About this restaurant

  • Lively
  • Great for creative cocktails
  • Good for groups
MUA is known for its open atmosphere, eclectic décor, art events and, of course, its delicious food. Ideal for large parties or intimate gatherings, the spacious dining room creates a relaxed, casual vibe for guests to enjoy their meals. A large selection of wines, cocktails and beers make MUA a great spot for an evening out with friends.

Family owned and run Mua was one of the first restaurants to open in what was then Auto Row in Oakland, in 2008. After their first 2 restaurants, Pastoral in Berkeley (first opened in 1982 while still students, 37 in the architecture program at Cal and San-Ju painting at SFAI) then later Soizic (Jack London Square, 1996), they wanted to shift gears from heavily curated menus to more comfort-based fare catering more to the eclectic and artistic community in Oakland. Today you’ll find people of all ages and backgrounds, from Too Short to Jerry Brown.

This was my second time coming to MUA—and sadly, it’ll be my last. My first visit wasn’t great, but I decided to give the place a second chance because so many people I know always hype it up. Unfortunately, this time was even worse, and it happened to be on my birthday, which made it even more disappointing. To keep it short: the customer service was terrible. We expected a bit of a wait since it was a Saturday, but it was more than just being busy. Our server, Juliana, was inattentive and dismissive. She constantly walked away while we were still mid-sentence, and it was difficult to get her attention throughout the night. I ordered the salmon—it was just okay, nothing memorable, and not something I’d order again. The drinks were good, which was honestly the only highlight, and we probably should’ve just stuck to those. Toward the end, we got dessert menus but decided we weren’t feeling the vibe anymore and were ready to go. One of my friends mentioned to Juliana that it was my birthday, and her response was a dry “I know.” She later brought out an empty plate with a lit candle on it. No dessert, no gesture—just a candle on a bare plate. It was awkward and honestly kind of embarrassing. At that point, I would’ve preferred nothing at all. I really wanted to like MUA and was hoping to have a great night, but instead I left feeling let down, especially after hyping it up to my friends. We ended up having a better time and better service at a random bar down the street. If the service hadn’t been so poor, maybe I would’ve considered giving it a third chance—but after this, I won’t be back. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place, and I’ll be sharing my experience with others.

The whole experience was a vibe. Worst part of dinner was parking.

Always fun to visit MUA! It’s got the busy, eclectic, city vibe, delicious dishes and great service. Guac, calamari for starters and the mains: soft shelled crab po’boy, burger, salmon, fried chicken. Everyone at the table enjoyed their choices. See you soon MUA!

Wanted to like this restaurant, but unfortunately not the best experience. Hostess did not seem like she wanted to be there. It took 25 mins from getting seated (with a reservation) to get water. Wait staff seemed stretched thin and covering too many tables- obviously not a fault of the staff but perhaps management. Food came out lukewarm and fries soggy so food had been sitting around for a bit. Cocktails were good however. Overall, meh.

10 out of 10. Great way to spend Valentine’s. The food was delicious. Our server was very tentative. The music was a vibe.

Who knew Oakland goes off like this? Incredible open space in what I assume is a converted warehouse. I sat upstairs, overlooking the main dining area, which was perfect. Really diverse crowd, fantastic set list by the DJ, great overall energy. Shared the Caesar salad to start, which frankly could have been half the size (it was two full romaine hearts) and the 1lb Ribeye with fries. Finished with the bread pudding. That was more than enough. Great service. Note that 20% gratuity is automatically added, which I was fine with, but just beware so you don't double-tip.
