New Heights needs new carpeting and new paint!! It is unappetizing to go to a restaurant that has dingy and worn carpets and walls. I was a little embarrassed about the restaurant to which I bought business associates.
Visit from a long standing friend visiting from out of town after a long while
Worst restaurant experience in a very long time. Our group of 5 people ordered a bottle of wine and entrees. The wine took 20 minutes to be served. Bread basket took 30 minutes to arrive and we waited one hour and 20 minutes for our food. When we asked what the delay was about the hostess told us “ everybody arrived at the same time” and offered no apology for the delay. Her explanation was obviously not true as we watched other guests come later . Food was okay when it finally arrived . Servings were more focused on presentation than size. I got 4 scallops for $26 and nothing but some decoration on the plate. Another guest got three very small pieces of pork tenderloin. We picked this restaurant because it was across the street from our hotel. My best advice is to find another restaurant since these folks do not seem to are much about customer experience.
Excellent restaurant in a very good setting. Outstanding food, somewhat reasonable prices, very good service.
Unfortunately, we found the food to be less than average. There are so many other alternatives in the area where menues are keeping up with the times. The menu read great, but the food was boring. Though our server was charming, the rest of the dining room staff did not work together and we found ourselves waiting long periods for food and refills for drinks. The bartender at the front of the restuarants was almost too busy setting up his empty bar than to greet us walking in.
The food at New Heights is always inventive, and the new spring menu didn't disappoint. We'll have to get back soon to try the items we didn't order this time.
At a conference and spending time with family
Aside from the bussing and water pouring, the service was abysmal. We waited close to 40 minutes for them to take a drink order and then another 20 for the food order. I got the prix fixe menu. The first course - sweet potato soup - was great. The second - duck breast - was tough and dry. Dessert was disappointing. All around a pretty bad experience.
Have dined at New Heights several times over the past few years... usually when I'm participating in a conference being held at the Marriott Wardman Park. This time the service felt a bit haphazard, although our server was as sweet as could be. The food, too, was inconsistent. My colleague and I shared the friend oysters starter which was presented beautifully, but our first bit indicated that someone might have forgotten the salt. Both our entrees (the halibut and the shrimp noodle dish from the appetizer menu) were also beautifully presented but both on the salty side. To be fair, the place was packed... but it was a bit disappointing, particularly as I had boasted about the food to my colleague. Hopefully, it was just a bad night for them.
Staff were very attentive; crab cakes were delicious. Apple crumb was ok - creative but not our favorite.
Comfortable place to dine alone. I was there on business and without friends. Wanted a nice dinner and didn’t want to venture far from the Marriottt Wardman where I was staying. Had a very interesting “Perfect Stranger” martini with balsamic (first time flavor in a martini) and it was good! Had three appetizers for dinner and they were filling. Brussels sprouts, salmon, and corn-lobster soup. All delicious!
I have been coming to this restaurant for years. The quality of the food, the expertise of the wait staff and the imaginative menu continue to be first class. I have successfully entertained colleagues with sophisticated pallets on multiple occasions. In my book, New Heights is always a winner.
Exceptional service, fantastic food, and very good wine list!
Chef Tony Glass always delivers with delicious and creative dishes that are a feast for both the eyes and the stomach! The cocktails are sublime and the wine selection is well rounded. Service is wonderful and attentive. Owner Umbi, with his team, has created an overall outstandingly dining experience for his customers!
We were there on a busy evening after a hiatus of five years or so, and were pleased to find New Heights' high standards for service and cuisine maintained despite the exceptional (conference-related) crowd. After thirty years in this tourist-heavy neighborhood it would have been easy to let standards slip. My friend was happy with her jackfruit-and-endive salad and quail, as was I with a mushroom crepe and bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin. The presentation was worthy of a Michelin star. Intelligent and fairly priced (for these days) wine list.
I ate at New Heights on a Saturday night, in February. My reservation was for 6pm. I can't say enough about how great my experience was. The food was amazing, and the wait staff friendly, helpful, and fun. I highly recommend one of the gin and tonics, and the gin Gelato is a must. Would go back in a heartbeat!
