What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.7

Nix is a grown-up, entirely vegetarian and vegan establishment, in an area near Union Square previously lacking in both such kinds of places.

Ratings 7.5-8.0:These are restaurants that are reliable, tasty, and particularly good for whatever we have deemed them “Perfect For.” Hit up a 7.7 for Date Night with confidence, as long as you don’t need the restaurant to be the most interesting thing that happens that night.

Uneven is the best way to describe nix, where ive eaten many times. Some things are superb, others are just not great. For this reservation, i love the food we chose and the first waitress (who helped candidly with food selection). The manager was nearly rude in not helping us with our shaky table and the second waitress (who took over the shift of the first waitress) had no clue what we had ordered and what had been served. I like nix for a neighborhood joint and they do wonders with vegetables. I do wish their service would come up to the standard of their food, or their prices would reflect the uneven service.

We were a party of three, looking to share some dishes and try some new tastes. Our server was very helpful in suggesting menu choices and portion sizes. The food came with a wonderful array of flavors and seasonings. Nix is a vegetarian restaurant a non-vegetarian can enjoy, and for the vegan and vegetarian customers, it offers a rich feast.

Spectacular restaurant with a variety of great quality dishes. Perfect for sharing groups since plate portions are relatively small. $$$ overall an expensive dinner but highly worth it since food, staff and venue was incredible.

A lovely room with helpful staff who gave great advice on how to order. We shared about 10 plates and a bottle of wine for four of us. It was just perfect as were all starving from a busy day. We left feeling very satisfied. The food is imaginative and beautifully presented.

I said on opentable it was for a birthday. In multiple locations. The restaurant did not acknowledge it. Other people had candles on their deserts.

Disappointing

And the food was fine, but nothing very inspired for the price.

Service & ambiance was good and as expected at this tier of restaurants, but the food we tried was lacking. Had the Bellini Royale and Playa II for drinks. Both were ok. Definitely not bad, but nothing matching the type of restaurant. The Playa II was more agreeable than the Bellini Royale. For food we had the bamboo rice and the shakshuka. The bamboo rice was a nice adventure and the better dish. The shakshuka was interesting as it was my first try at one, but I cannot recommend it after trying the one at Zizi Limona. I can recommend abcV as an alternative to this restaurant judging from those two dishes and the drinks.

The dishes are creative and very flavorful. It isn’t necessary to claim that the intent is to share any more than any appetizer might be. We shared a medium dish and selected our own entries. The wine menu is comprehensive. The servers were attentive and professional.

Biz is one of my family’s favorite restaurants. My daughter is vegan so this is a celebration place. This time, everything fell flat. The biggest miss was the cauliflower. They switched the dish and removed the bbq sauce. I get that things will evolve but that evolution is not as interesting to us.

It's hard to top my 1st visit in December to celebrate my partner's birthday, but other than knowing how good it was last time, my expectations were set a bit lower for several reasons. One it's happened in many other restaurants, its great and you go back at a later date and it's never quite the same. Certainly that is not always the case, as it was not here.
Nix did not disappoint in any way. 2 of my 4 friends ( party of 5) are very fussy. One thinks vegan is so unimaginable she acts as if she is being forced to eat in a 3rd world country. The other likes vegetarian food but is notorious for sending her food back, often more than once. Get the picture?
Guess what? They loved the place, the food. No food was returned and the birthday dinner went without a hitch.
Our server ( wish I could remember her name) was very helpful as she was charming. She made the experience even better.
One dish was better than the next, and for me the big surprise food wise was a cooked cherry tomato special that barely looked like it had sauce. What a great surprise. The flavor was so delicious that if I was a castaway, I would want it on my island. Hopefully it will go on their permanent menu!
Our choices were from both menus ( vegan & vegetarian) and honestly it was as good as the 1st time. Everything from the lighting, candlelight, ambience makes it very easy to dine in.
The staff in general are always smiling and helpful. ( that's not always common)
3 out of the 5 of us were 1st timers and all 3 said they would come back.
Need I say more?
OK I will. The chocolate tart was delicious for a birthday treat along with a sparkler. Don't wait till its your birthday though. Good for all occasions. LOL
There is nothing negative I can say other than if you have a large appetite expect the bill to reflect that.
Oh one more thing. the cocktails are as wonderful as they are delicious. That includes the non alcoholic ones as well.
Looking forward to returning very soon.

We arrived ten min early to our reservation to try out a drink at the bar.

Michael the bartender was a godsend and helped the service rating. Very knowledgeable mixologist who made some fun a creative drinks for our group.

We were seated at our table 48 min after our reservation time. I was told 3 times that the table was paying over the 48 min.

Unisex restroom were very dirty, toilet rolls on floor on broken rod holder, trash can overflowing, trash on floors

Waitress never gave her name, it would take 15 min every time we asked for water refill, we had a hard time getting her to stay focused and take a drink order as most of the meal someone always had an empty drink, good thing Michael was at the bar across from us and we could just ask. She would stop by the table to inform of us something and walk away while we were trying to ask questions or order something.

Manager was Helpful for drink, came back with option for vodka, did Comp us a round of drinks at the bar for our 48 min wait time.

Food
Cucumber dip amazing
Jamaica good and spicy
Cauliflower build a bun amazing
Spicy tofu delicious
Gnicooi amazing
Avacado - light refreshing with nuts
Mushroom good but inside pocket of dough a little undercooked

We had a very good meal at Nix. The room is noisy and as it got later in the evening at times it was hard to hear people at your own table.

All the dishes we had were delicious however a few in the larger plate portion of the menu were not so large . The tofu pockets while very tasty should have been in the small plates section and priced accordingly.

Go. Book ahead. Fight for a table. It was epic. This is great veg food without the artifice of vegetarianism. We had pepper dip , tandoori bread, pea dumplings and lots more. Cauliflower tempura was a triumph and we will go back for that alone. We loved it.

We dined here for my vegetarian son's birthday. The staff was lovely, including the host and our server. The atmosphere is nice but casual. I will say that the food was very good. Even my husband who wasn't planning on enjoying much liked it. Nothing on the menu seems very expensive but let me tell you, it really added up! We did order many dishes but each one was very small. They resembled appetizer sized portions, even the ones that stated that they were "bolder," as opposed to "lighter." The food was excellent quality, prepared very nicely and I really appreciated what they are doing there.

The place is dark, in some table like the our too dark. Level of noise is high and they do not have anything in place for a better acoustic. We found some dish a little ordinary like the spicy tofu with brown rice, another one was just a salad. Avocado with truffle was very good. Cocktails and wine were both great.

Nix has a great upscale ambiance and service (5 stars). Everyone was very polite and courteous. Cocktails were good but didn't across anything outstanding.
