New Hotel Mertens has taken meaningful steps to mitigate the spread of Covid-2 including utilizing our extra dining room to create extraordinary separation between our tables. See newhotelmertens.com/covid for details. We are a traditional French brasserie set in a historic 1914-built former hotel lobby and dining room that preserves and celebrates Grand Rapids' past. We serve a time-tested French menu including many of the classics. In addition to an extensive French wine selection, New Hotel Mertens stocks the largest Michigan wine list in the world; including many that are not readily available in West Michigan. The cocktail list is an exact replica of the drinks and menu design from the New Hotel Mertens bar, circa 1939 and includes 50 cocktails that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago. The restaurant's rooftop cocktail lounge is open seasonally and does not accept reservations.

Really enjoyed our recent visit. Restaurant was quiet due to Coronavirus...we visited the Saturday before the big lockdown and shutdown began But service was attentive and friendly and our food was flavorful and fresh. Highly recommend the cheese cart...fun experience and great cheeses.

We celebrated my Wife’s birthday with 8 other of our closest friends , sat and ate for about 3 hours and were waited on hand and foot! Great experience ! Thanks for a wonderful memory shared!

This is a great restaurant with an authentic bistro menu other than the obligatory burger. The foie gras was very well prepared as was the coq au vin. Dessert was a little disappointing - the Croquembouche did not have a lot of flavor, but the profiteroles were much better, just not at the same level as the other courses. The wine list was very well designed with some of the usual excellent suspects but also so other very good wine at a great price. The 1920's cocktail menu is excellent. Last, the service was perfect from both the waiter but also the sommelier who was very knowledgeable and had great suggestions for aperitifs and digestives. We will certainly be back.

This place never disappoints. Greeted by friendly staff and the owner, great drink pre-dinner and then an amazing dinner . Top notch service will make us come back often. A must try in GR.

I reserved a table for my out of town guests and they couldn’t wait to leave... nor could I. Our Waitress “ bar manager” was terrible and ruined our evening.
We sat and watched others experience a great time.
I will not recommend this restaurant.

We enjoyed everything about our meals. Coffee was excellent. We didn’t feel rushed at all. It was nice seeing local Michigan wines on the cart and meeting the winemaker. That was a very nice touch. Gave lower marks for ambiance because there were two tables with very loud people. People who need to be that loud belong in a sports bar, not a nice French restaurant.

The good was good. Service seemed slow, although server was pleasant. We ordered coffee with our dessert and the coffee came 15 minutes before the dessert.

I went there on Valentines Day to enjoy a beautiful cocktail at the bar. I wanted to stop here to check it out because of how beautiful it looked. I love the atmosphere and the vintage decor. I came back the next day for their Saturday afternoon tea. Which was everything I expected then some! Cannot wait to get back.

Drinks were good and service was good. Food was fair at best. Wife's steak was way over cook and my chicken was cold. Sent her steak back and took over 30 minutes for a new one to come out. Very unimpressed.

Well we had a reservation for 7 o’clock and we’re greeted at 7:02, but didn’t get a table till 7:30... while we were waiting there were a total of 8 other tables open. online description for valentines dinner promised to have a candle lit dinner, however we did not have one at our table, every other table did. Otherwise the food was good, the waiter was quite great!

We came for a Valentines Day celebration. The restaurant did not have a special menu, which was fine. Their usual menu has much to offer, mainly French bistro classics. They have a full service bar that does a great job with classic cocktails. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. Our server took our drink and appetizer orders (did not hurry us to order our entrees even though this was a busy evening-thank you for the gracious timing of our meal). The sommelier came by and offered each of us a complementary aperitif-lovely old school touch. A wine steward came with a bottle of wine-not the one I had ordered. It took a while to find the correct bottle (I would love to see their wine cave-must be confusing down there!) but was properly served and was delicious! We shared their mussel appetizer. Oh my. You could swim in that broth. The mussels were plump, tender, sweet and juicy. Our entrees arrived with a flair. Unfortunately, one of the specials was not as described by the server. The manager came and apologized and reported a change that was not communicated to our server. While it was tasty, it wasn't what was expected. I ordered a dish I have not had before-the bouillabaisse. The seafood was served in a bowl and the server then added the saffron broth with a flair. The broth was rich and full of flavor. Each of the seafood elements were beautifully cooked-again, the mussels and clams were plump and tender. We had left room for dessert. I decided to have a cheese course accompanied by a lovely barsac dessert wine-lovely. One of the items ordered was not what was served. Our server having noticed this and the earlier miscue, took the entree item and the dessert off the bill. Even though we enjoyed each of the items. We have eaten a few times here and this was the first time we had any miscues. The service is typically elegant and unrushed. This is a place to enjoy dinner and companionship and not a place to scarf down mass quantities!

Service was good, but the food has declined since our last visit. The frites were different and Luke warm. We had to ask for the aioli and it was runny and tasted like salad dressing. One steak was overcooked and the other under cooked, but we didn’t want to send anything back as the restaurant was full since it was Valentines Day. The noise level was fine until a party of 9 was seated near us, and then it was so loud you couldn’t carry on a conversation. The profiteroles were still amazing as before.

Unique menu. Although not cheap, food was fantastic and worth every penny. Old school drink menu with several old school drinks presented. Serving staff very knowledgeable about types of drinks to go with each meal. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. We will visit again.

Good service, great food, decent price. Room is pretty loud...old style architecture (which was nice) but large, open room with no sound suppression. Also, drink was served to me in a cracked glass.

We enjoyed our time and all the food was delicious with the exception that my Coq Au Vin was so tender (which was good) that I was getting bones in some bites since they were so soft (which was bad). While we understand Hotel Mertens is supposed to reflect a European dining experience, our standard dinner of appetizers, entree and drinks took 3.5 hours and the restaurant wasn’t even at capacity. We didn’t intend to be there all evening.

Attentive service, outstanding food. The music was a bit loud as the evening went on requiring us to speak loudly to have a conversation. Overall worth going again.

My family had a poor experience at New Hotel Mertens. I increased the number in my party 2 weeks prior to my Brunch since Easter. I not only called but changed it on Open Table to a party of 7. I received confirmation from both restaurant and open table. When I arrived with my family, I was told that my reservation had not been changed. I told them I had an email confirming the change but my phone was in my car. The hostess asked me to please go and get my phone to prove the confirmation. There is no parking lot so this was not an easy task. I retrieved my phone and showed her that my party was indeed confirmed for the larger number. They ended up finding a spot for us in a back room where empty boxes and few others were seated. Not the experience I expected on Easter. I would have walked out based on the attitude of the host and hostess however it would not have been easy to find another brunch on Easter. The food was fair at best. They did not even apologize. I will not return.

Dined here a few times and this time, along with the first, we were very satisfied! The cocktails, salads, oysters, and French onion soup were very good. The ambiance of a French bistro is warm and fun and our server, Ashley, was outstanding! A refreshing change from Grand Rapids restaurant scene, check it out!

Service was slow on a night that was not busy. Mussel broth was spilled by server all over wife’s coat on empty seat with barely an apology and no remedy. Dry cleaning bill will be $50+
