Nonna's Italian Bistro

Nonna’s Italian Bistro serves up home-cooked Italian dishes and local favorites throughout the week. The wine dinner is a popular favorite, but many diners also prefer the standard dinner menu, which offers everything including starters, salads, soups and entrées.

The grilled salmon salad is particularly tasty, as is the pasta fagole and the arrabbiata, which is made with sausage, spinach and peppers. For lunch, enjoy a menu of sandwiches with themes drawn from traditional Italian-Chicago street food. The Italian beef sandwich is always a hit, but you might prefer the Italian combo with beef, sausage and peppers. There is a kids’ menu available, as well as a daily happy hour with discounted wines and snacks.

From Michael the server to the wine and food everything was excellent. This is a gem and I prefer to support local businesses. Give them a shot and you will certainly be back.

The ambiance was nice. The waitress was great. Seated quickly, etc.

The food was big let down. The bread and sauces were quite bland. The red sauces, marinara, and spaghetti sauce tasted bland and very much like it was canned, i.e., Ragu or something like that. The meatballs were decent, but under spices. The sausage was good.

It was clear from this dining experience that the problem is in the kitchen and in the recipes. Unfortunately, this is not an experience we will be returning to.

We have eaten here several times and always enjoy it. Whether we are there for drinks and appetizers or dinner. Great food, good service with kind servers.

We were a party of 8 (although 2 cancelled at the last minute). They set us up as requested in terms of the table configuration and put us in a larger “group event” room separate from the main dining room. It was great in terms of noise level but the room had an exterior door and was very cold. Additionally, it had zero ambiance; look like a storage room rather than a space for customers. Food was OK; not as good as we remember it being pre-COVID.

Service was fantastic - Mandi was thoughtful and very attentive.

We will go back but not with a large group - need to be in the main dining room.

I am 62, and a frequent restaurant reviewer, with the majority of my reviews 4-5 stars. This time, although patience and understanding in restaurants is a must as a result of COVID, some of what we experienced was inexcusable.

A first annoyance is that the Open Table reservation I had made didn't qualify for any points. NBD, but a bit frustrating.

Then my wife's Riesling was served in a champagne glass (never saw this before), which is NBD, but curious, given that it was early, and they shouldn't have been short on glasses. When asked, they said it was a sign of "celebration." A little weird.

Our order of the Arancini was excellent - light and very flavorful. They also served bread with marsala dipping sauce. I placed a slice of bread on my plate, spooned sauce on it, waited 15 seconds for it to cool, and then dug in. Unfortunately, the red sauce was so INCREDIBLY hot that I burned both my upper lip and the roof of my mouth. One could certainly say that's totally my fault, but honestly, that is the hottest sauce I have EVER been served.

My entree was Scallops Capellini, which is to be served on a bed of angel hair pasta, which I happen to LOVE. So I was disappointed when it arrived on linguine instead. It was still tasty, but I mentioned the issue to our server, who was apologetic (and a very good server overall). I would have rated the dish a 4-5 otherwise, since the scallops were perfectly done (although underseasoned), and the flavors were good. My wife's entree was the Brown Butter Cheese Ravioli, and it was not good. The "butter sauce" was extremely runny/watery and tasted fishy, and the ravioli was tough.

Nonna later came to our table and asked how everything was, and when my wife described the problems with her dish, Nonna argued every point, to the point of absurdity (no room to describe here). I mentioned it had been comped, and she became irate, yelled "comped!?," and left in a huge huff. It was extremely rude and unprofessional.

Again, great food, and warm and friendly service. Only three things slightly marred the visit:

1. If you're going to have "Chicago Pizza" on the menu, it needs to be more clear that we are talking about thin-crust square-cut tavern pizza, rather than deep dish pizza. (The pizza was tasty but not what was expected.)

2. Two of the wines we ordered were out. Everyone has supply chain issues, and it was early in the evening, but I was surprised our waiter didn't already have those 86ed when we asked for them.

3. The U-shaped booth we were in was a tad scrunched up for five adults. They would be fine for 3-4.

None of the above will keep us from coming back. The food was excellent and the service warm and attentive.

2nd time at Nonna's.1st time was excellent; it's what brought us back. This time; Aracini only 1 of 3 had any sausage. I ordered the Veal Piccata, I was served marsala scallopini. Took about 10 mins for the server to come back. Instead of having a new dish made (my companion was almost done) I stayed with the marsala. I ordered a bottle of white. It was served, but was put on the table and not in an ice bucket or cold water. The bill was corrected for thr incorrect order. We will come back for the tie breaker.

Have always enjoyed this place but our recent experience was terrible. There is no bartender and my husbands drink tasted like water. He sent it back and the next was better. The veal was equally bad and wasn’t worth eating. Service was adequate. Unfortunately it seems that things have deteriorated during this time of COVID

Nona's was a wonderful place, our visit on September 4th, 2021 was really lacking in food quality. The salad dressing was horrible, they did take it off the bill. The pizza was on the burnt side and I got some macaroons to take home, for a little treat, they were every hard. The waitress said the had new chefs. I realize there is a shortage in restaurant help, don't serve food that you would not eat yourself.

All 4 dinners were excellent. 3 of us had scallops & pasta. Scallops were grit-free and prepared properly. The pasta was angel hair in a nice, easy, cream sauce. Appetizers were bruschetta and mussels. Quite good. Oregon Pinot Noir. Nonna stopped by several times and made us feel right at home, When she found out we were celebrating a special occasion, she provided a gratis cannoli.

We used to go to the other Nonna's and definitely like this one better.

Had reservations. Friendly greeting when we arrived. Seated immediately in the area requested. Friendly attentive server during course of meal. Food was excellent. Had both the calamari and brussels sprout appetizers and four different entrees that were all excellent. Would recommend to family and friends. After four visits everything has been consistently excellent.

Nonna’s has always been so good. Our experience last night was very atypical of Nonna’s. The pizza was burnt and our chicken piccata tasted like chicken broth with no trace of lemon. Our server was very accommodating, but I think the kitchen staff is really struggling.

The food was delicious and staff very friendly. My only complaint is the "booth" for 2 people was too small and felt like it was squeezed against the wall in the bar. it was hard to get comfortable, and there was no room on the seat to safely place my purse. A bit larger space for a 2 top would really help the experience. We will be back but not seated in the same place.

A new find for us, when our usual go-to was booked for a group our size. I'm glad we went, because it was a good and pleasant meal.

Food: A good selection of Italian dishes, enough items that anyone can find something they want, even on multiple visits, but not so much that you're trapped by option paralysis. My pappardelle bolognese was pretty meaty and quite tasty. The arabiatta pasta, the pork belly ragu, and the lasagne bolognese were also winners. A good tiramisu at desert, too, though the whipped cream was unnecessary.

Drink: Nice wine menu, from moderate to major prices.

Service: Friendly and frequent. Everyone seemed empowered to help and respond. Our water might have gotten filled more frequently, but that's about all I can critique. Lots of smiles, lots of greetings and farewells.

Ambience: The room is elegant and modern -- not quite the homey bistro they try to invoke, but nicely classy. The noise level was quite high (even excluding our being in a booth backing toward the kitchen); folk speaking across the table had trouble hearing each other at times.

Value: Not inexpensive, but fitting the quality and service. A good special occasion location.

Nonna's didn't knock our socks off, and it hasn't leapt to the top as our favorite restaurant, but our first visit was quite positive, and we will definitely be back for more.
