My name is Mr. Tipple. Just a simple and laughable bloke hailing from London. I run a recording studio. But my friends joke that you’ll oft find me spinning cocktails, not reeling tape. After a few too many, I admit, I usually just sit back and enjoy the music, having forgotten to hit record. Regardless, the band is always jiving, the whiskey is always cold, and we’re always having a smashing good time. Join the merriment.
What a great experience! Great food. Fantastic music. It was a great way to spend our last evening in SF and I would highly recommend going!
Great music, service, and food. We couldn't have asked for a better 1st night in San Francisco.
What a find! It's like entering a different world -- with wonderful cocktails, delicious - very reasonably priced and delicious Southern comfort food -- great servers and bartenders. And live jazz -- without an additional cover charge. It's also an easy walk to SF Jazz, the Opera and Symphony. We're coming back soon.
Would have a hard time recommending this venue. If you want a place to listen to great jazz music and have a good food search other places in San Francisco. Offering happy hour prices and music (simultaneously) simply does not work. The 'after work' crowd is far more interested in socializing than listening to music....as we found out the hard way.
Great place to have a few drinks and catch some jazz in an intimate environment. If you appreciate good music, this is a great spot.
Pre-concert drinks & snacks
Great Place! delicious food , jazz, relaxing ambiance with good drinks
The music, food, ambience, everything was simply phenomenal.
Thanks Open Table for helping us find this little gem. Great service. Perfect pre-play spot
Great ambiance, great service, great music. Will definitely be back to Mr Tipples.
Great place to hangout with live jazz and simple Southern food.
I had extremely special time in this restaurant with my old friends!
If I have next time to visit San Francisco again, I will visit there again.
This was a fabulous find. We happened upon Happy Hour cocktails before a great jazz trio. Delicious cocktails and charming service. The grilled Cajun prawn appetizer was so good we ordered a second plate. The ambiance was warm and fun with regulars up dancing the Lindy Hop to the live jazz.
I will definitely return the next time I’m in San Francisco.
The problem is I specifically requested that our table be close to the stage we were basically placed at a table back by the bar. This is very disappointing - we had to keep rearranging our seats so that my guests can actually see the band. I contacted you guys a day after my reservations to make sure the table would be close to the stage and was reassured by Colin I believe that the table would be close to the stage and was still seated near the back by the bar. We had anxious people standing behind us staring at us waiting for us to leave to get our table. If you guarantee a patron that the seating will be near the stage that guarantee should be kept. Random people were coming and sitting near the stage and it was clear that they didn't have any registration.
Very special place!
Food was tasty. Band was great. Service was space - never got water (over 3 hours) and had to stop someone to order more drinks or food.
We wanted to like Mr. Tipple's, but very poor service and bartending prevented that. The venue is a jazz club with a bit of speakeasy vibe and the music was good. The food from the limited menu is OK, but they would be better off with just some small bar bits or no food at all. It seems like a place that should do a good job with cocktails, but they don't. An Old Cuban was ordered and they brought a drink that bore no relationship whatsoever to an Old Cuban, other than containing rum. That they didn't know how to make an Old Cuban was fine (although in the age of the internet, just look it up on your phone), but sending another drink creates the impression that they didn't know that they didn't know. In the hopes of keeping it simple, a gin and tonic was requested. Who knew that a gin and tonic could be done poorly? Stick to beer and wine here or order from their short list of cocktails. They do seem to know how to prepare those. Our server had a sour demeanor. After requesting our check, for more than ten minutes he ignored our tables despite numerous efforts to his attention. We finally took our check to the bar to cash out. The mandatory 20% added to bills may explain why our waiter simply didn't care about providing any service, much less good service.
Mr Tipple's was able to accommodate our party of 8 by combining a couple of the tables. The music was excellent and the service was good. We would definitely go back.
Positives: excellent music, good quality sound, reasonable sound level so that we could hear the music and also talk among ourselves, very tasty cocktails, good selection of beer and wine
Not-so-positives: food was just ok (I tasted the fried chicken and the gumbo), cocktails are rather small for the price
Overall it was a very good experience and we will return.
The music was great! Food and drinks were just ok - definitely not bad, just didn't seem super spectacular given the prices
Mr Tipples is a great venue! Enjoyed the jazz, good food, and lovely service. Highly recommend!
It was amazing!!! Food and drinks were great!!
Music was great and good atmosphere but it was a bit too noisy to hear the music
Wonderful Jazz music with an intimate setting. Wish we lived here and could come more often.
