The food was not exceptional at such a high price. Total bill was over $540 for 2 of us including a wine pairing and some extra drinks. The quail and mushroom dumpling were the standouts. The other dishes are already forgotten.

Staff was very concerned because the table before us was running a little late and therefore our dinner was also running late. So they gave us some free drinks and a free nibble and kept us informed. We were cooperative and understanding. And the bar was really fun with great drinks. Moving onto the menu and food.....meh....it was good but not great. Some dishes were bland. The waiters were well behaved albeit robotic and pretentious. Not sure I’ll go back with all of the other choices in SF

Nightbird remains our favorite restaurant in SF. Chef Alter’s food is always beautiful as she brings out the best in her seasonal ingredients and menus. The staff is welcoming and warm and the setting lovely. Every visit to Nightbird is special.

Excellent creative seasonal menu. Fine attention to detail in presentation and service. The perfect blend of high technique and approachable food. Ref and duck dishes were perfect. Mushroom dumplings were delicious. Desserts were light and flavorful.

Elegantly spare interior, interesting crockery, very attentive service. The food was varied, creative, beautifully arranged and delicious. My gluten intolerance was no problem at all. I got the complete experience despite that hurdle.

Wow, first off I thought I was using my credit card just to secure a reservation only to discover that I would be charged $250 if I canceled. Then each part of the meal was had at least one element that was just nasty. Poorly seared duck that was too tough to cut, same with the beef. Foi Gras truffles that was greasy and cold. Neither my dinner guest nor I were able to finish any of the tastings and this wasn’t because the portions were large. Overall, a huge disappointment. The wine pairings were meh. In comparison to Acquarello which is a solid 10 this place was a 2. And the two was because the cocktails were quite good......

A lovely experience in every way.
I’m jaded- have travelled the world and really prefer just good food, no matter the venue. A place that has such original food (delicious AND photo-worthy) and very attentive service in a jewel-box setting so close to cultural events (I go to ballet at the opera house, lectures at Sydney Goldstein, and various events at Davies Hall) for such a good price point was just wonderful. Their small, atmospheric bar is the perfect place to enter if you are 10-15 minutes early. We appreciated knowing where our table would be (we had a 5:30 reservation so there was a choice of a few spots). Decor was sophisticated and understated. Their Rose Champagne by the glass was lovely.
I might have chosen the “pescatarian” version of the menu. Food-wise I’m not a strict “anything” (but prefer seafood to most animal selections) but was not sure that selection could be made for an individual or for the group. Thank you, Nightbird!!

We had great dinner there. Super casual feel but professional service. Food was a bit salty on my palete. Innovative food and menu. Only downside was cocktails were weak with flavor and wine paring was boring.

Excellent food experience. Lots of little treats that aren't written on the menu so surprises around every corner. Every dish was a good portion that gave more than just a "taste", enough to make you feel satisfied. Pacing was great. Will definitely be back to try other parts of the menu as it changes through the year.

NIghtbird was quite frankly a rip off. The food was just okay, they rushed us to finish cocktails before the meal even started, and we were constantly disappointed with the quality of food. Scallops were fishy (not in a good way), the squab was chewy, and the beef dish was similarly tough. When you spend almost $500 on a dinner for two, you expect to be wowed and excited afterwards...not the case with Nightbird. I will not be returning.

Service was knowledgable, friendly and humble. Environment was welcoming, tasteful and engaging. The price was very reasonable. Could not have asked for a better experience.... thank you

Loved everything about Nightbird! We took friends as a "thank you" and celebration & everyone was floating on air when we left! The food is exquisite, creative, intriguing and delicious. The ambiance is lovely and heightened by the Linden Bar. Service impeccable, wine pairings outstanding. Lot of wonderful added touches: dishes all made by local artists (pottery/ iron work), insanely yummy fresh sourdough, an assortment of goodies after dessert - handmade rose lollipops, lavender camels and a little "muffin for breakfast in the morning" - that muffin was HEAVEN! After all of this, the best part was meeting the gorgeous Chef/ Owner Kim. She is a complete delight, charming, down-to-earth with great energy and so easy to connect with - it felt like we were chatting with an old friend! Definitely RECOMMEND!!! (Just don't make it impossible for me to get a reservation next time!!). PS - I believe you MUST have a reservation as every individual meal is planned in advance.

Amazing experience. The food is artfully and beautifully presented and the taste was exquisite. We drove all the way up from the Peninsula to celebrate my friend’s 40th birthday. The set menu was delicious - seafood, meat, vegetables and amazing home made bread!! I can’t recommend it more - especially because Kat the owner included so many personal touches throughout - including an owl engraved on the knives! We’ll definitely be going back!

For an expensive night out, this was probably the worst experience we've had. The food was good, the ambiance was cozy and the staff was helpful, if cold but all was well until we were asked to leave because the next seating was waiting for their table. This was after I asked for a cup of coffee but was told I couldn't have any because the next party was waiting. I would've been fine with that but what followed next was beyond belief...the manager of this fine dining establishment came over and asked us to vacate the table because we were late to our seating and they couldn't let us stay longer (we were late by less than 10 minutes I may mention). We stood up immediately but made it clear that this was unacceptable at a place that talks of community and hospitality and has a 1000 dollar price tag to boot for 4 people's dinner and drinks. I can not help but think that the color of our skin (we're all South Asian) had something to do with the treatment meted to us and needless to say, we will not be coming back.

Fun. We were welcomed by a complementary glass of sparkling wine to celebrate my daughter and her wife’s 15 year anniversary. Plus a cute Happy Anniversay Card welcomed us. The food was entertaining starting with a tiny quail egg and ending with a dramatic and delicious dessert. The many courses varied in quality but they were presented with a flourish and a theatrical sense. Some tiny on tiny plates, others Tiny on big plates but mostly delicious. $30 price difference between vegetarian and meat courses was puzzling as meat courses were tiny. Overall entertaining and fun experience.

Ever changing with the seasons, ever reliable in quality. We always love a visit to Nightbird. It is a top tier tasting menu without the "oh gawd, what have I done to myself" excess of somewhere like French Laundry. Made with creative flair and a love of the ingredients, served with good humor and no stuffy pretense, every plate is a delight. Come a little early and have a cocktail in their tiny gem of a bar, the Linden Room, if you can. Highly, highly recommended.
