When you pull open the tall, ancient doors, curtained in a blood red fabric, you open the passage way to a strange and mixed feeling of warmth and welcome. You can tell the work that went into this beautiful and historic building was wrought by the hands of people who love what they do, and care about those who enter.
So with 32 varieties from across the globe occupying our drafts and bottles, we must have damn near achieved Utopia. From local legends like Yards and Victory to exotic imports like Hitachino and Newcastle Brown, our beer selection will satiate any palate. So stop by, soak in the warm and inviting atmosphere, listen to some unique music and put down a few with old friends, new friends, or slightly slurring strangers. Cheers!
Great place in the Independence Hall area. Great food, beer and overall experience. Kid-friendly as well, which was a plus for our nine year old daughter.
I was rather disappointed with my recent meal at National Mechanics. The sandwich I ordered was a bit skimpy on the filling, pork, and the pork was very fatty. I had to spit out several big clumps of fat. My dining partner's salad was passable. The fries were the best part. Overall, not worth the $14 tab for each. I'd stick to drinks there.
We visited for brunch right at opening. The Eggs Benedict were perfect, as were the home fries. Service was outstanding as the restaurant is set up in a beautiful building. I highly recommend this place.
Cool place for a burger and a drink. Doesn't appear to be ADA accessible. Would definitely come back.
New Year’s Eve dinner
Found National Mechanics by chance and so glad we did. We had a wonderful server, Meghan, who made our dining experience extra special. Enjoyed rib eye steak cheese steaks, and one of the best veggie burgers EVER! Added a large warm fresh pretzel with cheese sauce and zesty mustard to share. Really enjoyed make your own Bloody Mary bar and the 'beermimosas' :) will go back :)
Great food, fun atmosphere and fantastic house specialties from the bar! Don't go to sleep on NM!
National Mechanics is such a unique place! We enjoyed our food but even better, we really liked our server, RJ. He was attentive and friendly, even providing us with directions and suggestions since we are not from Philly.
Definitely a loud place. I was in town for the marathon and dropped in to warm up and get a quick bite. We ended up staying longer because it was harder to find a place with a big enough table for us all. Some of the apps were better than others. It was hard to find things for someone with celiac on the menu other than one soup. It was really loud. Our waiter was a bit rude and standoffish. The bar was also chock full of stereotypical Eagles fans heckling and telling off a family from Seattle with Seahawks gear on. Food wasn't bad, decent value, but probably won't go back.
Best Bloody Mary I’ve had in a while that wasn’t my own
Every employee I encountered was pleasant, how refreshing! I had the veggie burger. I had read I'm other reviews how delicious it was and they were right
I also really enjoyed the Bloody Mary bar.
Great food, great service, value for my money. See ya again N. M.
We expected to really like this little joint based on Google ratings. The atmosphere is pub style which is appropriate for Philly, but it didn't feel well kept up. The signature cocktails were odd and not very enticing though I did try a seasonal take on a Moscow Mule. It was just ok. The remainder of the menu was limited but appeared as though you'd be able to satisfy most appetites. My husband's cheesesteak was unimpressive. He said it tasted just OK. I however was thrilled with my roasted beet salad. It was so loud we could barely hold a conversation. We didn't even want to stay for another drink or desert. Our server was energetic and pleasant even though he didn't really know the accurate information about the intriguing faces on our glasses (I had Edgar Allen Poe, he claimed he was born around the corner and spent most his life in Philly - wrong). It was just an OK experience but we both agreed we would NOT return to National Mechanics, nor would I recommend it.
Halloween night visit enjoying drinks and food. Great service and unpretentious historical ambience. Ideal location to access sites downtown.
The building inside and out is eclectic. There are stained glass windows, wooden tables, and church pews. There is a long bar and high chair tables. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable of the items on the menu and the specials. I tried the special cocktail and had a second, it was so good. The food was delicious and came quickly and hot. We highlighted recommend National Mechanics.
Great wait staff and amazing food. Love this place.
Server was abrupt and at times rude. She would say inappropriate things to us. It made the whole dining experience unpleasant. The veggie burgers were excellent but we would not come back because of the service.
