New Heights Ratings and Reviews
This was my fourth or fifth time at New Heights over several years. I was disappointed in the service and the food reaction from our group was mixed. The salads were lettuce and a bit of dressing -- no color, no crunch. definitely need to rethink the salad. The oysters had a bad taste and didn't seem fresh--the person ate one and sent the rest back. the beef dishes were fine, cooked to the specified temperatures. so it's probably my last visit to New Heights. There are too many other great options in DC.
New Heights consistently provides good food with lots of choices, pleasant service, nice ambiance, quiet setting. We recently celebrated our daughter's birthday. She is on a restrictive diet allowing only small portions. She found lots of choices. Those of us who are hardier eaters also found ample dishes. We all had a great time.
Excellent menu selection which is not extensive but diverse. Dishes are very light but well seasoned with attention to detail in quality sourcing of ingredients and platings. The space is charming with a lovely pastoral view over the treetops of Rock Creek Park. I have been dining at New Heights for over 20 years and have always been delighted.
Very nice atmosphere and great menu. Also, the chef here is excellent. We enjoyed the soft shell crab, the fried oysters and the hamachi sashimi for appetizers and all were excellent. I thorougly enjoyed every bite of my scallops and my husband enjoyed his duck. It was not overcooked or dry.
Enjoyed the outdoor ambience in September, and every entree we tried was excellent and creative, although I think overpriced. The soft shell crab appetizer, however, was unexciting, dull flavor, and generally not up to expectations, especially at $15. Cordial, delightful service.
Four of us dined that evening. We ordered three appetizers and four main courses.
Only two of the appetizers came out instead of three. The server said he was not aware we had ordered three. It took a while for the kitchen to make up the third appetizer.
Only three of the main courses came out instead of four. The servicer had the kitchen make up the fourth main course. It did not come with rice as specified on the menu. Instead it came with Brussels sprouts. We surmise that it's quicker to microwave Brussels sprouts than it is to boil rice.
We did get a second round of drinks on the house. But the experience turned us off to the point that we will most likely not return.
A gem. Amazing that New Heights has been around for a quarter-century in a high-turnover business. Food was interesting and tasty (other than a rather dry blueberry and almond dessert); service was friendly and professional; wine recommendations very helpful...our server brought me three wines to taste and, sure enough, I went with the one that he originally recommended. My only wish is that there were more than one entree choice for vegetarians.
I was very impressed with New Heights. The cocktail - and especially the gin menu - options were extensive and interesting. The dining menu focuses on seasonal and regional ingredients and our selections were excellent (Branzino and duck) as was the dessert sampler. All in all a great meal at a very reasonable price. To top it off, the service was friendly, helpful, and personal without interrupting our conversation.
Excellent spot to which I will be returning often I think.
the dinner for 2 of us had something that was highly spicy and not advertised on the menu or warned about by the server.
The valet service is non-existent and when we left our car with a "valet" we did not get a ticket and he left our car running for the entire 3 hours we were in the restaurant.
I love New Heights! I dine there as often as I can. It is a sophistocated place to dine. The ambiance is relaxing and interesting. The cucumber mint cold soup was superb as was the branzino. We 3 shared dessert of a chocolate cup (I forget its name) and it was a perfect ending for dinner. Our window table gave us the pleasure of being "outside" without the heat and noise of the busy street. The drinks, especially from the terrific gin menu, are imaginative and delicious. The food is creative, beautifully presented, and delicious. The service (at least in the earlier dinner hour) is helpful and individualistic. [As the restaurant filled up, however, the service was less attentive. Perhaps it was understaffed the night we were there.]
I recently took my boyfriend to New Heights for his birthday. Everything we ordered was delicious. For an appetizer we split the fettuccine and the raw oysters, and both were delicious. I ordered the duck for an entree and was pleasantly surprised. It was prepared in a unique way, with more emphasis on the taste of the meat, rather than the skin. My boyfriend got the Sea Bass and was equally impressed. I told the restaurant we were celebrating my boyfriend's birthday so our dessert (Pain Perdu- again, delicious) came out on a plate with Happy Birthday spelled out in chocolate. I would highly recommend New Heights to anyone looking for a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion or have a nicer meal.
New Heights is a neighborhood gem! The extensive gin selection with house made tonics, seasonal cocktails can make a casual happy hour feel special. The seasonal additions to the menu and farm to table ingredients elevate their food. The service is wonderful. Everything I have ever had there is exceptionally delicious!
A lovely birthday celebration for my husband with our family of three and one GF. The ambiance is perfect for a relaxed, leisurely meal where one can converse without loud music or the din of other patrons' chatter. The menu is quite varied and suitable for all kinds of eaters. Side dishes of spinach risotto and shisito peppers delighted.
Cocktail list is tremendously varied and the the first floor bar has over 100 kinds of gin. My personal favorite is "That's My Train" made with gin, darjeeling tea, orange bitters, and moro amaro.
Perfect for a special occasion, a bar dinner alone, an upscale al fresco meal. I applaud the restaurant for continuing to deliver inventive cuisine for three decades. Bravo!
New Heights is a very good restaurant. I've eaten at the restaurant twice and both times have been quite good. The food is very good, well prepared, and nicely presented. Service is also quite nice. The restaurant is elegant but also comfortable and relaxed. The main dining room is on the 2nd floor on Calvert street, with views onto the street. A very nice ambiance overall. Will definitely visit this restaurant again.
The food was great and the atmosphere lovely. And the location was right for us, right across from my conference hotel. However, the service was so slow that, even allowing 90 minutes for dinner, I still didn't receive my entree before I had to return to my conference. It's a shame to have to eat the entree from a $120 dinner cold in a styrofoam takeout carton.
We ate upstairs at the Restaurant (not downstairs or outside, which are lively and noisy). This is a great restaurant for adults who wish to have a quiet and lovely ambiance so conversation can take place. The food is creative and outstanding. The service is excellent and not intrusive. Wait staff is extremely knowledgeable about the food and especially the extensive assortment of amazing gins and tonics. We have returned here again and again because it is so comfortable and elegant.
We first visited New Heights 7 years ago following a colleague's recommendation. We have been back several times every year since then whenever we are in DC. The food has always been excellent, the service impeccable and the wine list interresting and rewarding. We will keep going back.
