We made a reservation 3 weeks in advance and much to our surprise, we arrived only to find a sign on the door stating they were closed for the month of August! We were very disappointed as this was an anniversary dinner celebration!

It's very hot in the dining room because of the open kitchen. It was during the heat wave, so hopefully this is a fluke. Other than the heat, we really like the intimate dining room. The food was good and the wine ok, just not worth the cost per person. There are better tasting menus available in town. The tasting menu did allow for a fresh, seasonal, menu. In speaking with the chef, this was the intent of the menu to allow him to utilize the best ingredients that are available. The website is misleading as we didn't realize that the restaurant serves exclusively a tasting menu. The wine pairing was also strange as it is separately charged by course. This seems cheap - we would have preferred a clear price for the full menu with pairing. We would have also preferred a little more discussion about the wine, which was limited to just telling us the region. The pasta was fresh and excellent. We didn't have the veal or any of the other meat options.

A wonderful find in the U-Street corridor. Superb food and service. Very open kitchen concept where the chef can really see how his customers enjoy the meals. Homemade pastas are a standout, but all the food has been excellent on our visits. Highly recommended, even if sometimes parking can be problematic.

The staff was wonderful in accommodating us (and especially my vegetarian request) for our anniversary dinner. They went out of their way to make sure we didn't have to stress over what to order. We learned a lot about the different wines and how much love went into our food. It's not uptight or stuffy. Laidback and they want to make sure you enjoy your food!

The service and food was excellent. The only small complaint I have is, I was on a date and they say us next to a large loud table. I strongly recommend this place and I'll go there again.

The food was not bad. But there was so little of it that when it arrived, we laughed out loud. The first course of ravioli offered two very small pockets of pasta swimming on a giant empty plate. The main course of "scallops" was a misnomer - as they brought out the large, square plate, I was floored to see that there was literally just one tiny scallop at its center. My fellow diner ordered the salmon, which when measured totaled just over three square inches. Dessert was fine - small by most restaurants' standards, but it dwarfed the size of the food we received. At $55 for a "3-course meal," I would expect more than two small pieces of pasta and a single scallop. Perhaps I'm being unreasonable, but this was the worst value for money I have paid for in Washington, DC in ten years. The quality of food was fine, but frankly the audacity and greed of the chefs and restaurant managers is insulting, and I would never recommend this restaurant to a friend.

From the time we arrived until the moment we left we were impressed with all aspects of Nonna's Kitchen. Chef Will is a kitchen superstar. His staff works hard to please in every aspect of the dining experience from beginning to departure. This is truly great food without the attitude. Recommended without qualification.

I knew it would be a good time, when they called to confirm the reservations, asked about allergies, preferences, and asked my wife's name, as I had noted it was a wedding anniversary. nonna's is tiny- about 9 tables and 25 seats. Reservations are spread to seat people at different times, not turn tables. The kitchen is open, and when all 9 tables are full, and the kitchen is going, it gets louder, but early and late it is quiet. The wine list is daunting. The paired wines were outstanding. The food- well, I am still thinking about it.not sure what was my favorite, but I know in the weeks it will be a new menu...the entire package is what Makes Nonna's special.

Food was good and service was not bad but when spending $150 per person, expected more. Intimate only because it seats 24 but hardly romantic. The noise level made it impossible to carry on a conversation with my wife across the table. If you're looking for a place to dress up and celebrate a special occasion this is not it. No bar. Decided to do wine pairing and four courses. Took 30 minutes to get first course and, in turn, first sip of wine. If you're not in jeans you're overdressed. We are not ones to want to rush thru a dinner but drawing out the meal for over 2.5 hours got to be a bit much. Was so looking forward to treating my wife to a special birthday dinner. Both of us were sadly disappointed with the entire evening. Will not go back and cannot recommend.

How is this restaurant not on the top 100 list? We had the four course tasting menu, and everything was delicious. The service was outstanding, and the limited seating of the restaurant makes for a very personal experience with the chef and the waiter. I have been to a lot of restaurants in DC, and this was one of the top dining experiences I have had in the past 16 years. Excellent food, excellent service. I would highly recommend it.

We were hear for a wine tasting dinner with small plates prepared to accompany the wines. The food ranged from well prepared standard fare (buratta with heirloom tomatoes) to wildly inventive duck, light and fresh crab and a remarkable squash blossom stuffed with lamb ragu. Even the stem on that thing was delicious. There were also stunning little candied beets, cheeses, and a gorgeous Speck. When the wine threatened to overrule my senses I asked for some bread and was given a lovely focaccia with fresh rosemary. Although we seemed to eat and drink for hours, I left feeling satisfied, not overstuffed. We talked about the food all the way home.

Donna's Kitchen fulfills it promise to offer a unique, high-end, regional Italian food and wine experience on U St. A tasting menu that offers 2, 4 , or 6 courses, plus dessert, is ambitious, with several alternatives at each course. Dishes are also available a la carte. The chef is inventive, and his skills are evident throughout the meal. What's not to like about fresh fava beans woven into several dishes? Or wine pairings that offer very good regional Italian matches to the food? The dining room and kitchen are small, and great attention is paid to each dish. But there were a few wrinkles to a very good meal. A diner picks the specific dishes, and they are delivered in the order picked, not in a way that necessarily fits within the overall meal. We probably should have realized this was the approach, but assumed the chef/server would sort things out. As a result, one of us had a lamb chop with a very good robust red wine, followed by a scallop course with a light white pairing. The reverse order would have been preferred, but we were not asked. Service is generally very knowledgeable and attentive. The waiters know a lot about the food and wine. Take advantage of their expertise. But service was a bit rushed during the early part of the meal when the restaurant was not full, and there were inexplicable offers to remove unfinished plates several times during the meal. Desserts are limited in number, but appropriate to the overall meal. Surprisingly, the cheese course for dessert is served without bread for balance. The physical space is very attractive and comfortable, and diners have a view of the kitchen. Diners can also talk to each other without shouting, a unique experience in this neighborhood. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are in the neighborhood and looking to try some excellent regional Italian cooking for a special occasion. Hopefully the few wrinkles will reverse engineer and disappear with time.

