Mud Hen Water
Food was absolutely perfectly seasoned and prepared. The fish was moist and delicious, mussels were simply succulent!!! The bread!!!! AH!!! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
I would have put 4 and a half stars, but wasn’t an option
Awesome as always.
First time there - service and food was great
Always a great place to meet with friends, enjoy great food with strong Hawaiian roots (yet an innovative twist), and of course put back a few adult beverages :)
Our go to Brunch place. Great fruit cup, pohole salad and mapo gravy
The dishes were fantastic, my only complaint is that although it was not very busy, our server never refilled our wine glasses. We had ordered a bottle.
Great food, awful service
The quality of food was good, and tapas style was great for sharing in a small group. Service was excellent. It seems to be a popular local spot, so seats are limited, and the noise level is a bit high due to the crowd. Overall a good experience.
This was our first time dining here. Everything we ordered was interesting & wonderful.
First time to restaurant. Server was not on her A game. Cook/Chef was great. We enjoyed chatting with her.
Food was excellent.
What a disappointment. Not very good fish or beet salad. Not the bay area like restaurant I thought it would be. Expensive too. Server even assumed a 40% tip when I gave cash to be applied to bill. Such a bummer.
Terrible service, missed orders, long waits, food was good, drinks were mediocre.
Second meal here and it was phenomenal. Vegetarian friendly.
Birthday celebration. It was a really n
Loved the menu, ambience and food was delicious! Best meal we had on vacation and away from the busy WAIKIKI area.
The lilikoi drink, appetizers (mussels and carbonara), and sesame black bean brownies are phenomenal and worth the visit. However, we were disappointed with main course (fried chicken). It was bland and dry and left me desiring a Costco rotisserie chicken. The service also was initially poor, with our waiter taking over 10 min to even ask for our drink order. However, halfway through the meal, a different gentleman completed our service and he was phenomenal. This waiter was very attentive and had great suggestions for desserts. We will definitely return for drinks and appetizers, but may forgo an entree.
Interesting take on local with perfect execution. Wish we had gone with a group to try everything.
Fantastic food and cocktails. Seating was a little uncomfortable.
Great atmosphere - feels a million miles from anything touristy. Good foody food.
Awesome food and drinks, plates were paced well, always enough time to enjoy one before another came, and we ordered most of the small plates. nice job!
The overall experience rating was mainly influenced by the food. I appreciate the creative menu using local ingredients with a Hawaiian/local flare. We ordered the akule spread, beet poke, pocho mussels, beef tongue, chicken long rice croquettes, and kiawe brownie with black sesame ice cream. We stuck to the appetizers to try out different dishes although the entree choices didnt seem intriguing enough to order. Out of all the dishes we ordered, the akule and pocho mussels were the best. Good flavors and love the local touch. Beet poke was alright...looked and tasted pretty close to normal poke, just pls get rid of the wasabi infused avo it doesn't fit. The beef tongue could have been a little better. Flavor was on point but the tongue would've been better with it seared on both sides. The croquettes were perfectly fried and tastey...just didn't leave me with a "oh my gosh" this is so good I want to eat it again. I guess that's also the same for the kiawe brownie also.
The service was just as other reviewers on Yelp said. The speed of the food was great but the front house needs to step up. The waiter didnt check back with us until after we ordered dessert with a woman who picked up our empty dishes that were sitting there for 20 mins.
Food was great, wine recommendation was solid, and staff was friendly. Dishes were flavorful but not overpowering. We’d love to go back and try some other dishes that we couldn’t get to this time.
Croquettes, mussels & fried chicken highly recommended.
We went here just for a weekly date night. The food was delicious but the service was terrible. We sat for 10 min before we finally got service (when I started looking around for someone). We ordered appetizers and wine. We were finished with the appetizer by the time we got our wine. My dinner came out, I had the Chicken and it was delicious. But my husbands dinner came out 20 min later! I was finishing mine by then. He had the steak. At one point I asked about it and was told well it’s made fresh to order so it comes out when it’s done. I don’t understand how steak takes longer thank chicken. So then I sat there finished with my food for the next 20 min as he ate dinner. My biggest pet peeve is serving food so far apart like that. We go to dinner to enjoy it together. The food was awesome tasting but keep in mind the dinners entree’s don’t come with a starch, so if you usually eat some, make sure to order rice (which is extra). For the two of us the total was $120. I would be ok with that if the food and service were good, but not the horrible service we got for the price. I won’t come again unfortunately.
Inventive food combining local traditions and ingredients with fine restaurant traditions. What could be better? For example: beet poke that is vegan (or at least close to vegan) but reminds you of ahi poke in most of the right ways!
Just eat it all. So fresh surprisingly innovative yet comfortable. Any if the fish dishes are standouts but if they have the miso butterscotch rice pudding. Order as many as you can
ahi collar dish really good
. Local ingredients Creatively presented and prepared. Reasonably priced, no hesitation in recommending.
Our only regret is we should've dined here sooner. Everything was exceptional. Hash, eggs and toast were excellent. Eggs were cooked perfect and exceptional. Donuts were hot, crispy and tasty. Hot coffee and cold brew exceptional. The fruit cup or side fruit was one of the best we've tasted and a great value. Lastly service was exceptional, timely and professional. Mahalo!
Love the idea of cooking in fire. Something was missing in this experience, ambience part of it.
Really good! Loved the area and the food especially it being local.
Awesome small plates and pretty good cocktails with local ingredients! Try the carbonara if they have it!
Always a great time!
I loved the adventurous spirit of Mud Hen Water. They are trying to do something different and every plate we had was exciting. A big emphasis on local ingredients means you are going to try some things that you don't eat everyday. The fried chicken served as lettuce wraps had such balanced and amazing flavors. We didn't absolutely love every dish, but we liked that they were challenging themselves to go beyond just boring renditions.
This was the best meal we had in Honolulu. The food was fresh and unique. We loved the beet poke and were impressed by the smoked he’e which was tender and balanced well. We’ll definitely go back if we are ever in the area again.
We love Town, were excited to try Mud Hen Water. it was one of the most unique dining experiences we've had and it's great value. It's a twist on known dishes like hummus, poke and Fried Chicken and those are some of the must try's! Definitely a fun spot to have dinner in Honolulu.
Awesome banana pancakes that are huge! The veggie congee had a bit of heat which was surprising since it wasn’t mentioned in the menu. Corned beef has and biscuits with mapo tofu gravy were treats. Coffee was delicious. Expect the food will come out when ready and not necessarily all at once. Share your dishes and it’s not a big deal. Will definitely return because those pancakes are to die for.
Great food, innovative and delicious. We visited on a quick trip to Honolulu because of a review on the Eater essential 38 restaurants around the country and it did not disappoint. Interesting ingredients showcasing a variety of Asian influences in preparation and flavorings. The room was not overly crowded so the noise level was low enough to easily carry on a conversation. Cocktails were also innovative and flavorful. I would definitely return.
I looove this place! I live in Japan & every time we visit my dad we go. The food and service are outstanding. My one tiny issue is sometimes it’s so loud you can’t hear what they say when they put the plate down. Especially because Hawaiian names are used, it can be hard to hear. Keep it up!
