Lovely restaurant, great food, nice ambiance, painfully slow service.
The food was delicious. Service was very slow but that was probably because of it being Valentine's Day
Average food, but terrible service. Dinner lasted 3+ hours. Our server disappeared several times during the evening, nor was a manager to be found. At times we tried getting her attention, but she never scanned the room.
This was our second visit to New Heights and we were not disappointed. The food was interesting and excellent in each menu category, the cocktails were imaginative and unusual, the service was attentive without being overbearing, and the noise level was blessedly quiet so that we could talk without shouting. I have already recommended New Heights to two friends. Bravo for a meal well done.
Great place for having a business conversation! Very good food and superlative service!
We have had dinner at New Heights several times in the past year and New Heights is always a winner with its creative & fresh cuisine. New Heights is a rarity in DC - it is very quiet. Tom Sietsema, Washington Post food critic, would love the atmosphere (American Arts & Crafts), the food and the noise level. We enthusiastically recommend.
Food was good but in a competitive restaurant environment a little lacking in creativity... it was certainly tasty but similar food may be found for less money.
Ambiance is lacking... it really needs a recharge of its environment.
Finally my waitress was not that attentive or interested in our experience...having worked in a restaurant... my pet peeve is when a waiter walks around like they have tunnel vision.... visiting an adjacent table yet seemingly blind to my attempt to get her attention...
One plus... the owner I think was on site and was chatting with some people who I assume are regulars there. It's a good sign to see the owner keeping an eye on things... but his involvement appeared to be be mostly social.
I have now dined here 4 times
I will not plan to return
What a festive New Year's Eve dinner. Prix fixe, four courses, wine pairings. Lively atmosphere but quiet enough to talk. A very nice evening celebration.
They took wonderful care of me when I tripped on the curb and fell on my face in the street after dinner (totally my fault)
Food and service were excellent. The NYE menu gave many options and I must say that it was on of the best meals I have ever had.
We came for a birthday dinner on December 30th. We were one of only a few parties in the restaurant and we had a lovely meal. The service was very good. The cocktails with the house-made tonics were tasty, and the ambiance was perfect for catching up with people. Afterwards, we wandered down to the Gin Joint bar to try even more of its massive selection of Gin.
My daughter and I went to dinner at New Heights on Christmas Eve. We had an amazing dinner. The food was fabulous and the service was great. The drinks were a bit pricey. Overall a great dining experience
Prix fixe menu wonderful choices, scallop and duck breast exceptional. Loved the pasta, also. Date cake and cardamom ice cream stunning.
I made reservations for 10; 13 people showed up and they didn't miss a beat. The food was very good and the service solid. This is the 2nd time I had my birthday gathering here and it won't be my last.
The food was tasty, but the portions were miniscule.
New Heights showed up recommended on Chowhound, which I often consult before traveling. It was an easy walk from my hotel and very enjoyable. Everything was very well executed and the service was excellent.
Never disappointed going to New Heights! Rena and Ed
Whenever we're in DC we make the effort to check out New Heights and its wonderful collection of gins and tonics. We always enjoy the gin flights and the food. Also a nice place for business meals and conversation (not one of those super noisy places).
This restaurant was good, the service and food were good. They have an extensive gin list to make customized drinks, which was interesting.
Hadn't be to this old friend in quite a while. But the food had improved since our last visit, and as alway nice setting on 2nd floor overlooking park, tables well-spaced, noise level not ridiculous. The Gin Joint bar downstairs a great start to the evening, with interesting drinks, particularly their selection of 500 gins, and friendly bartenders. 4 course tasting menu a good deal. Only complaint was some slowness in the service, not in terms of time to get food once ordered, but to place order or to ask for something from our server, who seemed often hard to find.
Dine here often. Food is always wonderful. Service excellent. Quiet. Nice ambiance.
If you want to go to restaurant where you can have a quiet conversation with good friends, a delicious not rushed meal and professional service, the old New Heights is your place. I live in the city for more than 10 years and it is difficult to find a place like this. Loved it!
My friends and I had a lovely meal at New Heights. I had the grilled oysters- which were very flavorful. My friends really enjoyed the crab cake appetizer and the tomato salad. My entree was the branzino over black rice. The combination was fabulous and the branzino was perfectly cooked! My friends both had the scallops over risotto and could not stop raving about it. I wanted to try it but feared I might lose my hand if I attempted to remove a morsel from their plate. The real standout was the chocolate flourless cake. My friend has a severe gluten allergy so she was totally blown away by how light and moist this cake was! I love chocolate cake (with or without flour) and thought this was one of the best I had ever tasted. While this restaurant does not have a gluten-free menu, most of the dishes are actually gluten free. That made my friend very happy.
