Nonnina Ratings and Reviews
We stop off for dinner because our normal place we full.
The normal place would have be Petterino's.
Now Nonnina was great place with good staff.
They check you coat.
We were seated in the southeast side with a window looking south. We could see the winter falling looking to the northeast. The was just wonderful winter view.
The food selection very much Italian
Fritto Misto (calamari and zucchini)
Shrimp "Fra Diavola" ( shrimps and sauce were very good. T he ink pasta was ok.
Pappardelle Duck (yes and yes) was just wonderful with grand taste and the pasta was to the teeth.
The pistachio gelato need some work.
We will return because of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌈
Noninna's has probably become our favorite restaurant in Chicago. This visit I had the special pasta that was really delicious dumplings with spinach & pine nuts. My husband had the ravioli de zucca, which is butternut squash ravioli. We shared a nice Caesar salad & gelato for dessert. We made reservations for New Year's Eve there already.
Our Nonnina's dinner was outstanding! The waitstaff, the manager, Juan, and the delicious food all added to the perfect dinner. The polpo was truly the best I've ever had!
I have to be honest here-- the greeter was unfriendly. No warmth at all. The bathroom needed attention, too.
Quite loud. The acoustics are rough. Not a great date spot in my opinion, I am not a Fan of the tiny two person tables shoe-horned within inches of other diners. It didn’t really matter because I was with good company, but it was an hour between arrival and food served.
The manager and hosts were nice folks.
First off, realize that Nonnina's is one of our favorite restaurants when we are staying in the River North area. The only reason why this wasn't another 5 star evening out was because we were seated in the outdoor portion of the restaurant. It is covered but there was still a breeze and because we were on the outer end of the seating area it was still chilly. We didn't want to have to dine with our coats on.
WE tried Nonnina for the first time on a Saturday night, before the Symphony. We had a reservation, but were happy to be seated quickly, although the restaurant was busy handling all of the "opening" traffic for the dinner crowd. Our chopped antipasto salad was refreshing and contained many textures, spicy salami and chick peas.
The cocktail selection was very diverse and all were named for Italian women. My Daniela was perfectly tart and light!
For dinner we shared the Carboara and Mulfada with asparagus, mushrooms, and garlic. The pasta was tender and smooth, and the vegetables were rich and had a good browned depth of flavor. We will return!
I really want to love this restaurant. The food was great! But, the service was beyond slow and the restaurant is incredibly loud. The drinks were delicious. We started with some appetizers that were excellent. There were three of us for dinner. Appetizers came out in less than 10 minutes. We waited over an hour and 20 minutes to get our entrees. Two of which were fresh pasta dishes.
Again, the food was really great. But, about 45 minutes into our wait...the waiter came over and asked if I had the Braciole. I noticed on his notepad it said 3 next to that meal. When our entrees finally arrived, I did not get what I ordered. I believe they ran out and served me short ribs instead. They tasted great, but it was a major letdown. When I questioned the server about it he was like "oh no...that was absolutely the braciole". It was definitely not!
Noninna is a very nice neighborhood restaurant. We dined early on a Friday, arriving around 5:45pm. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. Instead of being seated inside, we were taken to a table on an enclosed outdoor area. It would have been much nicer to have been asked if we preferred one of their cozy booths. It was a bit cold on the outdoor area. Food---once we finally had a server, was good. Bread was brought out cold, as it seemed was common, so it was not so inviting. Entree's were very good. Fresh pasta, great sauces, wonderful flavors.
Citrus sauce on grilled salmon is a refreshing change from typical presentation. Fingerling potatoes done to crisp perfection. Wish calamari were done as crisp as potatoes. Risotto was cooked to right consistency, which is hard to find. Good wine selections
The environment was cozy and nice; the food was delicious, freshly made with great flavor! I'm not big on tomato based dishes (raw tomato allergy), so the perfect dish for me was the "Bucatini Carbonara"; Fabulous flavor, didn't have to add any salt nor pepper; perfect as prepared! A special reminder, if you're not a fan of somewhat raw egg yolk(myself included), you definitely want to have it excluded while ordering!
The only gripe that I have is the portion size was too light for me; and I'm not a big guy, but I still had room for more after finishing my dish.
Overall, definitely a good option for Italian cuisine.
Food was great, good flavors and portions, the service decent. The space itself was a little cramped but seating comfortable. The biggest negative was the wait..we had a reservation at 830 and didn’t get to our table until a little after 9, and we were one of several tables in the same situation. I would go back, but consider the carry out option.
If "Nonnina is influenced by our grandmothers", then the grandmothers would be embarrassed. Terrible overall experience. Waiting area and seating area were crowded. The restaurant did not honor the reservation time. The ravioli was hard at the edges. Dishes for a table of two were not served at the same time. The server and support staff demonstrated high energy but were short staffed. The noise level in the restaurant was very loud and prevented conversation. River North has a lot of options for Italian, and the other options should be considered before Nonnina.
We were entertaining out of town guests. They loved it - especially the butternut squash ravioli. I had the pasta special, and it was absolutely delightful! We had a show time to make and the wait staff was very attentive to this. So all-in-all a wonderful experience.
The ambience is welcoming and romantic. However, our server had no clue how to read visual cues. He kept on coming up to our table asking if we were ready to order, get another drink, order dessert, etc. every three minutes. Plus he never smiled. We ordered arancini (ordinary), baked clams (the clams were tough -- we could tell they were not fresh) and the chopped antipasto salad, which was delicious. The dessert, budino di cioccolao (dark chocolate mousse), was also very good. So, half good, half not very good. Not many people were in the restaurant for a Thursday night.
One of my favorite Chicago restaurants. The food is very good, ingredients are fresh. The service is outstanding! The servers are very attentive. (Leonardo) Many times I feel rushed when dining out. This is not the case here; it was a very relaxed atmosphere. I definitely recommend Nonnina's
The three of us had a lovely dinner. We ordered the meatballs & arancini which were delicious. Also the minestrone soup and the beat salad. For entrees we had the Dover Sole, the Chicken Vesuvio and the Pumpkin Ravioli. For dessert we had the terramisu. Everything was fabulous and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. Our waiter Roberto was wonderful! A great dining experience.
What a hidde gem! Everything was wonderful from the intimate atmosphere, the authentic Italian dishes, and the impeccable service. My husband really wanted linguine and clams and even though it wasn't actually listed on the menu, our awesome waiter Leonardo made it happen. We will definitely be back!
My husband and I had dinner here on Nov 24.17 and the food was delicious! I had the seafood pasta which had an incredible amount of seafood in it. My husband had the chicken parmigiana and it was also delicious. The only note I would make is that the chicken did not come with a side and so we ordered a side of pasta and that was $12. A little pricey for a side. But other than that the food was worth the prices paid and was really authentic. Service was also fabulous!
