The food was very good but I would have liked tablecloths to match the level of the meal. We ate outside on metal grate garden tables. This restaurant is pricey so I expected at least table cloths. The service however was excellent. I had the branzino which was excellent but the rice basil risotto needed more basil.
One of the best restaurants in DC for a dinner where you actually can hear your companions conversations without raising your voices. Very good food, wine and gin drinks; vegetarian options; relaxed and charming atmosphere. We will return.
Fantastic, unpretentious, warm hospitality...just lovely. Thank you!
Fantastic food, and friendly, professional service. This always a favorite of ours. They have a fantastic selection of gins, and an excellent wine list. The dining room is tastefully decorated in rich colors and has views over Rock Creek park.
Very nice and efficient server. The food was a mild disappointment. The wine list was quite good.
We've had the pleasure of dining here a few times and each time more impressive than the last. The service is excellent, the food is amazing, the manager is an absolute delight to speak with, and it isn't noisy or over priced. They are incredibly flexible and accommodating. Truly a gem!
It's nice to have such good food in a soothing quiet room.
Wonderful dinner with very attentive service. Everyone enjoyed their main courses, nice wine list - not huge but solid. Gin is a specialty and they have amazing selection. Owner came by table and when he learned our daughter likes dirty martinis, he brought a special infused gin for her to taste. Just a very nice time.
Very accommodating. If you go early for dinner you can hear yourselves.
We arrived and no one else was in the restaurant (we had a reservation-table for three). There was only one waiter and one busboy but that was fine. We received our drinks and the waiter took our order and that was the last we saw of him. All of a sudden three more large tables came in and he was swamped-- we got our salads and then waited forever for our entrees- even though we ordered before the other large tables came in. We received our entrees and had to ask for more water - no other drinks were offered by the busboy and as I mentioned the waiter never came back but he was swamped with these other tables. We flagged busboy for bill and the waiter brought the check and just said "thanks"-no explanation or apology so our tip reflected such but really this is the fault of management- if all of these tables were reserved you know in advance it will be busy so GET MORE HELP. Poor reflection on your management style not on the poor waiter. Food was great but won't be back
This is a delightful, quiet restaurant with high ceilings and window views. Drinks are plentiful and the menu is varied and well-prepared. We think it's a too-well kept secret
The carrot ginger soup was excellent as was the branzino. They seemed short staffed and things like more water or bread took a while.
We ate at New Heights about a year ago and were most pleased. This time, not the same! Would not recommend.
We have not been to New Heights for many years but we were very happy to return! The food was very good and it was lovely to see the very helpful and pleasant owner again! The restaurant itself could use a bit of a “fresh up” but the food was very tasty.
Don’t get stuck in the back of the upstairs. It was absolutely freezing- huge temp difference with the rest of the floor. They need to get an HVAC guy to balance things out. Also on a slow night we were there for a total of two hours. It took forever to get our food. The food was good but the portions were rather skimpy. No salad dressing on my salad and none was offered. I don’t plan to go back.
Another lovely meal at New Heights. The vegetable dishes were particularly appreciated.
Excellent service, quiet attractive atmosphere and fresh clean menu. Well prepared
I’m hesitant to be so negative b/c the food was quite good, and it was a very pleasant setting, not noisy. But I can’t remember when I was last in a good restaurant w such inattentive service. Maybe it was just an off day where half the staff didn’t show up. Though if that were the case I would have expected an explanation.
Very nice New American cuisine. The food was well-prepared and delicious, and an added feature was a menu of wonderful gins with house-made tonics.
The upstairs portion of this restaurant is a wonderful respite in the Wardham area. Lovely decor, smooth service, great choices of gins and home-made tonics (with interesting herbal mixes), and best of all--reliably, good food. I had the wild mushroom soup as a starter that tasted like wild mushrooms--field tasty. My scallop entree was beautifully prepared, moist, perfectly scented sauce, and ample. They even accommodated my request for one decadent scoop of their home-made dark chocolate ice cream. A fine dining experience that was friendly, quiet, and perfectly enjoyable. I will be back.