Food was meh, service was sub par. Would not go back
My husband and I went for Valentine's Day Dinner because they were advertising a 4 course meal with wine pairings. We have been to this restaurant several times and like it. It is close to our house so we decided to go. We were on time for our 7:15 reservation. They took our order on time. There was a bit of a delay getting our drinks, then we got bread a few minutes after that. However, we did not get our first courses until 8:45. When we said something they gave us 2 drinks complementary. When we got our food it was very good (although the vichyssoise was warm). In the past the service was fine, so I'll chalk it up to Valentine's Day, but really, it wasn't crazy crowded and they had advertised this dinner, so you would think they would be ready.
Lovely dinner at New Heights. Really enjoyed every aspect of my meal. While the service was a little slow, the wait staff were attentive and pleasant.
Always a delicious and delightful dining experience!
AMAZINGLY CREATIVE CHEF!! Every time we eat here the food is creative and absolutely delicious. This visit we had sweet potato soup with a homey thanksgiving comfort flavor then with an amazing spicy kick at the end. I could have eaten a few bowls it was so wonderful. 2nd course was duck breast with cabbage and wonderful romenesco - Large portion that was absolutely delicious!! Couldn’t resist dessert - deconstructed apple pie - edgy and fun and melt in your mouth fabulous with bourbon ice cream!
Service was attentive and personable. Overall experience - top notch all the way!
A really great meal for a reasonable price. Don't overlook this longtime DC favorite.
Hadn’t been in a long time. The food was truly excellent...can’t wait to go back.
1- we made reservation and there was clear place to receive us; we assumed a waiting area and waited for direction.
2- got seated and service was very slow and inattentive.
3- had to remind people of orders (Brussel sprout and dessert)- not a good showing for visiting (international) friends/colleague.
4- desert was delayed and horrible- no one cared to check on our satisfaction. We had to pay bill and leave because we were running late for a professional social nearby.
Gin drinks excellent! Food good. We arrived about 7 and did not get served dinner until almost 9 PM . We ordered fairly soon, but COOKING AND SERVICE MUCH TOO SLOW! The atmosphere is very pleasant and not too loud. Service was friendly but cooking/serving food and drinks way too slow.
Quiet, balanced menu, nice choice of dishes, amusing service. Good food,
elegantly cooked and prseented.
This was my fourth or fifth time at New Heights over several years. I was disappointed in the service and the food reaction from our group was mixed. The salads were lettuce and a bit of dressing -- no color, no crunch. definitely need to rethink the salad. The oysters had a bad taste and didn't seem fresh--the person ate one and sent the rest back. the beef dishes were fine, cooked to the specified temperatures. so it's probably my last visit to New Heights. There are too many other great options in DC.
Sat there for 40 minutes. No waiter, no water, no menus.
The food was good but service was weak. Never got one of our appetizers. Fish dishes were good.
We appeared to be the lowest priority table in the place. Our waiter disappeared several times, one time for at least 45 minutes.
I’ve never had a less-than-wonderful meal at NH. Bravo!
Neighborhood gem with excellent food, low noise level, and nice lighting.
New Heights consistently provides good food with lots of choices, pleasant service, nice ambiance, quiet setting. We recently celebrated our daughter's birthday. She is on a restrictive diet allowing only small portions. She found lots of choices. Those of us who are hardier eaters also found ample dishes. We all had a great time.
Great food. Bar downstairs extremely noisy. Service OK but nit amicable.
Excellent menu selection which is not extensive but diverse. Dishes are very light but well seasoned with attention to detail in quality sourcing of ingredients and platings. The space is charming with a lovely pastoral view over the treetops of Rock Creek Park. I have been dining at New Heights for over 20 years and have always been delighted.
Excellent food and service. Street noise on Calvert Street tolerable with outside seating (there were only three sets of EMT sirens during the two hours.....) Go there - food and service excellent (but I repeat myself).
Definitely not what I expected based on what I read online... food was poor quality and minimal...shareable sides are not shareable...risotto undercooked...
We have been to New Heights for awhile. The martinis were great. The food was delicious.
Thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Very nice atmosphere and great menu. Also, the chef here is excellent. We enjoyed the soft shell crab, the fried oysters and the hamachi sashimi for appetizers and all were excellent. I thorougly enjoyed every bite of my scallops and my husband enjoyed his duck. It was not overcooked or dry.
New Heights is our favorite restaurant in Washington DC--excellent food and service in a lovely setting.
