What Insiders Are Saying
Delicious food, amazing cookery, a great place to bring your parents and grandparents.
We loved this beautifully decorated spot in the financial district. The large fountain photo on the wall brought memories of being in Paris. Loved the open kitchen which worked efficiently and effortlessly in producing fantastic food. Although one of us was vegetarian, wonderful choices were available. Together, we especially liked: The Caviar, potato, watercress small dish (I could have had two or three of these with wine and be satiated for a day - heaven), the Asparagus bottarga with Meyer lemon was perfectly cooked, just the right texture, taste, and firmness. The Black Cod with artichoke and kalamata olives was full of delightful tastes, while the Morels sorrel, vin jaune was beautifully made. Brilliant flavors and tastes all around. The two of us ended up having three deserts (it was a birthday treat) - all three unique flavors - divine. Bringing this all together was the friendly, yet clearly trained, staff.
The best first course and wine pairing,Oyster with Mendocino riesling-I thought I was at Daniel NYC!
Great Parisian feeling and vibe-each course intricate yet divine. The best meal since NYC a year ago-just superb.
An attractive small restaurant. We shared the grilled cheese as our first course & we both thought it to be the best one ever. I would have the whole one next time I visit as the main course. We enjoyed the main course which was made with a mushroom. Keep in mind that the courses may be small - this is not a restaurant for giant plate filled with food. For those who demand quality this is the place to dine!
Really nice dining experience. Food tasted good, and was really refreshing! The dining room was clean and cozy. Staff was friendly. Price very reasonable. Good overall!
Super overrated. If you like good food that’s flavorful and waitresses that are nice when you’re paying a ton for it, this is not the place for you. All in all, only good thing was the cocktail and then pate.
My friends from New Mexico greatly enjoyed their Lunch. The fish was light and tender ( the plates are beautiful) a perfect balance with the sauce. The morels were delicious! Merci chef Nicolas for the extra dish !!!! It was very thoughtful and sweet. I shall be back for sure!
Finally a modern fine dining concept in San Francisco is comparable to those in Europe. The style is minimal, but the flavors are sophisticated. Outstanding seafood dishes and crafted cocktails. Would go back anytime.
Amazing food and experience
Great service, delicious & imaginative food - perfect setting for our special date!
Pretentious, overpriced, and food ranging from bland to weird. This for the '6-course dinner tasting menu' + wine pairing. Gives tasting menus a bad name.
Everything about this place exceeds expectations
Nico is a gem! We enjoyed the chef's tasting menu, a very price-worthy 6-course voyage through the best items on the menu. Each course was perfectly executed and flavorful, incorporating unusual ingredients but in a natural way. Nothing forced or precious about this place -- just excellent French cuisine in a very nice setting indeed.
Friendly staff, attention to detail in service and food. Creative combinations.
We enjoyed the evening
We spent our anniversary dinner there. It was perfect. We will definitely dine there again. The food was delicious and the wine pairings were well thought out.
This restaurant is superb in every way. Innovative, tasty food. Superior table service. Can't wait to go back for the 4th time. My #1 favorite in the Bay area.
The kitchen started to clean up right in front of guests. The food preparation was in the same place as chemicals for cleaning. Food was average, the service was excellent. Unfortunately, one of the worst dining experience in places with Michelin starts.
Great and imaginative French-inspired cuisine. Our party all enjoyed every course and loved the setting, servers and super open kitchen where you could watch the creations being made! Will definitely be back.
Absolutely one of the best meals considering value, quality, creativity and overall experience. Cannot believe Nico can get even better than Before, please keep up the game!
Wow! I can with HIGH expectations and was still impressed. We did the 6 course Chef’s Menu and each dish was better than the one that preceded it.
Well done! I will be back!
Food portions are small. Price is reasonable for a michelin star restaurant but i wasnt impressed with the taste and overall food quality.
Absolutely outstanding: food, decor, wine list, comparable to fine dining restaurants at 3 times the price. The service was a tiny bit stretched at points, but that is the only slight criticism I could give.
We loved it. The pre-fix does not offer a lot of flexibility for a couple.
Fantastic 6 course tasting menu. The only hiccup was that we asked for no cheese or mushrooms and dish 2 was a mushroom soup. The waiter realized the mistake and gave us an extra dish and comped the corkage. But, our extra dish was just a second dessert. Also bummed we missed the showstopper ‘venison wellington’ later in the meal bc i assume it had a few mushrooms in it. We were jealous of our neighbors as theirs came out. Overall meal was still a great experience. We loved the oysters, monk fish, and popsicle dessert the most. Well be back.