It was great!
This place was amazing! End of story. Everyone has to try Mr. Tipple’s for themself.
This was our first visit. We were heading to a show at SFJAZZ so we couldn't linger with the (great) music for as long as I'd have liked. The menu is small but the food was tasty, the drinks were great, and the service was attentive. I'll be back.
We were so happy to find Mr. Tipple’s. The food was delicious. I had the yummy blackened shrimp on a bed of arugula. My fiancé had the gumbo - also delish. The special cocktails were excellent and as a bonus we listened to live jazz! We’ll be back.
The food was yummy but 1 hour later my husband and I were both in the bathroom. It wasn’t the drinks. We ordered different drinks and didn’t share. The music and atmosphere was awesome. We would come again for drinks and music, probably not the food.
While we were there for pre Symphony dinner, it is really a jazz night club with great food and live music. Don’t go there for conversation. Just listen to great music!!! Pay half for what you would pay at other pre Symphony dinner restaurant in area.
WE had a blast! I was joined by 20+ friends in the sofa alcove to celebrate my birthday. Conner was very helpful in making the evening a success. Delicious drinks and food paired with fantastic live music, you can't go wrong. Thank you!
Fantastic jazz combo. Food was good. The service was okay. I can't wait to go back.
Everything on the menu was amazing. I love jazz, but my wife doesn't. She calls it elevator music. She loved the both bands while we were there and said we need to make this a regular date night spot when the grandparents can watch the kids. I definitely agree with her. Our only disappointment was on Sunday morning when they were closed and we both wanted the chicken and waffles again for breakfast!
This place is a lot of fun
We went here pre-theatre, so sorta early- I’d imagine this place gets even better a bit later at night
It’s a jazz club, with live music , a full bar and a pretty nice food menu. It’s overall vibe is that of a hidden jazz club from a past era.
Had a couple cocktails, all very good, the fried chicken and ribs, also good, but not great, and listened to the music (I’m not an expert on jazz, so I’ll pass on a review there, but the music seemed good to me and was at a volume where you could still have interaction with people at your table)
It was fun and cool and I look forward to going back
I can not recommend this place enough! Amazing live performances that I can’t do justice by explaining it, so fantastic and interactive at some points but not to an uncomfortable level. The performers are just so talented. The food was fantastic! The best Mac n cheese I’ve ever had and the cornbread was so tasty. Great Southern food! I would recommend booking a table and coming early around 7-8 to be seated in front as it does get quite packed after 8. You need to experience it, will definitely go again! Also a great date night spot.
Ambiance was Grade A- no doubt about it. Perfect for date night. It’s super romantic and I loved the live Jazz.
Food was pretty good. I would give it a B.
Service was “okay.” When we first sat down, no one for an extended period of time came to take our orders (like 20 mins). It was hard to get a waiter’s attention. For example, we were brought food and no silverware. It took us time to get someone to assist us.
Overall, give the experience a B. Ambiance was great. Food was good. Service was “okay.” We overall had a good night. I would recommend it overall.
We made a reservation for Valentine’s Day. We then receive da phone call about a week before saying that ?-Day was ticketed event. We paid the $75 and were promised two glasses of champagne, a rose, a teddy bear, and chocolates.
We arrived on time and were seated in the worst table (directly behind a pillar that hid the band) despite there being other tables available. Next I noticed that our table did not have a teddy bear like other tables. I brought this up with our waitress who said she would look into it. She talked with the host who said something to here and shook his head. She then proceed to take our order but to not address the missing teddy bear. We decided to let it go until the end of the meal. We asked again after receiving the bill. She kinda looked awkwardly at us, paused, and said she would look into it again. She went back to the host who looked like said something like “Fine.” We got a bear and a look of exasperation from the waitress.
The food was bland. The cocktails were so-so. And the bill came with automatic gratuity of 20%. The only saving grace was the band.
We had a fun evening. The music was great and the crowd lively and fun. The food was just ok, and quite frankly disappointing. It took forever to come and was barely warm when arrived. It was also bland and unexciting. The cocktails were awesome though pricey. I think we'd go back for music and cocktails and not arrive hungry.
Came here for the first time during Restaurant Week and so glad I did! It was a great place to catch up with old friends over cocktails and live music. The service was wonderful and didn't make us feel rushed even after most people had already left.
nice music and foods
Opentable said it’s restaurant week menu. But when we arrived, they said Saturday was excluded!!!!
