Nonnina Ratings and Reviews
There is a reason why the chef (Tony) beat Bobby Flay! We dine here and at Piccolo Sogno (same owner other restaurant) a lot. But last Thursday the chef owner was on Beating Bobby Flay....and he did beat him! He made squash ravioli that looked so amazing we called when we watched the show the next day and had dinner there that night. I've had most of the menu but never the squash ravioli. It was incredible! I usually don't like pumpkin or squash ravioli because it has too many spices and taste like pumpkin pie - this does not. It was seriously one of those best bites ever. So delicate, perfect browned butter but not too much, served with walnuts, sage and I love the crumbled amaretto cookies on top was brilliant.
We also had the pork chop Milanese which was very good. We love their octopus, the minestrone is to die for, if they have the boar ragu (always at Piccolo Sogno, sometimes at Nonnina) it's a must get. I've had most of the menu and everything is outstanding. The boar ragu is better than what we had in Tuscany and we had it at several places in and around Sienna. Nonnina and Piccolo Sogno are favorite restaurants of our and they never disappoint. It's simply the best Italian food in Chicago. They have excellent reasonably priced wines by the glass. Also a plus, so you can start with a white then go to red. My husband and I don't like all of the same wines, so by the glass is best. I usually start with the Gavi D Gavi they have by the glass, then go to the Nero D'Avlo. My hubby goes earthier with their Sangiovese.
You can go here dressed up or a little more casual. It's right in the middle, as is the noise level. It's always packed and lively, but you can easily talk and here each other during dinner.
You simply have to try this place!
My only suggestion would be to make a dessert of one squash ravioli with a little scoop of vanilla gellato on top!
I took my wife and a friend out to dinner. To be fair, the food tasted very good and the service was outstanding. Towards the end of the meal my wife was beginning to feel ill. The manager assisted my wife and our friend into the lobby of the building (out of the restaurant). By the time we got home, all 3 of us were feeling ill.
While the service was great, the food tasted better going down than it did when it reversed course. Also, be careful, two of the dishes clearly had dairy in them although it was not listed on the menu. The Meatballs and the Sausage and Peppers. When the Sausage and Peppers were served, they had cheese on them, but it was not on the menu. We sent it back, but when we got to the bottom of the replaced dish, it was apparent that instead of making a new dish, they had simply scraped off the cheese on top...there was still cheese on the bottom and likely melted into the sauce.
Noninna's is becoming one of our favorites in Chicago. Excellent Italian cuisine. The ravioli de zucca was delicious, but VERY filling. After a very good Caesar salad split with my husband and 1-2 small pieces of bread, I could only eat a little more than half my entree. My husband had a special pasta entree with wild boar ragu which he loved.
Our appetizer (prosciutto) and our desserts were amazing, but my entree was just okay - I had the veal and i think it would have been better if it had been pounded super thin. My husband loved the pasta with the duck Ragu though. I really liked the ambiance as we were seated in a cozy booth for two at the bar because it was our anniversary. Two negatives- the noise level was high and there were only two stalls in the ladies room so there was actually a line.....
I have been here with friends twice and both times everyone loved the food.
Both times we had vegans in our group that were able to eat straight off the menu, no substitutions or omissions. The pastas are fabulous. I highly recommend the duck pappardelle,
good that night and the next day. The swordfish was perfectly cooked and the sauce was delicious. Both times we ordered assorted appetizers all were good.
We went to Nonnina after an afternoon matinee at the Cadillac Theater. I was concerned about bringing kids to such a nice restaurant, but everything was so amazing! They were accommodating for our kids--delicious homemade pasta and pizzas--and the adults all had amazing meals including appetizers (the cauliflower!) and big portion meals. I loved the Bracciole! My husband had a special boar pasta that was also delicious. Great wine, nice atmosphere, really attentive service, and delicious food. We would definitely return!
Service was subpar. We had reservations at 8pm and didn’t get seated until 840pm. Additionally, service was slow and a bit unprofessional. Food was not anything great and didn’t taste fresh. Pasta was not good for being an Italian restaurant. The chicken was the best part of the meal.
We absolutely LOVE Nonnina! We've been to Nonnina twice now and I think this is our current favorite restaurant in all of Chicago. And that's saying something! The food is fabulous. It's fresh, hot, and delicious. We've had the arancini, meatballs, antipasto salad (twice), timpano Noninna (you HAVE to experience this at least once), the veal chop (see photo), and the seafood risotto. All of it has been absolutely incredible! And the service is second to NONE! They are attentive. They are informative. They are everything you want in a service team. I just can't say enough how much we enjoy this place! We've been twice now before the theater but we'll come again just because we're downtown. If you're looking for a great place, with good prices (the drink specials are $12 which is awesome, considering it's Chicago!), you won't be disappointed with Noninna!
Our wait staff, although very helpful and friendly, were rushed and spent very little time at our table. They spoke quick and aggressive which made us feel rushed. The food was good but it wasn't anything to write home about. In a pinch, Nonnina, was nice but I can't say we'll be going back nor would I recommend it to anyone else. A solid B.
I went with a few friends for dinner on a Saturday night. I definitely recommend making a reservation as it was very crowded upon arrival - we even had to wait a few minutes for our table to be ready with a reservation.
The service was excellent; very friendly and attentive. The restaurant is fairly dark, but the small lights/candles at each table provide enough light to see the menus.
Between the three of us, we ordered the grilled octopus, bucantini carbonara, butternut squash ravioli, mafalde with mushrooms (must REALLY love mushroom flavor if you're going to order this), and tiramisu. Everything was EXCELLENT! I love that you can order an appetizer-size portion of the pasta. It was plenty filling!
The only reason why I gave it 3 stars for 'value' is because the menu is somewhat pricey for pasta. Although when you're in the city, what do you expect!
Great experience dining at Nonnina. The staff was very attentive and did everything they could to make this a great meal and all around experience. They made great recommendations after asking what we were looking for and what our preferences were. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Nonnina and can't wait to go back.
Four of us dined at Nonnina on a Friday night. We were seated right away. The menu is very nice with a reasonable separate specials list. Everyone enjoyed their choices. The service was very attentive. The restaurant is very nice inside. Just a great place to dine.
Only complaint was we were originally sat next to a 20 person table in an empty restaurant. Food and service were both phenomenal. When we asked to move, it was not an issue. They should have avoided sitting anyone near a large party in an empty restaurant. Loved the food!
Great find! Great ambiance, excellent food, great service. I will definitely return! Some of the best Italian food I’ve had in Chicago! The Cesar salad was fresh a with just the right amount of dressing. My pasta with veal ragu was balanced and expertly seasoned.
My husbands food was amazing. I ordered the veal Ragu and it was extremely salty and didn't taste like veal at all. The chocolate dessert was delicious and my husband's old fashioned was also very good. I would recommend it, but would try something other than the veal ragu. Our server was very attentive and nice and even though we had reservations for a later Saturday night we probably didn't need them. It was 9:30 when we arrived and many open tables.
Great atmosphere, servers and food. I had rigatoni vodka plate and it was delicious, could’ve been a bit bigger and more sauce but I enjoyed it. Valet prices go up after three hours which is disappointing. But overall I enjoyed my night here and would go back again.
Fabulous meal! Grilled octopus appetizer was wonderful and all of our main entrees were delicious!! My daughter never eats gelato, but thought your dark chocolate gelato was wonderful and the homemade biscotti was fabulous as well. Great gluten free options.
Would definitely come back!
