About Nice Matin
"Nice Matin, named after the largest daily newspaper in the South of France, gives the Upper West Side a splash of Provençal sunshine and a heady introduction to the cuisine of Nice, home of the pissaladière, pan bagnat and, if we are to believe the menu, a whopping big burger topped with comté cheese, smeared with aioli and served with a heap of rosemary-flecked fries. It's the best thing to happen to a hamburger since Daniel Boulud worked foie gras and short ribs into an all-beef patty. The pleasure is all on the plate, and it carries right through to the desserts.", William Grimes - NY Times.

Nice Matin Ratings and Reviews
I was very disappointed with my lunch. I started with Duck Liver Mouse Pate. It came out ice cold. As it began to warm, the consistency was "granular" as if it had been frozen and thawed and frozen several times. I sent it back. My main arrived, ravioli, which was slightly cold and stuck together - plated and sat under a warmer. Staff was somewhat indifferent but said they'd tell the chef. Can't say I'll return any time soon.
Good food, well-prepared, menu full of lots of choices. Gets crowded early so noise level makes easy conversation challenging unless you are luck enough to snatch a table on the sides of the room; many tables of 2 are very close together. Service is fair. We had a lovely waitress but her heavy accent made her input somewhat unintelligible.
All of the food was well prepared and the service was excellent. This restaurant remains one of my favorites for New York City. It's got a very pleasant ambiance, the menu is varied, and the prices are not over the top. It's a large space and you don't feel crowded as you do in many of the other restaurants in the area.
Nice Matin is my Upper West Side standby, and it never disappoints. Its menu is inventive and changes regularly, the staff is friendly and accomplished, the atmosphere is relaxing and beautiful. It's one of my favorite spots and I'm so glad that after so long, it's still here.
This French restaurant is truly a gem on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Excellent service, tables NOT on top of each other, nice menu, wonderful food, and an outstanding Prix Fixe lunch option. The mussels were delicious and the portion was generous. The soup of the day - creamed cauliflower -was excellent, not weighed down by cream. What I liked best however was how comfortable the restaurant is, unlike my image of a French restaurant. So perfect for the West Side!
Eaten here twice I nast week. Everything was excellent. Service was better than adequate, though I had to ask for bread. Big French wine list as well as a fair group of by the glass. Small number of lower priced 40 a 60 bottles, most in the 90 - 175 range. Very reliable not overly expensive local restaurant.
We were treated well from the moment we walked through the door. We arrived about 30 minutes before our reservation time but we were seated right away. The food was wonderful and the wine was lovely (but rather expensive) . We would definitely eat there again
We have eaten at Nice Matin many times in the last 15 years and have always had really good food, excellent wine and good service. Sadly on Friday night...when we invited friends who had never been to Nice Matin...the restaurant really let us down. We arrived at 6:15 in order to have a relaxed dinner before an 8:30 movie. Our waiter was appallingly inattentive. We ordered drinks and placed our orders shortly after 6:30. Close to 7, two salads arrived. The third one appeared 10 minutes later after repeated requests. Our main courses finally showed up at 7:30 after chasing our waiter and reminding him that we needed to leave the restaurant by 8 o'clock to get to the movie. We gobbled dinner and then waited for the check. And speaking of dinner, that, too, was disappointing. I have had their sole Milanese a dozen times. Friday's serving was just ok. Not great fish, and not a great presentation. My husband's salmon looked lovely, albeit a rather small serving, but again was not great fish. Nice Matin has been our go to restaurant, but after this experience, we will be going elsewhere.
Uninspired kitchen. Whoever made our (3) dinners was bored or asleep or both. Chicken Paillard was bland and over-cooked. The chick pea flatbread entree would have been good if the veggies weren't overcooked. And BLAND. The third entree so bland it has been forgotten.
This is not NICE cuisine. Cute interior, robotic/tired servers.
Have been to Nice Matin a number of times and liked it. However, we were not happy with the last time. We were there at 10 am on Sunday to meet two friends. By 10:55 we were presented with the bill and had the waiter and bus boys arriving several times to clear the table. We definitely felt we were being hustled out, despite the fact that several tables were still empty and we had only been there an hour. I complained to one of the managers and was assured that this was not a matter of policy. We left uncertain as to whether that was the case or not.
This used to be one of our favorite upper west side venues but it's dropping down on my list. Friday's dinner was only so-so. Husband's lamb and kale salad were very good. My mussels were either under or overcooked and the provencale sauce was heavy and salty but not flavorful. Apple tart was chewy like it had been microwaved warm. And the chocolate latte at the end tasted like someone dumped a bottle of Hershey's syrup in the coffee.
I'm not saying not to visit this restaurant. It is still nice French food with great service and value. I'm hoping we just hit an off night because the meal was definitely not as good as we have had there many times in the past.
