Scape American Bistro
The Tavern Kitchen & Bar - CWE
Celebrated St. Louis chefs Ben Poremba and Tello Carreon create dishes that are rooted in the rich traditions of Mexican food, while also celebrating seasonal ingredients and contemporary techniques.
-The waiter did a great job explaining the menu as it was all specials with mexican/spanish
names and ingredients. Though the waiter did a good job, it was extremely frustrating to have
ALL menu items explained, especially for the 2 Ph.D.'s at the table.
-Booths were crowded. Seats too close to table. As people start wearing winter clothes, it is
going to get closer and be even more uncomfortable.
- The food was "different." It was not as described by the waiter.
-The presentation was poor as they did not fill the serving pieces, thus making portions appear
smaller than they were. Of a 8" diameter plate, only 4" inches were covered with food.
- Dessert selection were lacking and to be desired. As the menu was unique, it was expected the
desserts would be as well.
- Upon paying the check, small packages of chicklets were given ( 2 for a table of 4), and were
difficult to open (non-traditional, they needed to be squeezed).
-The light decor was great!!!
-I was grossly disappointed in the dining experience. I will NOT be recommending this place. It
has been NIXTA from the list of places to go eat.
Spent a few days in St. Louis recently with the grandkids. We arrived a day early for a date night. Had a great meal at Nixta. I am not generally a fan of Mexican food, though MC is.
Wow, we both really enjoyed it.
Started with the tlayuda. I honestly was not expecting much. We both loved it. Wonderful flavor (carrot coriander salsa, burrata, seeds and herbs on a flour tortilla. It was rather filling for a small plate (sigh, one of the sad things about aging is that one gets full too fast). Next was a flauta (local mushrooms, spinach, cheese, and a mushroom crema. I thought it was good, MC said excellent. Following was a order of lamb taco (two, very well filled, with a subtle flavor. We both rated this one as a close second, following the tlayuda. We wrapped up splitting a flan. Extremely light, which was just what we needed.
I enjoyed the mezcal based margarita, while MC strongly preferred the traditional (she made a sour face when tasting mine.
We generally prefer seafood, but wanted things outside our experience. Next time, we will probably try the crab tostada (but have the tlayuda again).
We had a terrific meal with friends on a bustling Saturday night. Enjoyed the many small plates that we ordered. Cocktails were killer. Very loud and expensive but stands up to the hype!
A victim of their own success. We had a reservation at 8P on a Saturday night. No table available so we were directed to the bar. The bartender told us he was so swamped by the dining room that he couldn't get us a drink. Then the hostess lost us and seated walk-ins with no reservations ahead of us leaving us standing at the bar with no drinks. Overall, they were just overwhelmed. The food isn't bad but it isn't over-the-top great either. Too loud to have a conversation. Give it some time. The potential is there. Let them figure it out.
We came to Mo. for the Eclipse and left with one of the most memorable evenings of the year! Nixta is fantastic! The empanadas were a huge hit and the octopus was ordered twice! (so were the margaritas! )
Fun vibe, great staff....can't wait to come back. Hopefully we'll be back before the next eclipse!
FANTASTIC! Presentation and food are top notch. Highly recommend.
AMAZING! Great service, impressive list of tequilas and Mexcals, and the food? Unbelievable. It was a pescaterian's dream with veggie and fish options a plenty. Yummy black bean hummus, Ceviches and aguachile were excellent and that octopus with potatoes and delicious mole was dynamite. We were nervous about bringing the kiddos so we booked early. Everybody was so great and didn't make us feel weird about it at all -- helped to book right at opening-- and we didn't even end up being the only table with kids. Can't wait to return!
No option for zero stars. We made an 8:00 reservation. When we arrived a few minutes early we were told they were way behind and there were 6-7 reservations ahead of us. When I inquired if we would be seated within an hour the hostess shrugged and handed me a menu. We decided not to stay. There was no apology or any concern whatsoever that a customer was leaving. I know they are busy due to recent accolades but that will pass. I will chose to dine with restaurants that appreciate their customers. I am very disappointed.
Innovative and delicious. Successfully introduces new dishes, flavors and combinations that will delight foodies but also be wholly satisfying to folks simply seeking a really good meal in a really attractive casual environment. It's Mexican and Mediterranean inspired, but it doesn't fit any preconceived notion of what that might be. Fun and lively in addition to being mighty tasty.
I was in town for work and read about Nixta online. The surrounding neighborhood looks a little dicey, but the restaurant is brightly colored and breezy with the garage door opened on the front. It was hard to decide what to order, since everything sounds wonderful. Looking at the neighboring tables didn't help either since literally everything looked delicious. This place would be great with a group of friends so that you could order the entire menu. I had a few tequila-based cocktails, all shaken up by an extremely cute bartender. Don't go and try to order bourbon, that isn't on their formulary.
Wife and I were stunned by the quality of the food. Of the four dishes we ordered, all of them were delicious, unique and beautifully presented. The prices were on the higher side of my comfort zone but you get what you pay for.
