About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Fancy
  • Great for fine wines
Located in San Francisco’s Design District, Niku Steakhouse is a meat-focused restaurant, highlighting an in-house dry aging program, exclusive cuts of coveted Japanese A5 wagyu with an emphasis on wood fired cooking.

Niku, by the Omakase Restaurant Group, hosts a dining room oriented around a roaring custom binchotan charcoal and wood-fired grill, where guests watch as Executive Chef Dustin Falcon (Lazy Bear, The French Laundry) and his team prepare steaks to perfection. At Niku, there is a true marriage of American and Japanese sensibilities. Falcon’s cooking is driven by the terroir of Northern California — which finds its way onto the menu through foraged ingredients and products from local farmers — met with the highest quality domestic and A5 Japanese Beef.

From the OpenTable editors: Packed since it opened its gilded door in 2019, this swanky steakhouse is the spot for prime Japanese and American Wagyu, dry-aged at the next-door butchery. Grab a seat at the 18-seat chef’s counter to watch Dustin Falcon (of Lazy Bear and French Laundry fame) throw down the tomahawk steaks and crispy pig ears that helped the one-of-a-kind restaurant earn one MICHELIN Star.

We picked Niku to celebrate our elopement and it was the perfect choice. We don’t fine dine often and Niku did not disappoint. My husband has some dietary restrictions and Niku was more than happy to accommodate to them. The staff were lovely and friendly, the food was absolutely delicious, and we left feeling happy we spent our first dinner as a married couple in such a great place.

Temporary location doesn’t feel worth the price and unf not all the food matched the price either. We loved the amuse and starters, potatos were great, but the tomahawk didn’t have as much flavor as we’d hoped.

First time at Niku and it did not disappoint! Service was amazing and food was so good. We got the tomahawk, broccolini, and crispy potatoes. My fav was the broccolini and my bf’s fav was the tomahawk.

The food quality is very good. The improvement in quality over, for example, a Brazilian steakhouse, isn't sufficient to justify the ~5x increase in price though.

The best steak I’ve ever had (wagyu tasting experience). Great customer service. Good drinks. A little loud. Pricey.

Waitstaff was good. Ambiance was not bad, during 7pm it gets pretty loud and energetic (also had a crying baby nearby). Sides were excellent. Ordered the Ribeye and Filet. Ribeye was a bit on the chewy side so was a little bit disappointed. Overall everything was good.

We were celebrating a friend's birthday. We ordered a filet mignon and a ribeye. Both were prepared perfectly. The meat was tender and juicy. They offered three desserts and I only planned on ordering two. After the server described all three desserts, I couldn't decide which two I wanted. They were nice to give us all three desserts, comping one.

Niku was very enjoyable in their temporary location. My boyfriend is neurodivergent and sensitive to sound. They accommodated it so perfectly we were able to have our first dinner without any triggers. This made it the most memorable occasion for us. We are so grateful to them for making the accommodation effortless for us. We absolutely loved the staff and location. There are fire pits outside that are cozy after dinner. The tables are nicely spaced out. If you want to experience Niku with a little more privacy/space I would visit them now. The quality of the food is excellent as always. They made my “steak doesn’t agree with me” boyfriend into an absolute steak lover. I just wish Chef Dustin sold his cookies here 🥺 maybe one day. Thank you Niku for making our anniversary our best date yet.

Stopped in at the temp location of Niku at The Third Floor inside The Jay Hotel. As usual, the food was phenomenal. Exact same menu as their usual location, and prepared the same. Our waitress Megan was very attentive and provided great service. The ambiance of The Third Floor is much louder and a less intimate setting, but that's outside of their control. Can't wait to get back to Niku when their regular location reopens.