One of the few upscale-quality, gracious restaurants in Washington where are you can have a normal conversation without yelling — at affordable prices.
My friend and I tried New Heights because we had seen it while we were strolling in the area. The reviews are excellent, and it lives up to them. The restaurant is on the second floor. The decor is lean and modern, yet warm and comfortable. My friend and I had a window table with a nice view of the area. We began sharing a pan roasted crab cake, served with corn pepper relish and celeriac slaw. The spicing of the crab cake was unique, even though I cannot put my finger on what exactly was different. My friend had pan seared branzino for her entree. It was served with black rice, confit fennel, castelvetrano olive & smoked celeriac. I went with roasted arctic char, served with beluga lentil, dates, pickled ginger & spiced roasted baby carrots. We finished with a slice of cheese cake. As I wrote, the food and the service lived up to the excellent reviews.
Food was delicious! Lovely atmosphere; inviting and comfortable Server was excellent. However; she seemed to be serving the whole restaurant. Service was slow.
Always love New Heights and the Gin Joint below. The menu changes regularly and is always excellent with a good variety of items available.
New Heights is a hidden gem. The food, service and ambiance are outstanding
Great gin selection, but the food was rather underwhelming. The crab cakes were cold. Two orders of them, both cold. And the rest of the dishes were ok, but not great. Overall just an average spot.
Good food, quiet restaurant, easy to get a table. Good wine list and great gin and tonics with extensive selection and artisanal tonics. Decor is a little outdated and restaurant was only a third full on a Friday night. The service was a little much. Maybe because there weren't that many people there our server and busboy kept coming over ever 5 minutes, when we were clearly deep in personal conversation. Were constantly interrupted to take away plates with food still on them, or offer more drinks when our glasses were still have full. Took away from the pleasure of the dinner and good conversation.
This was my second visit to New Heights. I visited in February 2018 and talked about the food for months after. At my most recent visit, February 2019, I wasn't as impressed with the food. The steaks my friends ordered were tough, and my pork tenderloin was dry. Must have been an off night for the chef. The sides we ordered were delicious, and the dessert was good. The service is very personable and attentive. New Heights also makes great drinks, especially anything with gin. If you're unsure what to order, tell them what you like, and they'll pick out something for you. The restaurant is quiet and you can easily hear all your dinner companions. This is a big plus for me.
Dinner at New Heights was good but somewhat short of excellent. The food, service and ambiance were all good.
This was our first visit to this establishment. Fantastic restaurant with great service. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. The menu is excellent, exceeded only by the preparation. Huge selection of gin. We thoroughly enjoyed our Valentine's day experience and friendly conversation with the owner, Mr. Umbi. The place has been around for decades. Mr Umbi graciously shared some memorable moments. One caution, parking in the area is limited, if driving to the restaurant, I would suggest calling ahead to see if valet service is available that night.
The manager provided excellent input on the restaurant's wine collection and offered us an enjoyable cabernet that I had never heard of. Was a welcoming host.
Service - good
Excellent food and wonderful service. Lovely evening
We have been going there over the years, many times with friends who had never been there, and every experience has been excellent. It has been there a long time and remains somewhat undiscovered (or forgotten) of late. Woodley Park Metro is the same block. Limited valet parking is available. The owner is terrific. Their bar on the first floor - The Gin Joint - is a small, cozy spot serving a wide range of excellent cocktails. The Shoreham Hotel is across the street. Excellent service.
I think the food was very solid, but not spectacular. The waiter did an excellent job helping us navigate an incredible gin selection.
New Heights is an undervalued restaurant - but that works in your favor. It's quiet enough for a conversation with friends, and the food is always superb.
Wonderful food and service. The Brussels sprouts are amazing!
We were pretty bummed overall about the space and the service. We all liked our food, but we probably won’t be back.
I think their waitstaff was short on Saturday night. It took quite a while before someone took our drink orders. And then when we were ready to go our waitress disappeared completely for about 20 minutes so I had to enlist another waiter to get her to bring our check. No toilet paper in the ladies room. Otherwise good.
Waited forever to get seated, served, food to come, etc. Garlic parmesan fries were delicious, but the chicken was only so-so
