The newest creation from the owners of the beloved Villa Azteca in Downtown Salinas (Salinas City Center), the eatery honoring the Alvarez family patriarch will open Summer 2023 in Carmel Plaza. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant will have indoor dining, bar seating and a small outdoor space, serving specialty Michoacán dishes as well as other Mexican favorites, incorporating three generations of family recipes.

We had eaten at Nicola’s the last time we visited Carmel and liked it, so we decided to go again this trip. We waited a while for our waiter, but were given water and menus, so we were okay with that. We ordered chips & guacamole, along with margaritas. When they arrived, we told the waiter we were going to chill for a bit before we ordered. Our waiter never returned to take our order. Someone finally came by to remove our empty guacamole bowl and we told her we just wanted our bill. We paid it and left very disappointed.

Excellent food but the least friendly wait staff I’ve ever encountered in a fine dining establishment. The waiter didn’t ask how we were or if we had questions and NEVER checked back with us.

The crab stuffed chile relleno was delicious with ample chunks of fresh crab and a lovely creamy sauce with pumpkin seeds. My dessert was the cornmeal square with fruit and pinon ice cream, a lovely finish to an excellent meal.

Disappointed. Over priced and uninspired menu. Fajitas served tepid (I think they were held for the other entree). Server couldn’t explain the basics of what was in each dish and was insensitive to my no-cilantro request. The lobster taco appetizer and the fresh lemonade were the only good part of our meal. The corn ice cream was tasteless and our attempt to engage the waiter to understand what we were supposed to discover in the dish was a fruitless endeavor. If you are paying for a fine dining experience you would expect the waiter to be knowledgeable and provide some insight into the menu.

I felt it was severely overpriced. $34 for chips, salsa, and guacamole! Service was horrible. Our waiter might have had four tables and one table with a family of six that spoke, I think, Spanish, he dedicated the entire time to serve and converse with them while we had to constantly motion other staff members for help in getting extra things for our table and our bill. He never once came back to see if we needed extra drinks or how our meal was because he was too busy chatting with the one table most of the time

We know Mexican food and this restaurant did an excellent job. Pretty much everything was delicious. Two of our favorite restaurants in the Carmel-Monterey area is Spotted Duck in Pacific Grove and Nicolas Cocina de Herencia in Carmel.

This is a beautiful medium sized restaurant hidden away in a multi tenant building. The decor is really beautiful and the service was flawless. 6 of us went and everyone loved the food and the very creative drinks! Excellent place for small or larger groups. I will go again when I return to Carmel!
