MXDC Ratings and Reviews
Way. Too. LOUD! Hubby and I were at a small table and we couldn't hear each other without literally shouting. Place was busy, and I felt very much just like a number at a table; waiter seated me then never returned to see if I wanted to order an appetizer while I waited. With the numbers of people it was impossible to flag him down.
Disappointingly somewhat dumbed-down Mexican food, rushed service, crowded tables, noisy room, but a very good margarita. The wine was also good, but a very small pour for $9. We had three different tacos: the mahi mahi was excellent, the chicken was meh, and the carne asada was lousy. The quesadilla was good, although, served on a single tortilla, it was more like a pizza than a quesadilla.
The restaurant is very loud and you are seated on top of each other. Our table was half in the wait station. I could actually see the numeric password each server was in putting into their computer system to enter orders. The food was good but expensive for what you get. We started with the guacamole and it was sort of bland and we got maybe 3/4 of a cup of it for $11. The blackberry margarita was awesome but again expensive. If you plan to drink more then 2 between you and other person you are with, just buy a pitcher. The pitcher is expensive but you get around 5.5 margaritas out of it and it's slightly cheaper then paying $12-$14 per drink. Overall I would not go back for a meal but possibly for a margarita as that was the best part. The service was pretty slow as far as taking our orders but she was very nice. The thing that got me was when asked which item between 2 she would recommend she said I don't know I've never tried either. I guess I believe the wait staff should at least have tried most dishes so they can offer some perspective.
The food was not bad. It was not good, but it was not bad. The service was competent, but joyless, rushed and disinterested. Felt like a Todd English Incorporated production. Sort of appeared creative, but it wasn't. At least the prices were very reasonable.
This was our third visit here, and it's gone downhill. My food was mediocre and not particularly warm. Service started out good but abruptly deteriorated as soon as the meal arrived. And, after that, there was some shenanigans with the bill which included a service charged automatically added and computed on top of tax (who does that), plus an inflation of the number of members in our party (count the heads and entrees, guys). Got to be better fake Mexican places to go and we're going to find them now.
Lobster, crab and shrimp quesadillas were amazing. So were the mushroom and corn truffle tacos. The Paloma was made with in-house grapefruit soda which gave it a super fresh taste. We were really excited to share the vegetarian Chile relleno but we’d skip it next time. Ambiance is very loud so it’d be great for happy hour and big groups.
This is a great spot for a drink, or for dinner. Upscale Mexican and Mexican-inspired dishes, excellent Margaritas, fun, dim-lit atmosphere and pretty good dishes. The Guacamole is with the trip, but my quesadilla (huitlacoche) was disappointing by comparison.
The food was good but overpriced, especially considering that if you make a reservation and sit in the dining area, you don't have access to the happy hour food & prices. However, if you sit approx. five feet away (in the bar area), you get happy hour pricing for some reason.
I was in the mood for Mexican food and this looked like a great place near my hotel. The guacamole was tasty, not the best I've had but above average. I ordered the quesadilla for a main course and it was a bit disappointing. Somewhat dry and flavors didn't blend as well as expected. Tables are very close together so it's difficult to have a private conversation. I would go back and order something different next time.
Accomplishments are something to build on, not rest on. Regrettably when it comes to food MXDC is definitely resting. This was my fourth and most disappointing visit by far. We ordered tacos--six different varieties and only the fish taco was worth eating. The rest were dull and largely flavorless. Black beans tasted bland, like they had come directly from a can--no seasoning, no flavor, no kidding. Salsa is doled out in large thimbles, too small to dip a chip. The bright spots? Guacamole. Handcrafted cocktails. Friendly staff. Sadly, until the food improves, we'll be eating Mexican elsewhere.
Overall the experience was very good. I ordered the salmon: the honey chipotle glaze was good—although I think I'd prefer more of an emphasis on the savory aspects of the dish, rather than the sweet. The sides of rice and greens were also good: all were cooked to the correct doneness. The service was very good: our server was attentive and friendly. The restaurant was quite a bit darker during dinner time than my last visit (during lunch time). The restaurant was also much more busy during dinner, so it was quite a bit louder, and I sometimes felt like the tables were too close together. Given the food and overall experience, I would say this restaurant provides a good value for your money, although, like lunch, I wish the dinner portions were a little larger—but hey, it's DC.
Amazing food, excellent service! MXDC never disappoints. Not only is the regular menu chock full of goodies, the special menu offers some tasty choices as well. The lobster and corn guacamole is THEE best. Tacos are yummy and a great deal. You can even mix and match. Seafood fishes are awesome. You just can't go wrong. And please have some cocktails! All around super dining experience!
Great recommendation from friends after a long day at our D.C. office 2 blocks away. Classic margarita was great, classic Paloma was good. Guacamole, salsa and chips were also good. We shared tacos...pork belly and short rib were delicious...mahi mahi was just ok. Sebastian was a great and attentive server. 2 diners, 2 drinks each, shared guacamole and shared entree...$64.
We travel from VA because we really like the food here. Very good Mexican with some healthy options for my health conscious partner. Service is good and when we dined this last time on Saturday for lunch the restaurant was very quiet. We will keep coming back.
We were on vacation looking for something tasty after a long day of sightseeing. Delicious food and a yummy margarita hit the spot. The place was lively for a week night.. a good sign. Very enjoyable all around. We made a reservation but were able to get in sooner.
Food was okay, I was disappointed that I requested for a birthday desserr for my wife prior to showing up and then confirming with the host once I arrived, however, the waitor never brought it out. It was embarrassing to ask again in front of my wife when I was hoping to surprise her.
Overall the experience was very good. I ordered the pollo burrito: it had a good balance of savory and fresh flavors, and the ratio of chicken to other ingredients was good. The side of mixed greens was also good: the greens were dressed perfectly. The service was excellent: our server was attentive and friendly. The restaurant was well lit with natural light—it was lunch time—and not very busy, so it was quiet. Given the food and overall experience, I would say this restaurant provides a good value for your money, although I wish the lunch portions were a little larger—but hey, it's DC.
