We had a reservation made but the host insisted we sit at the counter which turned out to be fun watching the chef (although I would have liked the option to sit at a booth if we wanted). Our server was prompt and working hard and brought out the food pretty timely for a Saturday night. The issue is the food itself which was unfortunately lacking in flavor, the pasta was cold without the slightest hint of truffle, and the Brussels sprouts overcooked to burnt crisps. For the price, dinner here is absolutely not worth it.
The food was delicious and our server Brandt was attentive and knowledgeable.
We were well attended to. Food was delicious. I would recommend and return to fine again.
Delicious says it all. We were seated at the Chef's table and chefs were engaging & answered all questions. The Brussels sprout bruschetta appetizer is incredible.
I was familiar with Nico from previous experiences on my personal dime - all good. This time with work colleagues did not disappoint either. I understand that Mondays are usually not the days that most restaurants put their A-team on rotation. On the contrary, the Nico staff that evening was excellent. They always make you feel special. To me, that kind of welcome counts for a lot. And oh yes ... the food was fantastic too! You won’t go wrong with any of their house-made pastas. Enjoy !
Thé Bolognese pasta was amazing! The cheese was generously added to make it scrumptious!
Deferential and attentive service topped it off!
Love this place!
The restaurant wasn’t crowded but they sat us on top of another table. Service was extremely slow compounded by being so cramped. The food was okay but not outstanding especially for the price. I’d say not worth a trip.
We sat at the chef’s table (really a bar) for dinner. My husband and I were in Chicago for a weekend getaway and Nico was a recommendation. The service was great and the food was delicious. We started with the Hamachi app and the Brussel sprout Bruschetta. Amazing flavor and presentation. It was fun watching the chefs prepare all of the courses. For dinner, we shared the Rigatoni and meatballs. For dessert, homemade German Chocolate cake with coconut/lime serbetto. Highly recommend for a great spot in a great area.
Unfortunately this restaurant is not the same as it was when it opened. I’ve probably been here a dozen times but last summer it changed management and it was once one of the best Italian restaurants in Chicago and now it is slightly above average. The menu choices are the same but the sauces are not. They even changes the bread since they no longer are a sister restaurant to Publican bakery.
The room was less than half filled, a reflection that we were not the only ones who have noticed the change.
A shame as The old Nico will be sorely missed.
We went for brunch. The smoked salmon scramble was amazing. I was reluctant at first since I was used to cold smoked salmon, but I was told it was good... They were right. I would order it again. The brussel sprout bruschetta was also really good. Highly recommend!
Nico's is one of my favorites -- a "go-to" on a regular basis.
The food was exceptional! Don’t skip the Brussels Sprout Bruschetta! The service was attentive, but not intrusive. Our server was knowledgeable and welcoming. We love meals at Nico!
My favorite restaurant ever
They gave us a bad table on a night where they were 2/3 full and the service/information was limited. We are foodies looking to learn. Our server wasn’t particularly ready to discuss the menu. We had to draw info out of him. Luckily, we made good choices. The food was OUTSTANDING. (Maybe all the choices are good because the quality and taste was first rate). We would definitely go back with the hope that we wouldn’t get scrunched into a tiny table and with a server who wanted to talk about this dynamic menu.
Great service and the food was amazing. Really great wine list if you like Italian wines.
Had a great New Year’s Eve dinner!
I stopped in for lunch as a single. I had a cheerful waitress excellent Bolognese a and a nice glass of wine at a reasonable price and a wonderful ambience
Amazing service and great omelette.
What a great “Experience “ this was!!
We were offered to sit at the chef / kitchen counter and decided to give it a try, what a Special treat!!
Chef MIchael and Daniel have an artist’s touch when putting together the delicious appetizers. It was a special treat to get to watch their passion for Cooking in action!! They are also very engaged with the customers which was really nice!! Will definitely try for the counter again!!
The Brussel sprout bruschetta is Amazing!! We almost ordered a 2nd one!!
The tuna sausage pasta is very unique and tasty. I’d opt for a little less red chili next time.
A few people around us had the Bronzino and they all said it was fantastic! The mushroom tagliatelle was also extremely good.
Nice wine selection
We truly enjoyed our dining experience and Chef MIchael and Danny made it Extra special - Thanks
Would definitely recommend!
This was our first visit to Nico Osteria and we will definitely be going back. Food was fantastic, great wine list and wonderful waiter.
We went to celebrate my sisters engagement. The hostesses were extremely kind. The food was incredible. The waitress was awful. Two ordered drinks and the waitress walked away before asking the rest. She had no opinion on the menu when we asked her favorite or details. She was short in comments back and rude all together. We almost asked for a new waitress, but decided not to cause an issue. The food was incredible! Just bad service at the table.
Sat at the chefs bar, used to see the chucking oysters but now just look at plates to be used later.
Good food and service....
Went to Nico for their Christmas dinner and was not disappointed. The food was delicious, so flavorful, and cooked perfectly! Our server was excellent, helpful, attentive, and nice. The ambiance was both festive and sophisticated. And special thanks to Edwin Castillo the Mgr, who was instrumental in making it all possible.
