Mr. Tipple’s heralds back to a 1950s NYC basement. Cozy. Dark. Boozy. The intimate setting features local jazz artists up close and personal. It’s a joint where you come as you are, hear great music, tap your toes, and sip a properly chilled cocktail.

My name is Mr. Tipple. Just a simple and laughable bloke hailing from London. I run a recording studio. My friends joke that you’ll oft find me spinning cocktails, not reeling tape. After a few too many, I usually just sit back and enjoy the music, having forgotten to hit record. Regardless, the band is always jiving, the whiskey is always cold, and we’re having a smashing good time.

Sat night. 630 reservations.
Great intimate venue. Doorman was sweet ....
Music was entertaining, perfect Jazz ensemble. Embiance surprising and lovely!
Drinks were a little pricey, as they weren't noted on the menu. It was more than half our bill, including "appetizers" . The blacken shrimp was a bit cold as it wasn't freshly cooked(for the price we pay, it should be cooked to order). Brussel sprouts were amazing! Gumbo wasn't "hot" at all and tasted more like stew?
Overall, would visit again!
Thank you for a great evening!
Thank you for taking the time to write and review and sharing the details of your experience. I'm glad to hear the music and vibe was lovely. The cocktails are all 'line' or 'flat' priced and this $13 per drink is listed at the top of category. Admittedly, the font is smaller. I have shared your comments with our kitchen. I'm sorry that you received cold food. I know how underwhelming this can feel and how important temperature and to properly season. I will work with the kitchen team.
The food was a little dry and tasteless, our 1st server didn't seem to want to be at work, and the bar area at times was noisier than the jazz band we came to see. Jazz band was great!
Loved everything about our night here, music food, great evening
Great venue if you like jazz - the act that was on was great and kept the environment lively. Drinks were tasty and the food was good as well, no complaints!
Great find in easy to reach and park area of SF. Love that the food is provided by adjacent restaurant Hazel so Mr. Tipples can concentrate on its venue and talent.
No music due to cancellation of band. No notice plus the cancel policy is severe. Thus no point in going there. They didnt suggest going next door to the Southern Kitchen which shares the same kitchen.
Pretty nice. The bands that come here are usually good, but yesterday was a little meh. Considering I booked a Valentine’s Day special table for 40 dollars (in addition to buying food and drinks), I did not feel like I got the value I sought.
Nonetheless, I would recommend this place for people in search of a classy date night in a cozy setting
Great spot for Friday and Saturday night live music and jazz. Gets very busy, however if you grab a drink and wait, generally a table will open up. Also a good spot for special occasions, such as holidays. Went there for Valentine’s Day and had a great time. Highly recommend
This was our first jazz experience and we loved it! wonderfully thought about ambiance and lighting! The quartet music was soothing and relaxing: saxophone appealed the most to our amateur ears. we enjoyed drums and piano. We will need time to be able to appreciate bass. The delicious vegetarian quality food variety came as a surprise as we were mentally prepared to sacrifice dinner for jazz. Even the fries were the best I have eaten so far. Brussels sprouts and brownies were terrific. They have salad, cheese, and olives as well. The service was compassionate.
The only issue was: some people talking too loudly and non-stop while music was being played:(😠🤫🤐
Go. Great setting. But my only complaint is now, if you get the fried chicken on the top of the great and abundant Casear kale salad, the chicken is room temp. But chicken in it's fried skin doesn't taste right that way. It needs to be hot. Three of us ordered it, and three of us agreed. And don't eat fried chicken more than once a year...it will kill you. So says my cardiologist.
This is my new favorite Jazz spot now!
Romantic tables for 2. Small and candle lit. Really fun cocktail menu. The lucky money cat was delicious and served in a porcelain car. Yardstick was also delicious. Jazz band was perfect.
Terrible service. Food was cold and nothing special.
Limited menu, music mediocre. Cannot recommend. Will give it one more try soon.
Awesome place to bring friends or family. Perfectly proportioned food, excellent entertainment, and tasty drinks!
Sat right up front and enjoyed great food and drink with some great live music - highly recommended!
Great musical entertainment and overall ambiance. Mediocre acoustics and food.
Really cool spot for a date by Civic Center. Great cocktails, good food, and a really great ambiance - particularly if you like live jazz music. Will definitely come here again.
Love this place and my go to for a date with my wife.
I love jazz. I could hardly hear the music because the crowd just a bit loud. They are NOT listening to the music. Crowd are just talking loudly to hear each other. I feel that the music is just echoing because place so small. Food is great. Service is ok.
We were there to hear Le Jazz Hot and they didn’t disappoint. Loved the venue and the sound is great. Great dancing by the crowd. Only quibbles were a lack of vegetarian options and a little slow service. The only real problem was with the group of folks in front of us with at least two women who seemed to be ‘ ‘hosting’ and spent too much time standing up between us and the band and talking so loudly that they prevented us from hearing the band.
It was a great evening with good food and music!
Perfect experience. Hung out for a couple of hours listening to great live jazz and enjoying very well priced and delicious items from restaurant next door. Blackened shrimp was excellent as was the chicken with waffle. We had rezzies for 6 but the high top table we sat at accommodated an extra last minute friend.
The blackened shrimp are amazing. Cocktails delicious. Great ambience
Mr. Tipples made for a nice evening out with good music, food and beer.
You must have the sazerac. It’s a great drink.
People were talking loudly while the band was playing, showing no respect for the musicians.
A must go to!! I have been traveling to San Francisco for years and booked Mr. Tipples based on reviews. We wanted a live jazz band and good food and got that and much more. We were more than happy with the night! We will be back!!
Mr. Tripples is one of the best JAZZ bars in San Francisco if not the best. I loved live Jazz, cocktails were good too. Very good ambiance.
Limited menu, though food was good. Drinks very pricey. Makes for an expensive night out in the city.
Literally, could not hear any of the vocalist’s songs due to the extreme noise from other patrons. People were raising their voices to talk over the music, as if they were there to converse rather than listen. It was embarrassing for the vocalist and her band. We left early when it became clear we weren’t going to hear the music. I would not recommend Mr. Tipples to anyone wanting a jazz performance.
Awesome food
Great setting
Kinda loud...but it is a jazz club/eatery
Overall it was a fun/delicious experience
What a great experience! Great food. Fantastic music. It was a great way to spend our last evening in SF and I would highly recommend going!
Great music, service, and food. We couldn't have asked for a better 1st night in San Francisco.
What a find! It's like entering a different world -- with wonderful cocktails, delicious - very reasonably priced and delicious Southern comfort food -- great servers and bartenders. And live jazz -- without an additional cover charge. It's also an easy walk to SF Jazz, the Opera and Symphony. We're coming back soon.
Would have a hard time recommending this venue. If you want a place to listen to great jazz music and have a good food search other places in San Francisco. Offering happy hour prices and music (simultaneously) simply does not work. The 'after work' crowd is far more interested in socializing than listening to music....as we found out the hard way.
Great place to have a few drinks and catch some jazz in an intimate environment. If you appreciate good music, this is a great spot.
Pre-concert drinks & snacks
Great Place! delicious food , jazz, relaxing ambiance with good drinks
The music, food, ambience, everything was simply phenomenal.
