Nellie’s is not a restaurant; it is an experience. Find out what the excitement is all about!
Saturday - Sunday: 9:00am - 3:00pm
Very good brunch buffet complete with the best flan I have ever had. I tried a Puerto Rican lasagna with plantains rather than noodles, which was new to me. The buffet also included fresh fruit, coconut oatmeal, Puerto Rican rice and beans, pancakes, French toast, breakfast potatoes, sausage, bacon, toast, chicken, OJ, coffee, and a made to order omelet station. The servers were very nice, along with the chef. Only issue was our plates were never cleared even after we got a second round of food with new plates, so we dined with dirty plates on the table the rest of the meal. Our assigned server was busy with a larger group, and as a result we were often attended to by other staff members who we summoned instead.
I do not understand the positive reviews for this place. The food is barely okay -- we had a la carte breakfast items, not the buffet, and not the traditional Puerto Rican fare. The service is ridiculously slow (we waited almost an hour for eggs and pancakes). The patio space is okay, but the inside is dark, cramped, and not particularly clean. The restroom is a nightmare. This city has many good/great brunch options, but Nellie's is not one of them.
Very comfortable place serving tasty and well-prepared food from a broad menu at very reasonable prices.
I love this place! As a Puerto Rican born and raised in Humboldt Park, it’s always nice to have high quality authentic Puerto Rican food. The jibarito sandwiches and shrimp monfogo are by absolute favorite dishes and I highly recommend them. You are guaranteed to be full from whatever you order!
It took a good 20 minutes just to have our waiter take our order and get ONE cup of coffee because I reminded a different server that we were waiting on our coffee. It took 45 minutes just to get 3 jibarito orders out. We never saw our waiter unless we called for him. Everyone was grabbing from the buffet, so I guess we missed the memo and just ordered something off the menu. When I called the waiter to ask where our food was, he came out 5 minutes later with the food and I asked if there was a reason it took so long and he explained that they take care of the orders as they come in. I looked around and was perplexed since there were barely any customers in the restaurant that had ordered off the menu. No apologies or anything. The plantain for the jibarito was soggy. Nothing special but it was the homemade feel. The rice was good and not greasy. Overall, the food was good, but definitely not worth the wait.
The bill was the only thing that was given to us pretty quickly and I’m sure that’s because the waiter could tell I was annoyed. He gave us a $6 discount for “the trouble”
I’d also like to mention that there were 8 other waiters just standing around the counter NOT DOING ANYTHING. You couldn’t flag any of them down because they were just fixated on the register or talking to one another.
I didn’t catch his name, but there was one waiter who was kind enough to check on our order and checked on us after we got our meal. Our own server didn’t even do that...
I will not be back nor recommend this restaurant to anyone unless you love to wait almost an hour for a sandwich and rice
Authentic food, super friendly staff and the weekend buffet is an absolute steal
Excellent, True Puerto Rican Food!!!
I love the relaxed atmosphere. Its like going to eat at your favorite aunt's after church. The coffee is strong and good. Best thing is the charming gentleman that operates the omelet station- very polite and engaging as well as efficient. Its the kind of place you go to when you miss home.
The food at Nellie’s is outstanding! Best Puertorican brunch in Chicago. I always feel like I am back at my grandma’s house. The service is great and it’s a kid friendly place.
This place is a great family run restaurant ! The food is amazing, the selection of Puertorican food is good and the flavors are on point with what you would find on the island
Entrance door could use more color too it
Brunch buffet was okay food looked like it was there for hours, PR lasagna was cold and salty, sausage links looked burnt, bacon wasn't fully cooked, potatoes could have been seasoned, coconut oatmeal was okay could have had some coconut bites to it, rice needed to be more moist, fried pork was kinda cold, maduros were okay some were still raw inside, french toast and pancakes should be done as ordered not in advance they were dry. The ONLY thing I liked was the omelettes and flan unlimited OJ & cafe serviced at your table.
Table I sat down on was tilted and didn't fix, where the buffet was at was dark could use more lighting.
Our group of 10 enjoyed weekend brunch this past Sunday: Avena de Coco (Coconut Oatmeal) was tasty & hearty start, then terrific buffet stations with fresh & hot Pastelón de Huevo (Puerto Rican style lasagna!), Salchichas (sausages) & bacon, potato wedges, sweet plantains, pancakes, etc. The made-to-order omelettes were great. We reserved tables in advance because of size of our group, and Nellie's was ready for us with great service. Very reasonably priced!
As always, Nellie's is delicious and full of friendly service. They are so sweet to my daughter. I always look forward to coming here.
Easter buffet Brunch!
