Chef Jared Van Camp has crafted an obsessively house-made and locally focused bill of fare. While taking influence from Italy, Spain and France, the ingredients and products are sourced exclusively from the Midwest.

The design is inspired by Villa Nellcôte, the French chateau where the Rolling Stones recorded “Exile on Main Street” in the 1970s. Between recording sessions (and bouts of debauchery), the band and their famous friends would gather over hours-long meals prepared by a chef who sourced each day’s ingredients from the local markets.

Like its namesake chateau, Nellcôte is opulent and approachable, a neighborhood restaurant wrapped in high-energy elegance. It’s where friends convene over food and drinks prepared with fresh, seasonal, house-made ingredients — including hand-milled flour — in a setting that feels special. All accompanied by a killer background soundtrack.

Dinner was amazing. This is my new favorite italian restaurant. I’m also vegan and my server Barbara was so helpful and nice she definitely made our experience great. Will definitely be coming back a lot.

It was a really unfortunate dining experience, especially because I had been so excited to try Nellcote. The service was terrible. Our waitress was uneducated about the wine selection and then she never asked if enjoyed our dishes. I barely touched the one pasta dish because it was terribly sweet. We had polished the other dishes and she saw the plate with the sweet pasta was completely full and didn't ask if I enjoyed it. Clearly we would have preferred a refund or to try something else. Also, the entire dinner they were setting up a for the Saturday night DJ which was completely distracting and noisy and completely deterred from our date night. Overall our experience was unfortunate and we definitely wouldn't recommend to any of our friends.

Food was good - interesting preparation but not totally crazy tastes. Service was sub-par however. Our waiter (and most of the wait staff) was nowhere to be found for 10 minutes while we were looking for another drink.

Waited 15+ minutes to be greeted by the server. During this time, thankfully, the host stopped by our table several times to make sure we were settled as we waited . When the server finally arrived she didn’t apologize for the delay, especially after walking pass our table several times with no acknowledgement that we were seated. A simple, “I’ll be with you in a moment” would have been courteous. The food and drinks were great as expected but basic customer service was poor from the server. Luckily the restaurant has great hosts and table staff which saved the experience.

The food was good. The service was very poor and I felt we were being rushed all the time. I would not recommend the restaurant to anyone looking for a nice dining experience. Probably eating at the bar could be OK.

Overpriced food. Some of which was just downright unpleasant tasting - like the short rib goulash pasta.
A ridiculous wine list. Only seven bottles each of red and white and the cheapest bottle was over $50. I hate it when restaurants do this. Wines by the glass for 12 or $13. That is ridiculous. You can buy full bottles of most of those wines in the grocery store for that price. Draft beer was eight dollars .

The chocolate mousse dessert was not good either. You could feel the sugar crunching and your teeth.

It is definitely more than $30 or person.

Overall experience was a little awkward. They sat us down next to the window and it was pretty breezy, we asked if we could move to another table but they told us they had all reservations. The food was a little bit off. It almost tasted moldy. The only thing I must admit that the salmon was amazing it was perfectly cooked.

I would rather go for dinner. With so many other brunch options they are average. I had the breakfast sandwich it was tasty so it fulfilled my hunger but nothing spectacular. The eggs were prepared omelet style on a bun, a bit too much cheese and too much egg for a sandwich. Coffee was average to not great. The service was ok, not attentive nor provided recommendations. Many other and better brunch options.

Nellcote is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago, and this is why we do keep coming back. I do wish their service would be just a bit better.

A restaurant week adventure. My wife and I went on a date night here and overall it was really good. The food was outstanding. We shared the bread plate which had 3 distinct types of bread and 2 butters it was warm fresh and delicious. We shared the beet carpacio and the hamachi crudo and both were outstanding. All the elements worked perfectly in the beet dish with perfect balance of flavors. The hamachi was super fresh but the elements of the dish were a bit confused. It seemed like they were trying too hard to make it overly fancy. As an entree we both had the salmon which was excellent. It was a hair overcooked (medium vs. mid-rare) but that is just nitpicking. The sides and sauces worked. We ordered the sherry time carrots as a side which were delicious. They were the perfect texture that is hard to achieve. For desert my wife had the gelato and I had the pecan pie. Again great. The food gets a solid 5. The service is what lost the star. It was very weak. It was 8 PM on a Saturday night and the restaurant appeared to be at about 80% capacity. Drinks took an extremely long time. The waiter was MIA for much of the meal and the waiter actually forgot to order the carrots to the kitchen. We thought they would come soon after our entrees. We didn't see our waiter again for 10 minutes after. When we asked about them he noted his mistake finished with another table then put our order in. It was another 10 minutes before the dish made it to us after we were done with our entree. Logically this should have been comped but it was not. Overall it was an OK experience but for $75-100 per person, I expect much better service.

We visited Nellcote during Chicago Restaurant Week, and thus did not try the full menu. My meal began with an excellent Negroni cocktail; my husband's with a glass of rosé. Starters were excellent; my husband enjoyed his beet carpaccio salad, and I enjoyed the antipasto salad. Things went a bit downhill with the entree, however. While my husband enjoyed his Skuna Bay Salmon, my Amish Chicken arrived lukewarm, and on the edge of underdone. We both ordered the chocolate-hazelnut mousse for dessert. There was supposed to be chocolate gelato on top. My husband's gelato arrived more or less frozen, with a raspberry; mine was half-melted and raspberry-free. We rarely order desserts, though, so this one was a treat nonetheless.

I should mention that dinner at Nellcote exposes you to noise levels not usually found outside gay bars; it's a mostly 80's mix, but it will leave you yelling at your dinner partner. Tables are close together, and ours, on a balcony overlooking the main dining room, was cramped. Service was inconsistent. While our waitress was a pro, there was no silverware on the table for me when I sat down, and when my entree was placed on the table, there was again a wait of about a minute before I had utensils to eat it with. There was also no offer of a refill on coffee, just the presentation of the check.

All in all, I can't get that enthusiastic about Nellcote. Our evening was a series of slip-ups—minor ones, but slip-ups nonetheless. While the Chicago Restaurant Week menu was certainly a good value, there are better Italian restaurants closer to my home.

Loved the atmosphere - so classy and quaint. Our waiter messed up our order once and ended up giving us free chambongs to make up for it. Loved the touch!

Great overall but unfortunately, the service was very slow. It was restaurant week, but it wasn’t crowded and was a week day night. Staff was very apologetic about the wait, but it was still a bummer and dinner for 4 took 3 hours (we all ordered off the pre-set menu quickly after being seated). They apparently share a kitchen with another restaurant that was busier (that was the answer we got!). Cool restaurant, good food and good area - just not sure how quickly I will be back based on the wait time but would consider it.

Food was delicious and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. We went in on a Sunday evening in January and it didn't seem like the heat was really on. The restaurant was very cold - half my table left their winter jackets on. The timing of bringing out the food wasn't great either. Our apps came out right away but our dinner didn't arrive until an hour later.
