About Nice Matin
"Nice Matin, named after the largest daily newspaper in the South of France, gives the Upper West Side a splash of Provençal sunshine and a heady introduction to the cuisine of Nice, home of the pissaladière, pan bagnat and, if we are to believe the menu, a whopping big burger topped with comté cheese, smeared with aioli and served with a heap of rosemary-flecked fries. It's the best thing to happen to a hamburger since Daniel Boulud worked foie gras and short ribs into an all-beef patty. The pleasure is all on the plate, and it carries right through to the desserts.", William Grimes - NY Times.

Nice Matin Ratings and Reviews
We were treated well from the moment we walked through the door. We arrived about 30 minutes before our reservation time but we were seated right away. The food was wonderful and the wine was lovely (but rather expensive) . We would definitely eat there again
We have eaten at Nice Matin many times in the last 15 years and have always had really good food, excellent wine and good service. Sadly on Friday night...when we invited friends who had never been to Nice Matin...the restaurant really let us down. We arrived at 6:15 in order to have a relaxed dinner before an 8:30 movie. Our waiter was appallingly inattentive. We ordered drinks and placed our orders shortly after 6:30. Close to 7, two salads arrived. The third one appeared 10 minutes later after repeated requests. Our main courses finally showed up at 7:30 after chasing our waiter and reminding him that we needed to leave the restaurant by 8 o'clock to get to the movie. We gobbled dinner and then waited for the check. And speaking of dinner, that, too, was disappointing. I have had their sole Milanese a dozen times. Friday's serving was just ok. Not great fish, and not a great presentation. My husband's salmon looked lovely, albeit a rather small serving, but again was not great fish. Nice Matin has been our go to restaurant, but after this experience, we will be going elsewhere.
Uninspired kitchen. Whoever made our (3) dinners was bored or asleep or both. Chicken Paillard was bland and over-cooked. The chick pea flatbread entree would have been good if the veggies weren't overcooked. And BLAND. The third entree so bland it has been forgotten.
This is not NICE cuisine. Cute interior, robotic/tired servers.
Have been to Nice Matin a number of times and liked it. However, we were not happy with the last time. We were there at 10 am on Sunday to meet two friends. By 10:55 we were presented with the bill and had the waiter and bus boys arriving several times to clear the table. We definitely felt we were being hustled out, despite the fact that several tables were still empty and we had only been there an hour. I complained to one of the managers and was assured that this was not a matter of policy. We left uncertain as to whether that was the case or not.
This used to be one of our favorite upper west side venues but it's dropping down on my list. Friday's dinner was only so-so. Husband's lamb and kale salad were very good. My mussels were either under or overcooked and the provencale sauce was heavy and salty but not flavorful. Apple tart was chewy like it had been microwaved warm. And the chocolate latte at the end tasted like someone dumped a bottle of Hershey's syrup in the coffee.
I'm not saying not to visit this restaurant. It is still nice French food with great service and value. I'm hoping we just hit an off night because the meal was definitely not as good as we have had there many times in the past.
For a last minute, Saturday 9pm dinner with my older sister who was visiting, I wanted to take her to one of my favorites. Turns out, she reminded me that we had eaten here twice in the past under similar circumstances. Guess that means I really like the place. The noise level didn't interfere with our talk about an Andy Borowitz performance we had just gone to. And the cocktails and short rib ravioli were just right.
Food was tasteless. No seasoning at all. I could run that kitchen and I have no experience. The special of the day was bouillabaisse. No seasoning, two shrimp that should have been served two days ago, a few pieces of calamari overdone. My wife had the Chicken grilled under a brick I think they served her the brick! Unfortunate given the ratings we trusted that we would have a great experience. Other than the service completely disappointed.
I will be going back. Terrific menu at reasonable prices. My recommended salmon was cooked perfectly to my request - rare. The risotto was sufficiently cooked (I find some chefs take al dente to a raw level). The recommended dessert, bread pudding, was not too sweet; the walnut ice cream on a bed of crunchy bits was the perfect sweet balance. Waitperson was knowledgeable. Food service not necessarily polished, but pleasant enough. Noisy. Clientele represented varied ages and ethnicities, but predominantly retirement age and Caucasian.
We made the mistake of mentioning to the waitress that we were in a bit of a slight rush when placing our order. They proceeded to seat, take orders from, and serve at least 4 other tables around us before we even got refills on our drinks. By the time we got our food (oatmeal, bagel, toast, bacon, one omelet) at least one of the tables that had come in after us had already paid and left. Overall, the waitress was rude, impatient, and unhelpful.
We wanted to attend the First Baptist Church of the City of New York. Nice Matin is nearby as is Green Flea in the opposite direction. Generous portions, lovely food, charming decor, friendly staff--best way to begin your day or to be refreshed in the middle of it.
