Better food than last time, a year ago. Good value. Service good minus a too-long period after we finished the main 20minutes was longer than ideal. We will return. Booths a little better than table we had, which was near an exit door.
My family and I have loved this place since our first meal. We just went for Valentine's and something was off. The service and some of the food we ordered wasn't as good as usual.
The restaurant is good for a special occasion. The portions are generous , served in a nice manner. Everything tastes good. The price is somewhat higher than you would expect from a local place. Overall - good
The location/vibe is excellent. The staff/servers were friendly and attentive. The food was a great disappointment. We all ordered different plates and nobody was happy with anything. Even the desert was subpar... how do you make a bad cheesecake? My wife thought her scallops had been frozen for a long time, and they sat on but a dollop of risotto... at around $30 it was a total rip-off. My chicken was hard and dry and the wine sauce just weird. I awoke in the middle not the night with a terrible stomach ache. The salad was like spring mix tossed on a plate... nothing special about it at all. Then the bill came... and for four people (only one person had a drink that wasn't called tap water) the tab was over $220. Which for what we had, hurt.
True the 49 ers we’re playing on the bar TV and everyone was preoccupied except our table. Twice we had to get up and seek out the friendly waitstaff. We all had burgers and fries, and they were great. We sat next to the bathroom and the smell of sanitizer wasn’t too bad, but the place looked shabby. That said I would go back for a burger but not expect much in terms of atmosphere or service.
The server gave great service, the food was good but the restaurant needed a good cleaning; this made us hurry up and finish our meal.
Had no idea Nico's was even in Berkeley! The food was consistently good - crispy brussels sprouts in a not-overpowering garlic/balsamic glaze, freshly made rolls, delicious and large Caesar salad, tasty seared scallops with a pea risotto, New York steak perfectly cooked and delicious. We were surprised but happy. However, the prices are not low, by any means.
Service started out quite good and then the server didn't come by for a long time, and forgot to ask us if we wanted dessert. Only a few choices were available and none were appealing, so we didn't, but would definitely be inclined to come again.
The restaurant isn't beautiful, but it is comfortable enough (although we were chilly inside the night we were there). Try it out!
The wait staff could not have been nicer nor better in any respect. The restaurant had no detectable central heat and the two space heaters were entirely inadequate. The pea and saffron risotto had great flavor but was served luke warm and even reheated was still luke warm. The ambiance (except for the temperature) was lovely and the food is deserving of a second chance. Here’s to a “better next time “ possibility.
Waitress was super lovely as well as the neighborhood. Sort of underwhelmed by the quality of food, Especially given the prices.
Five us shared the ahi tuna appetiser, and we all but fought over the last pieces. It was that good. Three of us ate steak with two side dishes of our choice....squash and asparagus. The steak was cooked to perfection (as were the sides) and very large. One member of our group took the leftovers home.
The other two members had scallops and lamb, and they finished everything.
Our one regret: we had no room for dessert.
Kind of low key the Friday we were in. Wait staff was more than attentive. I recommend their old fashioned, if you like cocktails.
We went for lunch. Place was not very full but the food was great and the drinks were fun. Nice place.
Good food. Great location and reasonable parking. The bar looks like a fun hang out.
Nice find. Friendly little neighborhood spot. Great quality food, smart professional service and a nice vibe. Great happy hour deals. Will be back.
Four of us came in on Wednesday night. We ordered two ahi tuna appetizers....utterly yummy and HUGE. Then two of us had the scallops, and two of us had the 16 ounce steak with squash and asparagus. Again, everything was perfect, and the portions were generous. For dessert, four of us split a crepe....and didn’t leave a crumb.
We might add that we came in before six (during happy hour), and the bartender said he would charge us happy hour prices even though our drinks might arrive after six.
One sad note....many drinkers but not enough diners. We’ll tell our friends, but more people need to come and eat. The food is terrific.
Service was very poor.
Steak was tough not prime as described in the menu.
Appetizer came after the main course (they refused to "comp" it.)
Had to ask for water many times.
There are many good restaurants in Berkeley.
Nico's is not one of them!
The quality and taste of the food was excellent and wonderful atmosphere. Our server was friendly and great. My only negative was that the staging was completely off. We started with an octopus appetizer. This was followed by a salad that was delivered before we were finished with our apetizer. And then the main course was delivered before we were even half-finshed with our salad. I told them we weren't ready and they took the main courses away. But, I was barely finsished with my salad before they wisked the plates away to bring the main course. It was a shame because otherwise it was a very nice meal.
Great food and very pleasant service.
Happy hour menu between 3 and 6 is a great value. Can make a nice meal for late lunch or dinner for a reasonable price. Service is excellent. Happy to have Nico’s is the neighborhood.
