross this off the list.
The food wasn't good so nothing to do with the aclaimed quality of the restaurant.
It wasn't a good evening
Great place to get excellent food in casual setting. Ideal for drinks and a bite to eat
Midiocre food, horrible service. Tremendously disappointed
The best food and service. Lunch special is an amazing bargain. No improvements would have been possible. The deck is a great place to have a quiet conversional meal right in the heart of the City. We look forward to going again.
A Monday night reservation for two on the terrace was a disaster. It was with great enthusiasm that I put a reservation in place at what is a New York institution.
Upon arriving, we were taken to our table on the terrace and seated. After 10 minutes, we had not been offered a drink of any type, nor had we been seen to by service staff or offered a menu. We were then asked what our water preference was, and were provided with a food menu. Alas still no offer of a drink!
When the water arrived, I requested a wine/cocktail list. Another 15 minutes elapsed, and by this time, we had been seated for 25 minutes, and we’re still to receive a drink list. It was at this point, that we rose and departed the restaurant.
A thoroughly disappointing experience. As we collected a bag from the front reservation desk, I mentioned our experience to the front desk operator, who said he would pass on the feedbackon his manager.
A number of other patrons were requesting the check, dessert, their drinks etc multiple times and there was clearly an issue with service or lack there of on the evening. The terrace seemed to have limited staff, whereas inside Nougatine, there appeared to be no issue with staffing.
We expected far better, and were genuinely excited. Sadly after this experience, we won’t be back.
Reservation not honored. By "mistake" my reservations did not appear. Someone remembered me and did me the "favor" of giving me a table. Will not go back and will see them closed in a year
Top essen. Sehr besondere Qualität. Service auch sehr gut. Ein bisschen zu steif am Empfang aber für den Preis bei einem mittagsmenu der hamemr
We went for lunch on Sunday, $38 for lunch menu. Best deal in town for an expirience that the word Perfect won't be close to describe. Run for it!
Food ok (given the price) however poor service. We were not looked after dispite the fact the place was not full: Bread showed up late. Empty glasses were ignored etc.
We will not go back. Which is a pity as the location is nice.
Wonderful, as expected, from beginning to end. The tuna starter was outstanding, as were all our main courses (salmon, hake, bass). The lava cake will make any others in the future into only pale imitations. The only slight drawback, perhaps unavoidable in NYC, was the drumming from the street musician. It put a slight cramp into our ability to converse. Amazingly, when the drumming stopped, it was almost pin-drop quiet, despite being outdoors at Columbus Circle. \
A wonderful experience, and one we hope to repeat soon.
Really bad service, food has gone downhill- total ripoff. Have been a dozen times but will not return.
Food was excellent but service was not what I have encountered at Nougatine in the past. I shouldn't need to chase staff (some seemingly very inexperienced) for the obvious at a Jean-Georges restaurant.
Amazing food. Sitting on the terrace after dark is not the best way to enjoy the food. I would not recommend terrace dining after dark.
We're seated in a corner, a bit removed from the main section. Was not a pleasant view. Pasta was great. Watermelon salad was large, but strangely uninteresting. Service lacked.
The restaurant week menu was awesome. Enjoyed everything that we ate!
Fois gras brûlée and shrimp salad are amazing! Outdoor dining was great.
Great food, good service
The moral of the story should be do not to have dinner during restaurant week , first we waited for about an hour before being seated and the the service was rushed and the servers were overwhelmed but the food also was not up to par , the fish was not cooked properly and too salty , all and all not a good experience particularly because we frequent this restaurant often and then can do better!!!
Always enjoy myself out on the terrace during this time of year. Staff is always changing so sometimes a little bit inattentive.
Highly disappointment! Service beyond any cheap dinner! Rude and unprofessional! No clue how to treat customers. We've been there many many times, this time was the last time. I don't need snooty hostess or waitress with that price tag!!
The lighting in the outdoor dining area was way too dim! I could not see the meal served in front of me. It's not romantic when it's next to pitch black.
Loved the place. The terrace, the environment, worths the dinner, cocktail great. Food was ok. Given the chef's reoutation I expected more creativity in the dishes.
I booked Nougatine during Restaurant week not knowing that it was the outside aka Terrace and not Jean George...website is confusing as this was my first time attending this restaurant. Then when they called to confirm my res and noted is was for Jean George and not Nougatine..she failed to note that they are basically the same restaurant but Jean George was the indoor restaurant and Nougatine was the adjoining outdoor space which is nothing special when compared to the much nicer Jean George indoor restaurant.
The service was ok as we sat for quite a while before anyone took our order. My salad was delicious, but my fish was a bit dry and not hot and dessert was good. Would I go back , no and would I recommend, no..as there are far better choices in NYC my biggest disappointment was not dining indoors at Jean George and this could have all been avoided had the person who confirmed my res noting that my initial reservation at Jean George was indoors and then she changed my res to Nougatine ..I would have much rather had my original reservation remain as was, but Nougatine was just ok I expected much more from Jean George
Fabulous brunch on a beautiful sunny Sunday. The food was excellent, the presentation beautiful and the service with Tatiana and her crew was fantastic.
Restaurant came highly recommended so expectations were high and completely met. This is a high end establishment that lives up to its reputation. Definitely going back!
I'm hesitant to leave a review because I want to keep this gem from becoming too popular. Nougatine Terrace is a perfect summertime oasis in the middle of Columbus Circle. We ordered the Restaurant Week lunch. Phenomenal value. Totally delicious. Server was great. Just the right mix of attentive yet respectful of our space.
Sitting outside with great food and good company. What could be better?
If you want an expensive night out with reliably good food and fantastic service and great atmosphere, this is your place. We had a sushi starter that was to die for. Listen to your waiter when he/she makes recommendations. Mine told me that the lobster burger got mixed reviews but i was so intrigued I ordered it. It was terrible and learned my lesson - always listen to your waiter. I still had a lovely night and the fries that came with said lobster burger compensated a bit for the disappointing main course (which I can only describe as tasting like the ocean in the worst way)
i will still go back. my daughter loved her pasta dish. And the thing about a G-J restaurant, you will definitely have at least one memorable dish that you will still be thinking about for days. (our sushi thing was sort of fried and flavorful and fantastic -- I could have eaten 8 servings)
This is a special occasion place unless you like spending $200 on a meal for two (including wine by the glass) I loved my waiter -- wish I remembered his name but Jean Georges clearly cares about having experienced and knowledgeable wait staff in his restaurants.
We debated even going as it’s in the Trump Hotel and had second thoughts. We tried it.
Had to send the beef tenderloin back as it was over cooked. Had to send the lobster back as it, too, was over cooked. Maybe we caught them on a bad night. Both dishes replaced quickly with satisfactory cooking temperature.
The cheap patio furniture was a turnoff and soured the romantic vibe we were looking for. The service and staff was ok, but nothing special. Maybe I had unfair expectations about this restaurant.
Go try it, maybe you’re experience will be better than ours.
Love space , food etc.. unfortunately.. ad hoc "musicians "... outside on Columbus Circle totally spoil the oasis that exists within..
