About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Fancy
  • Great for fine wines
Located in San Francisco’s Design District, Niku Steakhouse is a meat-focused restaurant, highlighting an in-house dry aging program, exclusive cuts of coveted Japanese A5 wagyu with an emphasis on wood fired cooking.

Niku, by the Omakase Restaurant Group, hosts a dining room oriented around a roaring custom binchotan charcoal and wood-fired grill, where guests watch as Executive Chef Dustin Falcon (Lazy Bear, The French Laundry) and his team prepare steaks to perfection. At Niku, there is a true marriage of American and Japanese sensibilities. Falcon’s cooking is driven by the terroir of Northern California — which finds its way onto the menu through foraged ingredients and products from local farmers — met with the highest quality domestic and A5 Japanese Beef.

From the OpenTable editors: Packed since it opened its gilded door in 2019, this swanky steakhouse is the spot for prime Japanese and American Wagyu, dry-aged at the next-door butchery. Grab a seat at the 18-seat chef’s counter to watch Dustin Falcon (of Lazy Bear and French Laundry fame) throw down the tomahawk steaks and crispy pig ears that helped the one-of-a-kind restaurant earn one MICHELIN Star.

We got the Australian Wagyu tomahawk, 4 cocktails, beef tartare, crispy potatoes, house made rolls, ice cream and enjoyed house curated tasting samples free of charge which were amazing. Everything was delicious and unforgettable. The service was spectacular, efficient, polite and very knowledgeable about all the menu items. They offer wonderful recommendations for any palate and helped us choose a wonderful set of courses we thoroughly enjoyed. Favorite restaurant I’ve been to so far, with a beautiful ambiance and environment. We will definitely be revisiting soon.

Had an amazing birthday dinner here! The server was extremely knowledgeable, attentive, and had a great attitude. The steaks and the bone marrow starter were well worth the price!

The food served was tasty but my steak was overcooked. I ordered medium rare and got medium well. The server never came to ask how was it. Had to flag him down to get the steak I ordered which did come quickly. The experience and restaurant decor is more at what you would find in any hotel and not a Michelin starred restaurant. It’s sad because when I ate at their prior location the experience was vastly superior.

For such a hugely expensive meal just expected an equally valuable experience. I feel like my $275 steak wasn't quite as good as the $45 cut I get from my grocery butcher. Also not cooked as requested and I rarely (no pun intended) return a steak to cook longer. The service was average. Our server seemed bored. The manager who checked on us was great tho. He was attentive.

The new location definitely more crowded. And the food did not disappoint. However, our waitress kind gave a very snooty feel. We asked for a fork for the dessert n she replied it’s a finger food !! Really?! I prefer the original location n the service definitely way better.

We picked Niku to celebrate our elopement and it was the perfect choice. We don’t fine dine often and Niku did not disappoint. My husband has some dietary restrictions and Niku was more than happy to accommodate to them. The staff were lovely and friendly, the food was absolutely delicious, and we left feeling happy we spent our first dinner as a married couple in such a great place.