I'm still really shocked and confused about my whole experience at Nico. I dined here for a late Valentines dinner and was hoping for an excellent meal. We opted for the chef's choice 6 course dinner menu for $89 per person.
The dinner started with some fresh bread and butter. The bread was decent and gave me hope for the rest of the dishes. The first course was baked oysters with brown butter and budha's hand. The oysters were small and pretty bland. I can't believe this counted as one of the 6 courses. Next came the madeleines with shaved black truffle. I had high expectations of these as everyone raves about them. This was probably the best dish of the night.
The next dishes were off menu. The beets came with an orange puree. The beets were a little too hard in texture for my liking. The singled sided seared scallops stuffed with truffle and an egg puree sauce came out next. The flavors of the egg puree was something I had never tasted, and kind of grew on me with each bite. The main dish was a piece of pork shoulder with sorrels. The meat was extremely rough and chewy. I asked the waiter if that's how the texture of the meat should be and he said it should be tender so I know we got a tough piece of meat. The sorrels in this dish were excellent though.
Last came the grapefruit dessert with grapefruit sorbet. Grapefruit is one of my least favorite fruits, so I guess it's not the fault of the restaurant for not knowing that. I could barely finish the dessert because of the sourness of the grapefruit. I should have asked in the beginning what kind dishes were going to be served. Luckily, they brought out another dessert, which was the popsicles dipped in white chocolate, which ended my night on a less sour note.
Overall, I felt most of the dishes felt flat. Although the flavor profiles of each dish were interesting, I did not find any one dish to be spectacular. Many of the courses were off menu, and they should definitely stay like that.
It was a Valentines dinner celebrating 50+ years of being together. We had been to Nico about 6 mos. ago and loved it. Then, the prix fixe was $85/pp and when I booked the current ressie online, it gave the same price. We were shocked when the current menu said $130/pp, which was about a 50% rise in price. That was hard to take! Some was an increase due to Valentines and possibly getting a Michelin star, but the level on change was usurious. Other than feeling rooked, the service and food quality was great.
Outstanding food and service. I will definitely be back
With the introduction of an ala carte menu Nico made your choices more complicated. The prix fixe menu, even at a $20 increase, still gives you the most bang for you buck but may be more food than you want. Ordering the ala carte brings down the price a bit and you get more control over what you eat. The wine prices, unfortunately, have increased to the point of being annoying.
Great food, friendly and knowledgeable service. Excellent value. Cozy space. Will return!
Excellent food with a very inattentive service. We were seated 10 minutes late without an apology. Not even once did anyone offer to pour our bottle of wine for us. Felt very rushed for this caliber of a restaurant.
Food was very average. Some dishes were bland; others were just weird...strange flavor combinations and all 5 of us were very underwhelmed. Then, the biggest detractor was the service. While they were attentive, they were all stone faced. No smiles...almost frowning the whole time. And they seemed put out. It was overall, just a weird, lackluster experience. Won't be returning.
Great service and atmosphere. As vegetarians, food options are limited
I went here on New Year's Eve and my partner and I had the "New Year's Eve Special 6 course menu". Every dish was a surprise and it made me want to go again and order on the regular menu. Highly recommend this place and one should get all dressed up because Nico makes you feel like you should be dressed up.
Birthday dinner for my sister and her French husband, we had the six-course and every bite was delicious. Rich in a light handed way and savory, in straightforward preparations of scallops, duck, and black cod. Flavor combinations pleased my brother-in-law and made him think back to his grandmother’s cuisine. Warm welcome and service. A splendid success.
Exquisitely prepared dishes. Excellent service by a small dedicated staff.
A very nice fixed menu. Good service and wonderful food.
Could barely hear our server. She also had no energy. Food was good, but nothing memorable.
Fantastic prices at a steal! Every dish we had was inventive and delicious, the staff was attentive but not overbearing. A must try.
Three course lunch was beautiful. Very high service levels, but at times felt a little pretentious. Gorgeous restaurant with bustling open kitchen.
Exceptional meal. The blini, scallops, and savory madeleines with Périgord truffles were highlights. Merci Nico team!