We went to Nonna's Kitchen to celebrate my birthday, and selected the tasting menu of two dishes plus dessert. It was plenty for us: a lovely succulent soft-shell crab appetizer, and 2 lamb chops, plus cheesecake. Sauces and accompaniments were carefully chosen and enhanced the dishes memorably. We were very early (pre-theater) and it was an odd weekend, world leaders in town so traffic bad and people didn't come out until later. Going home around 10:00, though, we found the streets alive with laughing chatting sidewalk-cafe-sitting people of all ages and types. It was exhilarating! We plan to spend more time exploring the U St Corridor neighborhood.

The food was exceptional tasting but my dayboat "scallopS" entrée was actually ONE medium sized scallop! Unbelievable and hardly enough for an entrée! They should have been clearer on the menu that the dish featured only one scallop rather than scallop”S”, as it promised. The large lamb chop that my companion had was delicious and the rabbit ragu appetizer was simply sublime! Between the quality of the food and the excellent wine pairing, I hope to go back again, but leaving a restaurant hungry after paying a $200+ bill left a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended).

I really wanted to like this place more than I did, particularly for the amount of money we spent. The first problem was we were the only ones in the dining room for a majority of our meal and that was just, strange. Part of the dining experience is the atmosphere created by other diners. I want to note that the chef and everyone seemed to really try to make it a good dining experience. The pasta was nice and chewy, the way I like my noodles. I also enjoyed the lamb chop. One singular chop, but that was okay because I was very full. We filled up on the bread, so my dessert had to come home in one of those re-usable black containers. I could not eat anymore. Unfortunately, I was just not having a 5 star experience, and that was not because the staff wasn't trying, I just wasn't feeling it. We should have gone with the 2 course option, instead of the four courses. That was my intention, but seeing the empty room I just felt bad for the staff that we were the only ones there. So, we picked the four course plus dessert.

We were disappointed on several levels. First we were incorrectly informed that there was parking readily available on the street. 20 minutes to search and finally park in a garage 5 blocks away. Secondly the service was poor for such an intimate restaurant. We felt ignored and waited over 20 minutes before even getting water and menus. The rest of the meal was similarly paced. The kitchen seemed very disorganized (but beautifully intense). Alas, when the food did arrive both the appetizers and the mains were over salty. At this price point we expected much better food, at a minimum. We ordered a third entree, as the lone scallop on the plate was not enough for dinner.

Perhaps one of the most disappointing meals and evenings we have had in DC. Starting with a chef that thinks the customers are there for him and not the other way round, middling with the ridiculously expensive and pretentious food ($42 for one, yes one, scallop) and ending with desserts that should be arrested under trade descriptions legislation (cheesecake without cake or the described caramelised nuts, and last nights overlooked doughnuts), the place is to be avoided at all costs.

My wife and I celebrated Valentine's Day at Nonna's Kitchen, and it was fabulous. The ambiance is classic, warm and cozy--elegant without being overdone or trying too hard. The open kitchen made for an open and relaxed atmosphere; there was just enough noise so that you could speak comfortably without interrupting those at nearby tables. The food was phenomenal, every course prepared to perfect. There were generous servings, and the courses were paced so that we did not feel overwhelmed by an onslaught of food. My favorite course was the lamb ragu over polenta, while my wife enjoy the fresh donuts for dessert. Highly recommended!

Expensive, but for a special occasion (valentine's day), they made it great. There was a 5 course tasting menu which was killer & our waitress was very nice & attentive.

We visited Nonna's for Valentine's Day and I absolutely loved the place. A meal here isn't cheap, but I found the experience worthwhile, given the attentive service; cozy, comfortable interior; and most of all, excellent food and wine. It's a place that will impress your date while offering a laid back vibe that will immediately set you at ease. Will definitely return! I'm hoping next time to be able to check out their open kitchen as well.

One of my top restaurants in DC now. It's perfect for dates, families, or just a great meal. Very intimate, amazing staff, and mind blowing food. The wine list is exceptional (and affordable). Also, the chef prepared a popcorn flavored gelato that words do no justice. My companion and I had the gnocchi and papardelle and both were incredible. You absolutely MUST try this place.

I visit this place during the restaurant week with not much expectation since it is a new restaurant. However, the food and the service were great. The wait staffs were all very nice. Only issue I had was a wait time. Since the space is very limited, probably 10 tables, we had to wait for a while even though we made a reservation, maybe because it was the restaurant week. They provided a special dish for that, so we were very satisfied.

Donna's Kitchen offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the culinary delights of Italy, one region at a time. This time we indulged in Emilia-Romagna--fantastic Bolognese on home made tagliatelle, perfectly seared scallops on Chestnut Sauce, Lobster with Butternut Squash--everything was gorgeous, and more importantly, delicious. Goran, the Sommelier was an immaculate host, gave wonderful wine recommendations and further introduction to our selections. Donna's is a treasure. Worth every penny. I can't wait for Piedmont.
