Nakama Sushi - San Francisco
Wonderful experience at Nakama Sushi, the service was excellent and friendly but the sushi is the real star here and it is amazing. We were a party of four and shared everything from the oysters to Dragon Roll and my favorite, the 49er roll which was truly outstanding. Would definitely return for more!
Great selections for courses. Excellent service. Will return again!
Fabulous food good service. Impossible to find somewhere in London (where I’m from) this good at twice the price!
One of the best Dragon Rolls I've ever had
The food was delicious but unfortunately only a single fish was available as wild caught and everything else was farmed. For someone who chooses not to eat farmed fish that is a severe limitation.
Before dining at Nakama, we decided to read all the reviews appearing in three of the major social media and restaurant sites where San Francisco diners tend to post their impressions.
The gist of the reviews seemed to center around two general opinions: (1) the first part of the menu, containing appetizers and tapas had some superb choices; (2) the second part, containing the nigiri and sashimi offerings, did not receive as many accolades, possibly related to the fact that much of the raw fish is shipped to Nakama from far away Japan.
Unlike some of the critical reviews we read, mostly from the early months of this restaurant, we found the service at Nakama to be excellent. We informed our server that we had an 8 PM concert to attend and she made sure that the chef kept our multiple courses arriving in a timely fashion.
Our only service complaint is that we requested miso soup to start but, just as we read in two other reviews, the miso soup never arrived. That said, we were charged for it!
Based on the accolades of prior reviewers, here is what we ordered to build our own personalized tasting menu: grilled live scallop, vegetable gyoza, sake steam clams, Gindara miso black cod, ½ dozen oysters, and eggplant on a skewer. Every one of these plates was superb. Thank you fellow Nakama reviewers!
We also ordered 1 Hamachi nigiri and 1 Hamachi sashimi. It should be noted that you only get ONE nigiri or sashimi per order, not two like you often receive at other sushi restaurants. My dining companion said his Hamachi nigiri tasted OK to him. My Hamachi sashimi had a bit of a stippled, mealy feeling on my tongue, as if it had been frozen, thawed, and frozen again. So, once again, I found the gestalt of previous reviewers of Nakama to be right on.
Nakama offers only two desserts currently: green tea ice cream and green tea cheesecake. We ordered one of each. They were OK but nothing special.
We'd consider returning to Nakama but would go elsewhere for nigiri and sashimi.
had the omakase and it is a wowser. Best bite was uni on tofu, so yummy. They timed it perfectly for us to make a show on time. Sake service was very inventive. Cannot wait for the next opportunity to eat here.
Was an awesome birthday omakase experience. The candle at the end took me by surprise. But the A5 Wagyu with Uni was the best piece but overall all the fish and other dishes blended well together.
The sushi selection was excellent!
Love this place! Very friendly staff, and quality fish.
We got the omakase tasting menu, which was incredible. It takes you through a wide variety of Japanese dishes and tastes along the way. The meal was very expensive and the ambiance could have used more than radio pop music, but the waiters and waitresses made up for the ambiance.
Insanely delicious! We had no idea this place was here and it rivaled our favorite sushi restaurant in the city.
Must go with several people to order more items. We waited a long time and got 3 of four small items we ordered. The man who came much later and sat next to us got several things in a very short time.
10-piece Nigiri Sampler with uni, monk fish and black cod appetizers were very very flavorful...service was attentive, personal and quick...overall an exceptional dining experience!
Tip: The chef will put just enough shoyu (soy sauce) on each nigiri that he thinks appropriate. So don't automatically douse it!
great place but strange service, they messed up the bill, we were served cheesecake while still eating miso soup....
Great quality fish and the chefs are very friendly!
Had 10 different plates and it’s good Japanese food. They have good portion amounts and the fish is good quality.
Dos thumbs up 👍🏼👍🏼
Great service, we started with a few items, and then selected a few items as we were finishing the previous items. Great to sample different foods and not having to order all at once! Very quick service and great staff!
Food was off the charts good.
Great fish! Enthusiastic but uncoordinated and flustered service. Serious need for sound-dampening on the ceiling. But really good fish.
Omakase is a great deal and a lot of food. Great meal.
Good food, great service! We will be back!
Everything was great except they didn’t serve alcohol
Great overall dining experience! Sushi was fantastic!
Excellent fresh, flavor-full sushi.
Excellent very attentive service. They start by giving you a warm towel to wash your hands.
It became a bit noisy at times, but overall, our experience was very good and we will come back.
One of the best and affordable omakase restaurants in San Francisco that provides a delicious and outstanding experience to those who have never had omakase or who desire it. The staff is extremely friendly and the chefs are welcoming and will guide and recommend you only the best!
Decent sushi with horribly slow service; the waitstaff were continuously unning around, clearly feeling the pressure. Not very impressive.
Looks like the restaurant is still experiencing growing pains... would revisit in a few months to see if the service is better. They also don't have a liquor license, so if I came back I would definitely check on that!
Food and service were outstanding. We will definitely go for lunch again.
Great omakase place near ballet, not as good as Wakuriya, but similar style. Super delicious and satisfying, a great value.
Ok sushi for ok/high price
Nakama Sushi offers a pretty great $98 omakase. The chef’s daily selection of fresh, seasonal, sushi and sashimi. There’s 2 items take a while to come, different in some respects, but interchangeable at times but when you want creativity, quality, and fun spot is where you want to be. This is a nice and sleek, but not fancy spot where you can get some special rolls. Next time you need some upscale Pre-Theater Eats, this place should be on your list of options.