My friend and I enjoyed Christmas dinner with a four course serving. .We were seated at the chef’s table and enjoyed talking with the chef. Everything from the soup to the entrée to the dessert was absolutely outstanding. The ambience is amazing and I can’t wait to go back again. The service overall was very good but just a little bit of a mess here and there
Such an amazing restaurant and staff members are fantastic. Gorgeous location too. Our soups and salads were both great, but the chef unfortunately made the (to be fair, typical) assumption that vegetarians only eat vegetables 🤦♀️ Otherwise, an extremely enjoyable meal, and staff members are a credit to this restaurant. Superb.
We have eaten here for Christmas lunch several times each of them slightly uncomfortable due to the crowd..the closeness of the tables and the noise..this did not distract from the food but is always a consideration.
This year we dined here and the place was ALOT less busy ..maybe more people were away but we were seated immediately when we arrived and there was no one waiting at all. We were seated in the area behind where you can sit up at the counter and watch the kitchen prepare the food. On Christmas you can order off the menu or you can get the special Christmas day menu which was a 3 course meal for 80$. We both opted for the special menu. We started off with a warm chestnut soup and a kale salad. I then had the lamb entree with greens and then finished with an apple tart. Our server was great but there were a couple times we had to look for him. As we said the tables in the middle where we sat are very close together so it is kindve intrusive sitting so close to your neighbors and in their conversation but all in all a very nice meal and time.
Disappointed in food and presentation.
The feast of seven fishes was about quantity and not quality.
We decided to take my family to one of our neighborhood favorites. Unfortunately, they disappointed us on this visit.
First we arrived early and asked if we could be seated 45 minutes early (the restaurant was just opening). They said they'd text us if our table was ready early (how could it not be ready, it is just opening?). We were not seated early and went to the podium at our reservation time only to be asked for our name again (hello, don't you already have our name if you're planning to tex us?).
Second, we were told only upon seating that due to the holiday they would be serving a 7 course holiday meal at $100 per person, with only a limited menu otherwise. With 3 children with us, we weren't ordering the $100 set menu and the other menu was quite limited, with many of our favorites not available.
Finally, due to the limited menu, we ordered appetizers, then salads, then entrees. Our entrees were delivered prior to our salads.
Three strikes Nico. A very disappointing experience on Christmas Eve.
We booked a table for four for a special holiday dinner, and all agreed that the food was delicious. The crudo selection was really interesting- we tried the Amberjack, which was nuanced in flavor and well-prepared. The Brussels Sprouts Bruschetta was a big hit, and our selection of pastas was terrific- each one a winner. The service was friendly, though slow and uneven. We were a bit disappointed with the ambiance- some candlelight, perhaps flowers, some softer edges, and a more welcoming, festive feel would have been appreciated and made it more of a special evening for us.
I liked rigatoni last time. However, it was not good this time.
The entire experience was great, really enjoyed the evening! The Waite staff was very friendly and courteous!
Food was great, cocktails and wine made for a pleasant night. We will return.
Another wonderful experience at one of our favorite restaurants in the city. The food, drinks, wine, service and ambience were all excellent as always. And we love the Gold Coast location.
Service was terrible, I had to flag down staff on my own to have table bussed. The courses came out so slow, and when they did all were cool and under seasoned. This was a very under whelming meal, and completely over priced for the quality and service.

Anniversary dinner w/ Boo
Seated in a booth at the north-facing window. Seats were quite comfortable
Opening cocktails were finely crafted (a Hemingway and a Decadence)
Oysters (both east coast) were delectable, however they were unfortunately dressed with mignonette without prior notification. As these were higher quality oysters, and as I enjoy mine straight up, this was a let-down, especially as there was no notification on the menu or from our waiter (who was mostly commendable otherwise).
Next round was cacio e pepe which was fine.
Main course was a dry-aged ribeye that came with roasted garlic and bone marrow. For a side we had the butterball potatoes.
The meat was cooked satisfactorily, however they stumbled by slicing it unevenly and overly thick. The garlic did not have the proper roasted quality, seeming like it was instead placed in a dehydrator. As for the bone marrow, I can't say anything good about it. It was a paltry sum of overseasoned, foul-tasting goop.
Overall this was a sadly underwhelming meal at a restaurant where I've had nothing but good experiences in the past. Perhaps this was an off night, perhaps this is how things are there normally now. I'll come back but I won't look forward to it as much as I did before tonight.
The food was really good. Service was great. The liquor and wine selection was slightly limited.
We stayed at the Thompson Hotel and spent most of our time in the city but on Sunday night we stayed in and had dinner at Nico. The food was delicious. Our server was informative and friendly. It is a great neighbourhood to people watch so the window seats were perfect. A great way to end our trip to Chicago and would definitely recommend.
The food was all very well executed! Brussels sprout bruschetta and cacio e pepe both. It to be missed 🙌🏼
There must be a new chef. The rigatoni bolognese had a new preparation—a tomato base. 3 of the guest had it and did not like it. Previously, it was the best in town, now not good. Also, the bread service has changed, not good.