We met up with family from out of town who were staying at a hotel nearby. Very conveniently located and easy to find. We were seated promptly and service was informed and attentive. Varied menu, with generous portions and everything prepared so well! Everyone enjoyed their meals, especially the pork sandwich (husband said best he’d ever had), brisket and ribs. Only negative was the noise level, which fortunately toned down once the happy hour crowd left.
Good. And good services
First, the stairs are steep and very difficult to get up for me who uses a cane. They are not handicap accessible. But that is the least of the problems. We sat down to 3 flies buzzing around the table. The window sills have plants that need to be thrown out. There is some sort of container with a plant or mold in it that is so unappealing to look at when you are eating.
We ordered beers and sahe brought over glasses that were dirty. She came back and the new glasses were still dirty. We Drank from the bottles. The waitress started to take my order and said she would be back. We watched her and she went to two other tables to take orders. It was not even busy. At that point we should have left.Ordered a pretzel -$10 not worth it. Had guacamole and chips. The guac had no flavor. Was avocado mashed up and put in a small bowl. The fish tacos had little fish and too much cabbage and sauce. The chicken wings were good.
Will not be back
Poor wait staff. Waitress was nice but not attentive during our meal. Disappeared for awhile.
Food was Okay, nothing to write home about.
Beer selection okay. They were out of the beer we wanted.
Veggie burger is very good
Really good food - veggie salad and brisket were terrific. Kids enjoyed their kid meals. Nice beer selection.
Great food. Everything was delicious. Great service. 2nd time in philly for us and our 2nd time here, favorite restaurant we have visited here.
Ave eten here several times and usually had good value for the money. The beer was flat and he ribs consisted of 4 ribs. I have never seen such a small portion. The price was $22 which is the normal price for a half rack which is 6 or 7 ribs. Will not be going back
Food was just ok! Nothing special. Expected more based on reviews. Wish there was a a pad on the church pews.
The service and food were great! Thank you!
My boyfriend and I came here on a date and loved it. Our waiter was so friendly, the atmosphere was awesome, and the food was delicious. I had one of the best veggie burgers I’ve ever eaten. We made a reservation beforehand and they gave us an intimate window seat - so unexpected and so lovely! Will definitely be coming here again!
Love this place, we have been a couple times now and always order several things. You absolutely have to get the pretzel! Great Mac and cheese, solid burgers, good cocktails. I love the vibe of the restaurant too
Loved the food. Our waitress was great. Would definitely return.
It was wonderful!! I had the mimosa and eggs with salmon. Delicious!!
Amazing food, drinks, and service. Always a good time.
Food was good. Prices are very good. Loved the repurposed bank. The ambiance is great.
First of all, National Mechanics makes the best Bloody Mary's in the whole city. So if you like blood mary's, I recommend that you go get yourself one here. Go for brunch and they'll have an entire Bloody Mary bar set up for you to make and customize your own. It is a religious experience.
And also, if you don't go for brunch and still want one, Sarrah the bartender is a Bloody Mary making prodigy.
But regardless of all that, if you couldnt already tell by all of the positive reviews other people have left about this place, the food, drinks, service, and atmosphere are all perfect.
Everything was great. Food was good and our waitress was fantastic . Great beer selection.
Enjoyed the restaurant. Neat setting in an old bank, and fun decor. Food and service were very good. Only complaint is that it’s very noisy. We are 60-ish and were easily twice as old as anyone else there.
Great place to stop for lunch! I had the fish and chips and the wife had a chicken Caesar salad. Both were delicious! Service was quick and courteous.
Reservation was a Saturday night at 8 pm. They "ran out" of several items on the food and drink menu. We all ended up ordering skirt steak cooked to different levels of doneness. All arrive cooked the same. Waited a long time for the entrees, like 30-40 minutes although the place was only moderately filled. I wasnt impressed at all. Average. But i wouldnt return.
Great spot! We went for brunch on a Saturday morning and got excellent service. Awesome food that they adapted to a patron’s needs. As an added bonus, the decor is super cute, too. Give it a chance—you won’t be disappointed!
We had a great time! The brunch food was so yummy!
Great Bloody Mary bar! Lots of options and servers were awesome! Food and ambiance were cool. Restaurant has a cool vibe and highly recommend
