Nakato Japanese Restaurant - Sushi Bar and Traditional Dining Ratings and Reviews
I haven't had sukiyaki in years, and it has always been a personal favorite. I was excited when I saw that they serve it at Nakato. They bring a hot plate and cook it at your table--like hot pot, but with the special sukiyaki sauce. We had three people, and that was perfect. Two would be too much food, and four too little. Food was great and the service was notably good.
Just to give a little heads up on regarding my review. I spent 5 years in Japan as an exchange student in Fukuoka. Consequently, when I reserve the table at the traditional Japanese family ran restaurant I am expecting certain things. Polite, friendly, knowledgeable service and quite ambiance. Service was good, but with luck of knowledge. Servers have to know the menu!!!! It took me about 30 min to order a proper bottle of sake, until the other stuff member (I assume a bartender) helped her out. We ordered shabu-shabu, beef tataki, rolls, and some of the a la carte nigiris. Everything but the roll was good not excellent.
I won't recomend this place for a date since it is quite loud. As a casual dinning...may be. But keep in mind that it is not cheap. Our check for 2 adults an 1 child ended almost $300 with the tip. For this kind of money do to UMI.
We have been going to Nakato for years, although we don't get there very often. It's always great. The last few times, we went to the hibachi grill part. This time we ate in the regular restaurant and it was excellent. We all loved what we ate. And the service was outstanding.
Our server, Zi Kay, was fantastic. Super friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgable about all the food on the menu. The Kiss of Death sushi roles were some of the best sushi I had tasted and we ended up ordering another after finishing the first. Food was expensive, but was expected for quality of the food.
My husband and I had our 7th wedding anniversary dinner at Nakato's last week. As always, the food was, for the most part, superb. Highlights include the grilled eggplant in miso, which is simply divine - we had two servings and savored every mouthful - and the goma-ae, which is delicious. We also tried the soba salad for the first time, which was very satisfying - although it was a bit frustrating that it was loaded with finely sliced red onion, which was not mentioned on the menu, and that I then had to painstakingly remove before eating. I eat mostly vegetarian, so we appreciated the waitress warning us that the agedashi tofu included fish stock. We also had the vegetable tempura. Although Nakato's is the best tempura I've had in the US outside of San Francisco, it is still not wonderful: the batter is too thick, it is not light and crisp enough. However, the tempura mushroom was wonderfully flavorful, so a worthwhile compensation, and it is good to at least get some tempura that I can bear to eat (I can't bear it anywhere else I've tried it in Atlanta). One other disappointment was that - although they very helpfully made me a simple cucumber nori roll, which was not in the menu (they had zero vegan sushi and no vegetarian nori roll on the menu), it was so loaded with wasabi that it was unpleasant to eat - that is not a mistake I expected at Nakato. For dessert, we tried the red bean and the ginger icecream. The red bean was not so exciting, but the ginger icecream was lovely, and I'd definitely have it again. The service was absolutely top-notch, as always. I dropped off to 4 stars for ambiance only because my chair had crumbs on it before I sat down, I had to brush them off. I don't expect that at a restaurant as nice as Nakato's has always been in my past experience. It would be good if they could watch for that in the future. But it is still an excellent service experience, all round.
We sat at the dining area so this review is not about the Hibachi grill; however, the wait for Hibachi was extremely long and I want to go back and try it. The restaurant was very nice and the customer service was excellent! It was a little cold in the restaurant and they turned up the heat so we did not freeze. Their menu has a great selection and they have a "value" menu where the price is extremely reasonable for the amount of food you receive. I would highly recommend this place to others.
For my birthday, my father treated me to dinner at Nakato. This was my first visit after many years. . . and it was just as delicious as I remembered.
Nakato offers full-service dining, a sushi bar, hibachi and traditional dining options along with a small bar. On this particular evening, the restaurant seemed fairly busy, especially the hibachi section. We were seated at a table and, after enjoying sashimi and edamame appetizers, our order of a variety of rolls arrived. The order included the Crunch Roll as well as eel and tuna options. Each was tasty and well-prepared. We finished our meal with a serving of rich chocolate cake.
My only complaint pertains to the valet service. When we arrived, the valets were quick to park our cars and tell us how to request it upon finishing our meal. As we were leaving, however, it took what seemed like an unnecessarily long time to retrieve the car. Several customers were leaving at once and there seemed to be some confusion. However, after an extended wait, our car arrived and we departed.
