Murphy's Ratings and Reviews
Ordered Hagar steak. Expected fall vegetables as in menu. Got wild rice which I don't like at all. Think I should have been told by server ahead. She told me it came with it but it,didn't mention on menu. Had 6 bites of steak two pices were over cooked to well. For $28 pretty pricey.
Our meal was perfect last Saturday night. I had the skirt steak over mashed potatoes and leeks and it was divine, perfect comfort food for a chilly November night. The service was excellent; not only our server, but also everyone else who helped our server. This place is managed with a team attitude and it is well done. Terrific. Highly recommend to our neighbors in Atlanta and to visitors as well.
I have been to Murphys a number of times and have always been pleased with the food and the service. Yesterday our service was not just bad, it was horrendous. My husband and I took my parents promising a positive experience and it was anything but that.. Wine didn't come for 45 minutes..my mom asked the hostess to change tables (to try and get a waitress that would give us service) and the hostess said that our waitress only had 2 tables that night..so not sure why so slow?...waitress dropped the menus on the ground, didn't bring the bread without us asking...then brought the bread but forgot the oil...then forgot the oil again after we reminded her...then left us sitting there for a good 20 min instead of taking our order. Then brought the wrong wine... I don't understand what happened. Entrees were good but the presentation was just thrown together. The trout/lentils literally looked like someone just dumped them on the plate haphazardly. This experience was bad enough to make me rethink coming back for awhile-which is a shame, bc I've had other positive experiences. However, this is the second not so great experience we have had (last time we came for wine and were made to stand there for 30 minutes even though there was plenty of space and no one else waiting and we only wanted to drink at the bar??? ) we figured it was an off night, but clearly with our most recent experience, I can see that things are going downhill for Murphys. Hope you guys can get hostess staff and wait staff that know what they are doing, otherwise we won't be back!
We always liked Murphy's but this was a disappointing experience. First of all, the (new?) waitress did not know what one of the draft beers was. There are only FOUR draft beers on the list and this was the only "odd" one. Next, two of our party of four had ordered soup as appetizer. The soup arrived AFTER the main dish arrived. When the manager came by to check, I probed her why the soup did not come as an appetizer. She stated "sorry, but many of our clients like to have it all brought out together - we should have asked". Soups are appetizers and why label something as an appetizer if it comes out with entrees. She did remove the soups from the bill (which was good). But, (and worst), one of the entrees arrived much later than the others. Manager said she was going to talk with kitchen, but this is restaurant basics 101 - entrees come out together. So for a place like Murphy's to drop the ball like this is very disappointing. Also, waitress never came back to check how things were (she missed the opportunity to sell me another beer). We'll be going to the competition across the street next time.
We celebrated our anniversary here with long time friends. It was their first visit to GA and everything was great. Food was so good especially the pork shank and brisket. No crowd this night which was good for us. Everyone was welcoming, even took our photo for us to commemorate our anniversary.
The food and wine are the reasons to go to Murphy's. without fail, the food is fresh and creative. the wine list is impressive. special requests regarding the menu are always happily accommodated. someone from the in house wine shop is always available to advise on the wines. The negatives are with the service. although always friendly and accommodating, i've too often had bad service tied to someone not sufficiently trained. sometimes it's acknowledged - we're told that they're new and being paired with an experienced server. othertimes, they're on their own when clearly not ready for prime time. Saturday night, our most recent visit there, the server forgot to bring a wine sample i requested; she walked away after my husband ordered, seemingly having forgotten about me; she asked if i wanted the kale salad entree or the starter and there is no kale salad entree on the menu; she left our menus on the table after taking our orders; when the entrees came, our salad plates had not yet been picked up. she was sweet and kind, but just not ready for prime time. please do more training before sending servers onto the floor!!! we love the food and wine and want to keep coming back.
After the sun set on a warm day, we sat in a room with the doors open and temps outside in the 60's. The waitress encourage us to order the special duck and it was unpleasant to say the least. My teenage son ordered the steak and it came with a large pile of quinoa salad that was tasteless. Not to mention the waitress might have offered a side dish more typical of a teenage boy. The service was inattentive -- we asked a question at the beginning and promised an answer that never came. We had to actively search out the waitress to get the bill!
The Wednesday we ate, they changed their mussels (sweet onions, pancetta, white wine sauce). Quite good. Certainly better than the previous ones. Still, we look forward to the return of the pesto and garlic recipe. Ask for some additional bread. You're gonna need it to sop up the broth.
First time at Murphy's, glad I went. Food was very tasty. Portions were adequate, but if you have my appetite, you'd want a larger portion. I had the kale salad (nice lemon-based dressing) and the triple seared beef. Yum! The 'Quilt' cab sav was a very good compliment to the beef. My beautiful date enjoyed the peppered shrimp. A country girl's palate said this was petty peppery but tasty.
Desert was outstanding, both the grilled pound cake and the almost-decadent Bonzo.
Our server was working his first shift, yet you'd think he'd been at this menu and lay-out for a while. Friendly, we'll-versed and timely. Nice job, Ian!
I was really shocked that the Tuesday night special, Hanger steak with a salad, was $26.00. Yes, it was tasty and cooked perfectly, but $26 for Hanger steak and a salad???? With one cocktail and a piece of Key Lime Pie, my bill was over $50 for a Tuesday night dinner. And the price of the special was not on the menu, but I never would have thought it would be so expensive.
We make the trip from the Northern Burbs to Murphy's from time to time. It holds a lot of sentimental feelings, as Murphy's was the place my wife and I went to dinner on our first date many years ago. This time, we were with another couple, who seemed to like the food and atmosphere as much as we did. The only issue seen was somewhat minor, but disturbing: after splitting the bill between us, the "suggested tip amount" for each of the bills was based on the entire bill, not just our half/portion. Is this a software glitch, or an attempt to get someone who is not paying attention to think they are tipping 15-25%, but actually tipping 30-50%? This issue is the only reason I give the overall rating a 4, rather than a 5.