Great restaurant, delicious food and consistent. Been there a few times and service and good quality always great.
Perfectly situated in a cove on Walnut street. Open Table helped us to find this quaint establishment; THANKS!!!
I have eaten at Nico's when I lived in Berkeley 15-20 times. It's a real gem. Wine priced reasonable and so is food. Service is fast and neighborhoodly. When you are ready to give 4th Street a rest, Uber over to Nico's for a fresh prospective in Berkeley.
Only down side is the seat cushions need replacing so bring a pillow. ;-)
Over priced. We were the only folks having lunch and service was terrible.
Good food, large quantity but not so tasty.
Table was not so clean
wine bottle was served incorrectly not removing the capsule on top and not letting anyone testing it before serving
I love this neighborhood place. The happy hours treats are delicious and the presentation is lovely. I am fond of the Seared Ahi Tuna while my husband loves the sliders and fries. Thanks for the great food.
Good food. Really liked the burrata appetizer and the pea/saffron risotto side.
Not fancy decor but enjoyed the meal.
It was a mixed experience for us.
The place was largely empty but on a Tuesday night, we weren't expecting a full house either.
There was a point when we were confused about the music playing since there seemed to be two things playing at once. Turned out that we weren't wrong, and the kitchen staff had been playing their music so loud that it was going head-to-head with the ambiance music in the restaurant.
The food was pretty decent. The bread came after half an hour and only after we asked about it. We ordered the pork chop and the crab-stuffed salmon which were both delicious (though the latter came with overcooked, dry potatoes, and asparagus that hadn't had the hard parts of the stems cut off). The pea saffron risotto and the Mac and cheese on the other hand were scrumptious. Overall, it was a fair experience but for the price, we were expecting better food, ambiance and service.
Lovely late Sunday brunch at Nico's ! Really nice menu, Food was excellent, and the Service was outstanding. Will definitely be coming here often and recommending it everywhere. Thank you!
We went to Nico's during their brunch menu hours on a Sunday. I am on a special diet (Keto) and asked in advance if I can order from the regular menu, which the staff kindly said "yes" to. The food and service were fantastic. I'd definitely patronize this establishment again.
Great food. Quiet and nice for conversation, unlike so many restaurants now. Good ambiance. Recommended.
Lovely outdoor seating area, great food, loved sweet chili shrimp!
I LOVE Nico's and go there often, mostly for their fabulous mussels and fried brussels sprouts. Very friendly and welcoming all the time. Last time the weather was so warm my friend and I could eat dinner outside and that was lovely. Inside is also lovely.
Food was great, but we had a half hour delay between first and main course. To your credit, we were comped a second glass of wine . We will be back.
The restaurant has changed quite a bit since it was rebranded. The servers were really nice, but the food was very delayed and the chicken dish, when it came, was raw in the center. They very promptly and apologetically replaced it, but it kind of ruined the experience (my friend is a bit paranoid about germs from raw meat, so it was just hard for them to enjoy the meal after that). The food was okay, but not amazing. In the Bay, and especially in North Berkeley, where there are so many great and affordable options, it's just not really worth while.
Service was fantastic. The food was delicious and great value for your money. Kid-friendly. Steak and pork chop were delectable. All the sides are equally good. Will definitely be back!
I loved the mussels and the Brussels sprouts. The waiter was very kind.
Great place, good service, good food!
Average food and a little disorganized. When we arrived for a 1:30 pm reservation on a Sunday only about four or five of the tables were occupied; there were another four or five that were empty. The person who greeted us was very pleasant but he had to call the bartender over to handle our seating. Even though half the restaurant was empty, the bartender told us to wait in the bar because "we are slammed right now." About 5 - 10 minutes later we were seated at a table, which was one of the ones that were unoccupied when we arrived. The server was a pleasant young woman who, when asked what was good on the menu, said, "Everything," but in answer to questions about menu items said it was her first day working there, so she had not seen or tasted many of the menu items. The food took about 15-20 minutes to arrive. The chocolate chip pancakes were good, but the other items were unremarkable. In all, the ambiance was low key, the people who worked there were pleasant, but the place felt disorganized, the service was slow, and the food was average. Probably an OK place if you want a leisurely breakfast.
It was just OK. The place is frequently empty, which may just be a reflection of how underwhelming it is. We were there at 1pm on a Friday, and were the only table in the restaurant. Probably won't be back. Bar looks nice tho' with some regulars, and a game on.
We had a very large party of 16. It was hard for them to set us up, so they arranged for outdoor seating . It was not the warmest night, but the food and service was quite good!