We are in the neighborhood but had not been in years (although we always liked the cooking). Tonight's meal was outstanding. We shared three small plates - including grilled oysters and fried green to tomatoes - each exceptional, as were the mains. Highly recommended.
Meal was good but portions were small I felt for the price.
We love New Heights and always celebrate our anniversary there because it was where we had our wedding dinner. The chef is accommodating and makes vegan meals for our two sons. The food is creative and delicious and the service is excellent.
Ordinarily, I would recommend this restaurant over and over, and in the past, I have. I have been going to this restaurant for 25 years, on and off, and have never had a bad experience until last Saturday evening. The restaurant was having air conditioning problems, and it was well over 90 degrees all day. It was stifling. No explanation or warning was given when we walked in. The kitchen was incredibly slow. The food was mediocre, and the entire experience was such that I don't think that I will return. Also, even though we complained about waiting 20 minutes for a cheese plate of 3 cheeses that never arrived, we weren't apologized to, compensated or made to feel like we mattered as patrons in anyway. The only bright spot in the evening was our server, who through no fault of her own tried to make the experience bearable. We couldn't wait to get out of there. The server told us that the backup in the kitchen was due to their expectation that business would be slow as it had been during the summer. However, it was very busy and the kitchen couldn't gear up to meet the demand. It was shameful for a restaurant of this claibre.
Quiet night. Great food and service. Real value for the price. Will definitely return.
Excellent food and atmosphere. Service was exceptional!
New Heights continues to be one of the best restaurants in Washington, DC. The food is outstanding, the dining area is exquisite, and the service is of the highest quality in town. A perfect dining experience.
Our waiter was attentive and the food delicious . I was surprised by all the empty tables.
Will definitely return to this restaurant
I have a friend who highly recommends this place and I've been there twice now and although it was a fine experience, I can't say I understand her enthusiasm. The food was good though when studying the menu, I couldn't find any dishes where I was interested in all the sides. The service was attentive though when the food came out the servers were clueless as to who got what and started placing the food without checking first (not a big deal, but seemed unusual since even casual restaurants have this worked out). Overall, it was a fine experience, but I wouldn't say I'd go rushing back.
New Heights is one of the best restaurants ever. We have been coming for 25+ years and always have a great experience.
Waiter with deep Knowledge about gins and wines. Drinks can be made to your liking.
The menu and atmosphere of New Heights is amazing. A friend and I had an absolutely wonderful meal. What I like the best is that you can have a conversation without having to shout--something that is hard to come by these days.
Very uneven experience. We were a large party of 8. We were seated for 15 minutes before we received menus, and we only got those after I flagged done a server and asked. We were 50/50 between like and dislike of the meal. The short ribs were good. Scallops, oysters, steak were not liked. Plating was strange with every plate, including dessert, having the exact same garnish. Service was also poor. Long wait between appetizers and entrees. There were multiple servers who came to our table, but no one seemed to be the overall lead. Difficulty getting our check at the end of the meal. Overall only a fair experience. I cannot recommend this restaurant.
As always, excellent and inventive food. We always enjoy being there.
We almost didn't go because a large party had the entire place booked early. But we're sure glad we waited. The service was impeccable and everything we ate was the best we'd had anywhere. From appetizers to wine to dessert and everything in between, this place was exquisite. We liked it so much we went back again two nights later. Same thing, PERFECT!!
We revisited New Heights after many years because our son lives just across the Calvert Street Bridge. He and his sister wanted us to celebrate Mother's Day as a family and were looking for suggestions. We recalled a previously wonderful dining experience at New Heights and thought it worth trying again. Our optimism was entirely justified. Everyone was rapturous about the quality of what they ordered. The portions were just right and the plating beautiful. New Heights is not inexpensive, but entirely justified. The service is attentive, exceptional, and doesn't hover. We were able to take our time and enjoy ourselves and each course as it arrived, was completed, and removed at the pace we chose. It was a delightful and memorable evening. Highly recommended for a special occasion.
Need to change reservations 4 different times, including the day of the event/business dinner. Over-the-top accommodating to meet our needs! Outstanding service and the scallop dish was amazing!
