About this restaurant

  • Lively
  • Good for groups
  • Great for creative cocktails
MUA is known for its open atmosphere, eclectic décor, art events and, of course, its delicious food. Ideal for large parties or intimate gatherings, the spacious dining room creates a relaxed, casual vibe for guests to enjoy their meals. A large selection of wines, cocktails and beers make MUA a great spot for an evening out with friends.

Family owned and run Mua was one of the first restaurants to open in what was then Auto Row in Oakland, in 2008. After their first 2 restaurants, Pastoral in Berkeley (first opened in 1982 while still students, 37 in the architecture program at Cal and San-Ju painting at SFAI) then later Soizic (Jack London Square, 1996), they wanted to shift gears from heavily curated menus to more comfort-based fare catering more to the eclectic and artistic community in Oakland. Today you’ll find people of all ages and backgrounds, from Too Short to Jerry Brown.

Our first time here and very cool inside a former Abel, automotive repair shop. Dave our server is terrific, first class service… The pork ribs are good, the beef marrow was delicious, the crabcakes were overpriced and kind of dry but overall a wonderful meal for my 99 year-old father for Father’s Day

Service was great and always sent back EMPTY plates. However, we did get there shortly after they opened so it was pretty empty. By the time we left, the whole bottom floor was packed. We had plans to see Raphael Saadiq @ the FOX theatre and this spot was only about a 7 min Uber ride away. Close to the Paramount as well. Don't know about other nights, but this night they were on point!!! 5 Stars!

Food is absolutely amazing and sophisticated. Interior decoration is very abstract and unique. Fast and pleasant serving.

This is my go to place when I bring in people from out of town. It represents Oakland perfectly diverse and fantastic. The food is great. It’s very easy to be happy with the menu. There are vegan and vegetarian menus so everybody’s happy. And I love the service

The hostess was rude. The lamb in the tagine dish was underseasoned. Our server was nice.

this is a wonderful restaurant tucked away behind a very unassuming edifice in Oakland~. Lovely ambience. Only two drawbacks - it is noisy (which actually is not bad if you are looking for a lively environment) - and it is pricey, although the food is excellent, gourmet-level preparation - which of course will be pricey. If you are looking for an excellent diniing experience for a special occasion, and price is not an object, this is definitely a spot to consider!

This was my second time coming to MUA—and sadly, it’ll be my last. My first visit wasn’t great, but I decided to give the place a second chance because so many people I know always hype it up. Unfortunately, this time was even worse, and it happened to be on my birthday, which made it even more disappointing. To keep it short: the customer service was terrible. We expected a bit of a wait since it was a Saturday, but it was more than just being busy. Our server, Juliana, was inattentive and dismissive. She constantly walked away while we were still mid-sentence, and it was difficult to get her attention throughout the night. I ordered the salmon—it was just okay, nothing memorable, and not something I’d order again. The drinks were good, which was honestly the only highlight, and we probably should’ve just stuck to those. Toward the end, we got dessert menus but decided we weren’t feeling the vibe anymore and were ready to go. One of my friends mentioned to Juliana that it was my birthday, and her response was a dry “I know.” She later brought out an empty plate with a lit candle on it. No dessert, no gesture—just a candle on a bare plate. It was awkward and honestly kind of embarrassing. At that point, I would’ve preferred nothing at all. I really wanted to like MUA and was hoping to have a great night, but instead I left feeling let down, especially after hyping it up to my friends. We ended up having a better time and better service at a random bar down the street. If the service hadn’t been so poor, maybe I would’ve considered giving it a third chance—but after this, I won’t be back. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place, and I’ll be sharing my experience with others.
