Nico Kitchen & Bar - Newark Ratings and Reviews
We went to Nico's before seeing a concert at NJPAC and while the food and ambience was wonderful, I have to give a huge shout out to the service. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful, and helpful. She even left the restaurant to go to the box office to help me with a problem I was having with my tickets! My husband and I had a great evening. We would definitely come back!
The place was great but Open Table did not provide all the dining time options when I was making reservations. Thankfully the restaurant called me to see about an earlier time, which was essential for their three course, very delicious menu.
We went to Nico''s before a show we were attending at NJPAC. Very convenient- they told us to allow 2 hours before showtime- perfect timing. Had limited menu but good choices, very tasty and great service. We are attending another show there in April, and will definitely go to Nico's for dinner beforehand.
For the price, I was disappointed with the food. I also wasn't expecting the "performance menu." The cake was too dry to eat, the steak had an odd sour flavor that was very discordant with the onions. We didn't finish anything we were served except our salads—it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either and for the cost, I expected to be wowed. Even the creme brulee was bitter (the out of season strawberries maybe?). Our server was very nice and the restaurant was convenient to the event we were attending next door.
The service and the food were excellent. I have been to this restaurant several times over the years it has been in business and have enjoyed it each and every time. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for lunch, or dinner or a quick meal before going to the PAC. I have never been disappointed in this restaurant.
Had dinner at nico with my daughter before the Neil deGrasse Tyson show. We showed up a little late (after 7) because of traffic but they were very accommodating and we were able to order and eat in time for the show. She loved the fruit kabobs that came with her sliders from the kids menu and my salmon was cooked a perfect medium. We shared a chocolate cake which was delicious! We'd definitely eat there again if we come back for a show.
We ate at Nico because we were going to a performance that evening at NJPAC. While waiting for our food, we ordered drinks. I asked for a martini, a little dirty. I basically got olive juice with a little vodka. Their soup of the day was a shrimp bisque. It was fairly good, marred only by the odd choice of putting raw onion as a garnish. My daughter liked the chicken pot pie. It was huge. My gnocchi was fair, a little pasty and the sauce needed more seasoning. I suppose I would eat there again if attending something at NJPAC, but otherwise would pass
A group of us from work had dinner here before a Christmas concert. Several of us arrived early and they seated part of the group and we enjoyed delicious cocktails until the rest of our party arrived. We were seated at a round, corner booth that was quite comfy and afforded a great view of the entire bar/dining area. Our server and server-in-training were fun and professional and served us well. The drinks were interesting and hit the spot and the appetizers and entrees were served in a timely and professional manner. I’ll certainly be back.
The restaurant is in a great location if you are going to NJPAC for a concert but the food is not the best. We ordered a steak the plate it’s self was dangerously hot but the food was stone cold. My creme brûlée was cooked on the top but cold in the inside. If it wasn't for our waitress who was amazing I think I would have complained about the food......and to top it off the manager or the owner walked around to each table but did not flatter an eyelash at us which was very weird. Unfortunately, I don’t think I would eat there again if I happen to go to another concert there.
Conveniently located outside New Jersey Performing Arts Center was the only thing I could appreciate since I was going to see a show. If you’re considering going you need to know the menu doesn’t have many choices and it’s pre-fixed. In other words your meal comes with appetizers (soup/salad), a main course and desert. That didn’t work for me because I couldn’t just get a salad or add chicken to the salad and I couldn’t order any sides separate. The ambience beats the menu and service. Service wasn’t great, I had to chase down my waitress a few times. I expected better!
The good news is that the food was great. All 4 of us loved our meals. After eating here 5-6 times, the food quality is consistently superb. In spite of my rating, the wait staff was fine, but the staff or kitchen seemed overwhelmed even for a pre-fixe, pre-theatre meal that should have been served much faster. We arrived at 6:40 for 6:45 reservations and were promptly seated. Our served came to our table at 7 pm; we promptly gave her all of our order (beverages, entree and desserts). Our first course was served at 7:15 and our entrees at 7:30. By the time dessert arrived, we had to go to the 8 pm performance. The server suggested that we return after the performance for our desserts. When we did, it seemed that the kitchen and hostess knew little about it and we waited 30 minutes again. The couple sitting next to us also waited 30 minutes to just get bar food. We've never had this experience before, but it was especially irksome when we expected to have a nice, relaxed pre-theatre meal. We also saw a couple arrive after us and get served their meal and dessert before we even got our entrée!
Although the price fixe menu seemed reasonable, after eating what was an inedible main course of salmon en croute, it was far too expensive. The appetizer of pear and Gorgonzola cheese with a light salad was satisfying and the chocolate mousse was dessert delicious with a wonderful presentation. However, the main dish lacked presentation and quality ingredients. The salmon en croute was served on top of a thick cream sauce with several asparagus stalks embedded in it. Atop the salmon was a “mushroom?” Which looked like a long tongue grilled in a pan, also tough and inedible. The salmon seemed old, smelled fishy, and dried out. I don’t usually complain, but I did tell the management. Some apologies were received, but they could have offered some compensation or coffee or something. However, they did not. Too bad, because their being in NJPac was so convenient. We will not return.
Over all it was fine..however the front desk seemed rather disorganized and told us that there was no reservation and no table..after some confused minutes, they seated us to a table. It was clear that the restaurant was not fully booked that night. So why were we told that they did not have a table for us just because they did not find us on the reservation list?
It would have been less unpleasant if they had offered a simple apology for the inconvenience/misunderstanding.
The server was cheerful and polite which made up for the initial unpleasantness.
They did honor our reservations, but Nico's was totally overwhelmed Friday 11/10/17 because of the Jazz Festival and multiples events (at least 2). The waitress either put in an incorrect and more expensive order or thought we wouldn't notice the additional charge of $20? (we'd ordered the smaller size of steak and were charged for the 16 ozs. serving. Who needs that much steak?) I had to wave at the hostess to get my glass of wine. The bus staff was trying very hard but was understaffed for the number of people there. We'd both ordered the strip steak. I ordered rare, but med. or medium rare came out. Had to wait. We both decided that the steak cut was too chewy for our tastes anyway. My roasted tomato soup was excellent. Desserts were v.g., but we had to rush out for our concert start time. Didn't have time to finish them. (We arrived at 6; concert started at 7:30.) Good value as they included a starter and dessert with the charge for the main course.