Great selection of food and good ambiance
My family and I met there for Easter brunch. We were able to make a reservation, so there was no waiting. The main dining room was full, and at first, we thought there would be a wait, however, they let us to an very open, and airy room on the second floor. The room looked like a special events room, and the music was was so lively, I danced with my three year old granddaughter! The food was excellent, and they were even able to accommodate my granddaughters numerous allergies. We took advantage of the buffet with a delightful Caribbean lasagna, where the noodles were replaced by plantains, between the meat and cheese!
I’ve been here several times and just wanted to finally leave a review. I’m big on customer service and this restaurant makes me feel welcomed. It’s inviting the people are very friendly and the food is authentic and amazing. I visit often for their Sunday Brunch. And I can’t get enough of it. I love that I can byob. And just have a good laugh with family and friends when we get together.
Amazing food and friendly staff
I came here with my daughter and girlfriend for brunch. I had already visited Nellie's before but I love this place. The food is amazing and delicious. The staff is always friendly and the atmosphere was as if you were visiting a cafe in Puerto Rico. Always a delight eating here.
Great bargain $16 or $17 for the the buffet and it’s BYOB!!!! Only thing I would ask for the waiter or waitress to come around and make sure my coffee is filled it takes away from the great bargain when you can’t get your caffeine. Other than that great place.
This was out first time at Nellie’s. He food was flavorful and a nice deviation from standard breakfast options.
It was very delicious and I loved the Sunday Brunch, BYOB all you can eat !!
Because it sucked. The food was crap. The ambiance was horrible.
Great food, excellent service and good value on the weekend brunch buffet. Do not pass up a serving of coconut oatmeal or you may regret it. BTW, coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice is added bonus.
Loved everything about it. Picked this place for a different experience.. I am so glad I did ...I love trying new thing... I am from out of town .
The staff was very friendly and attentive. The brunch buffet was excellent. Everyone needs to try the cinnamon oatmeal! I really liked the fact that the chef was there to make ALL eggs and omelets to order - no mountains of scrambled eggs that have been sitting out for who knows how long. I would absolutely make brunch at Nellie's a regular weekend event.
I was meeting a friend for brunch early Sunday morning. Division St was blocked off due to a festival, so we had to walk about 4 blocks in order to park. We had made a reservation and called to inform the host that we would be late due to parking. Normally, there is parking on Division St.
The staff at Nellie's was very friendly and accommodating. It's BYOB, so we bought a bottle of Champagne with us. The waitress opened the bottle, brought glasses, and put the bottle on ice. I was quite impressed. There was no corkage fee either. I've paid corkage fees and had to ask several times for an ice bucket.
We had the buffet. The best item was the omelette bar. I ordered an egg white veggie omelette and my friend ordered a regular veggie. They were the best omelettes that we had ever had. The cook was very friendly and even suggested that we come back for a second one.
The second best item was the flan. It was creamy and light. It was cut into very small pieces, so I didn't feel so guilty after the full plate from the buffet. My friend would argue that it was the Puerto Rican oatmeal. However, I passed as I don't like coconut.
The price of the buffet was also very reasonable. $16 per adult.
Great experience good food and service. I will come again
Nellie's is a great neighborhood joint. The atmosphere is nothing fancy, but the food is phenomenal and the service is friendly and attentive. It was advertised as a great place for brunch, but note there isn't a buffet. The food was delicious -- the coconut oatmeal is especially tasty and surprisingly filling. Overall, it's a very pleasant experience with great food.
Everything was delicious. The coconut oatmeal was amazing! Very intimate and authentic spot.
More spacious on the inside than I thought it would be. I really enjoyed the weekend brunch buffet and service and quick and polite.
The food, service and value (check out their amazingly affordable prices) at Nellie' s were fantastic! The place is refreshingly unpretentious and most pleasurable. My partner and I had never been before but we will be back for the coconut oatmeal and the Puerto Rico lasagna. The chef who prepared our made-to-order omelets was extremely helpful and pleasant in explaining all of the unique items that were available. None of the food was spicy but I loved the fact that you could add some hot sauce as desired. There were 3-4 different hot sauces on every table and I preferred what appeared to be Nellie's own creation. I highly recommend Nellie's for anyone seeking an ethnic and enjoyable dining experience!!!
Mothers Day brunch staff was poorly trained. We were never greeted and never got drink orders taken. No one asked if we needed anything, but of course 20% gratuity was added to our tab of 9 people. I could tell the omelet cook was being overworked because line was so long, the rest of the plate got cold waiting for it, but I have no idea who got that $60 gratuity because no one served or helped us.
Cindy the owner came by and made us all feel so welcome. The brunch was bomb. The pastelon was soooo good