The drinks were good. I had a mezcal cocktail which was delicious and a michelada which was delicious (but very spicy! not for the faint of heart). They offered an off-the-menu no-booze cocktail for my pregnant wife.
We would come here again on a special occasion.
Very small setting gave it a neat atmosphere. Food was excellent. Dinner was quick without being rushed. If I had to nitpick, the drinks were a little pricey, but they were good quality and not outrageous.
The food was awesome! A lil pricey but worth it. Cocktails were great! Loved our server
Great food...the chef has done an incredible job with the menu! Only issue for me, I'm in a wheel chair and I had to ask people seated outside to stand up while they were dining so Icould get inside. It wasn't very comfortable for me to disrupt their meal...... oh! The marguritas were awesome!
Nixta is very good but be prepared to spend $s. The "small plate" concept can add up quickly. 3 people, $200, and no dessert or bottles of wine.
The food was absolutely spectacular, the server was wonderful. It is very unique menu.
Great cocktails!! Fun, inventive, tasty cuisine! Friendly and attentive service.
Awkward table (next to the bar) and so so service. Food was good but music was too loud. We could hardly hear one another.
You have got to eat here. Interesting dishes that will delight your palate. Everything we ordered was delicious and a complex layer of flavors that blended perfectly. You can tell the chef is passionate.
Rude and slow service upon arrival and at the bar, but wonderful experience with our waitress. Had to wait 30 minutes for our table to be ready. Bartender and hostess were extremely slow and gave us attitude when asked a question. Food was good, as expected.
Excellent ceviche, cocktails & everything else. Intend to dine here again the next time I'm in town.
Cool atmosphere. Food quality was excellent. A little pricey. Very very loud.
Food euphoria! An excellent combination of traditional Mexican cusine with a modern twist. Food is artfully presented and the tastes leave you wanting more yet at the same time strangely satisfied. The atmosphere is vibrant and the colors inspire your imagination. The service staff were as professional as they were personal. This is an experience worth every pretty penny spent.
Out with the wife. Food was very good. No complaints.
Casual atmosphere and quick service. Nice food presentation as well as delicious.
Great dining experience. Don't miss the margarita with Mezcal! Mole and the Duck are do not miss items! And how about the lamb tacos!
Delicious food. Authentic Mexican but updated. Fresh. Portion sizes perfect (enough to satisfy one not 3 on your plate). Prices totally reasonable. Friendly, knowable service. Make reservation or you may not get in. We will be back.
Simply the BEST. Nothing else left to be said!!!! This has become our favorite place!! Fresh! Fresh! Fresh!
Ceviche and octopus were great. Variety of interesting tasty margaritas. Colorful setting. Wonderful presentation. Tamales- really dry - the lady serving was really great and took them off the check. Pork belly and lamb tacos average. Hit and miss really, but would recommend to try.
Amazing food. Amazing service. Just don't sit by the front door. It slams shut(loudly) over and over and over.
With an aversion to Americanized Mexican food which is glopped with sour cream and guacamole and one who can't eat dairy, I approach mexican food cautiously.
Only the most unique, creative, wholesome, or authentic will pass muster with me!
NIXTA IS A GEM. with the outdoor patio closed since it was too hot, the inside was comfortably cooled, the menu a unique combination of surprising offerings mixed with unusual takes on traditional faire - the flavors and preparations do not disappoint. Delicious. Meticulously prepared. We will be back for sure.
Loooved the food!! Thank you chef Tello! Finally real good Mexican food in St Louis! You are the best ever!
Food was amazing. Beautiful presentation, delicious, well planned ingredients. Great flavors, unique menu. Was expecting it to be great and was not disappointed. Service was friendly and efficient. Wish it was a little less expensive just so I could eat there more often!
Service was very slow and inattentive. Additionally I asked a question about an item and received an eye roll. Seriously! Food was mediocre at best, too much deep fried for our tastes. Very disappointing.
Very creative and great tasting Mexican unlike most others.
Reservations are a must for this hot new spot. Food is a more upscale, Mexican tapas. Drinks were made well and a good value for the drink you got. Diverse selection of rums and the margarita was great. We were expecting a little more from the food because of the hype from others, but can only say it was 'okay'.. was a little pricey for what you got served. But try the handmade empanadas. These were our favorite from the evening.
Absolutely loved it. Immediately following my first visit, I made reservations for my bday dinner.
I've never had a bad meal or experience here. Best new restaurant in StL. Brought a group of people here last night who had never come before and they all raved about it the whole time we were there. Keep doing what you're doing - it's excellent.
Nixta is delicious food, presented beautifully. Everything we tried had the feel of being lovingly prepared and was certainly enjoyed in the same spirit. We had an appetizer, two small plates and an entree. All were really outstanding and seasoned to perfection. Most of the dishes had some degree of spiciness, but in a way that simply added another layer of flavor, rather than covering up for a lack of it. The cocktails were on point as well and they have a well-rounded offering of top shelf options. I'll definitely be back!
