About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Vegetarian-friendly
  • Neighborhood gem

Neecha Thai Cuisine was established in 1988 at the corner of Sutter and Steiner in San Francisco. Neecha’s mother, Saranya, designed a large menu based on her unique Thai-Chinese-Isaan background. Half of the menu was dedicated to vegetarian offerings that Neecha’s vegetarian grandmother had once enjoyed.

Now, over a quarter of a century later, Neecha Thai in Oakland is a blend of three generations of delicious Thai cuisine. From favorites at our flagship restaurant to creative new dishes, we offer rice and noodle dishes with an emphasis on balance, flavor, and health. Most dishes come with vegetables or salad and a slice of fruit to round out your meal, and we also offer white jasmine rice, brown rice, sticky rice, and quinoa.

Our produce is purchased fresh daily and we do not use flavor additives like MSG. When you dine with us, you can count on a fresh and flavorful meal!

I'm giving Neecha Thai 4 stars mainly for the food. Fine dining it's not, but it's very tasty. It's a rather small space, a bit crowded, with a fair amount of noise from the open kitchen. Wait staff was friendly, but "inexperienced college student" level. Service could be more "professional" i.e. attentive. My friend arrived before I did and while water and menus were on the table, we had to ask them to come take our order. We had been seated for some time, and I had even checked in for our reservation 5 minutes early. The food arrived in a timely manner from there; we had an appetizer on spinach leaves with a delightful chutney that tasted of ginger and maybe tamarind? My friend had the Basil Chicken and I had a salmon dish. Both had delicious sauces and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. My salmon was a bit overcooked and dry, so good thing there was plenty of peanut curry sauce to spoon on top. We split a chocolate "lava cake" with ice cream for dessert, since it was my friend's birthday, and they accommodated a request for a birthday candle. But it was slightly over cooked and more fudge-y than lava-y. My friend said she saw it heated in the microwave. Lava cake should always be baked to order as overcooking is very easy to do, especially in the microwave, where things cook from the inside out. Overall, however, I would consider it a great neighborhood place to get some tasty food with friendly service, and good sized portions. We were happy to have leftovers to take home for lunch the next day.

Love the diverse menu. Small and quaint. Conveniently located. Within walking distance to Lake Merritt and shopping.

Bad experience. We made a reservation for 9:45 and when we arrived they said they don’t take reservations past 9:15. ??? When I suggested she update her Open Table profile to remove those time slots, she was not at all interested. Why have the ability to reserve a time if the restaurant is closed? We traveled a good 20 min through Oakland just to be turned away.

The food is always fresh and delicious. Garlic prawns, string beans with cashews, salads, curry puffs, and noodle dishes are some of our favorites. Servers are attentive and make sure every dish is to your liking. We spent Valentines Day here and was touched by the candles and flowers. We each got a rose at the end of the meal. It’s definitely one of our favorite Thai restaurants.
