The New York Times referred to Mr Thomas’s Chop House as ‘probably Manchester’s most venerable pub’. It’s quite something to live up to but, judging by the popularity of this historic pub, the Mr Thomas’s team aren’t struggling to manage. Established in 1867 this historic spot is full of charm and atmosphere, with tiled floors and dark wood bar harking back to Victorian times and the down to earth staff reminding punters exactly what good pub service is too. Offering typically British food, created using the best local ingredients, Mr Thomas’s is a study in modern UK dining – the old favourites from mother’s table are all there, true comfort food with a dash of sophistication and a pint of excellent real ale to wash it down too.

Great night and the food was excellent. However the place could do with a luck of paint and a really good clean as it's a bit tatty looking and the toilets left a lot to be desired

Great little pub with an tremendous back story and beer. Added to that the food is excellent. Traditional dishes served and cooked well in slightly different ways. Particularly good for bringing foreign visitors to for a great night out in a real and unique pub.

Six off us, all family, dined here on a Saturday evening at 6.30pm. Although the place was absolutely heaving with customers, we received wonderful and attentive service from the staff and enjoyed a fantastic, freshly cooked meal. We will certainly visit again and highly recommend Mr Thomas's to everybody.

I found the food here to be of an adequate level. I fear the only way to have got a nicer meal would be to spend a lot more money. The broccoli bomb starter was slightly disappointing with not having much flavour and the textures were all wrong. I then had the corned beef hash, as it seemed the most reasonably priced for the quality and was again rather let down. I think they could have done with more seasoning and just a bit more effort put in. The presentation of the dishes was very good, but the actual taste left a lot to be desired. The atmosphere felt a bit forced and it felt very much like a pub that had decided to try a hand at cooking. Given that the pub had a separate seating area for the restaurant, it felt all thrown together and that the layout hadn't been thought through at all. Staff here were lovely though and the service was great. They were able to cope with our last minute changes to the reservation and were all happy and cheerful. I would say the staff were the best part of the experience at the restaurant. Overall though, I must admit that the experience was quite disappointing and I would suggest people look elsewhere for such a meal. After having spent £30 on two courses and a 3rd of a bottle of wine, I feel rather let down and have definitely had nicer meals for less money elsewhere.

Beautiful tiled victorian room. Tasty honest food. Wine list surprisingly varied. Attentive service.

I've visited Mr Thomas's Chop House twice in the last few months, both time for the Sunday Roast. Great value, beautifully cooked meat with sensational roasties and well-cooked veg. The starters are great too- I highly recommend the corned beef hash cake and black pudding with homemade piccalilli. This is superb traditional English food at its very best. Service was quick and attentive and there is an excellent range of wines to select from. The Victorian surroundings create a traditional ambience. I'll be back.

I went with two friends from Yorkshire who had never been before. This was my second visit in two trips to Manchester in five years (I live in Australia). Food was great and portions generous. The bar has a good selection of proper real ales and the wine list is also good. Service was first rate. My friends said they would definitely eat there again if they were visiting the city.

Eat there Sunday evening, no rush, good service and great home cooked style food. The 3 meat roast dinner was excellent. Good service

I booked a table for 2 at 9:30 on Saturday. Arrived on time only to be told that another table has nicked our table by pushing them together. Had to wait to be seated until 9:50. I ordered 2 drinks when we first sat down and the waiter come back at 10pm to take our food order. It was some 35 minutes later that the drinks arrived 10:35 shortly followed by my starter my wifes starter come some 10 minutes later. It was almost 20 minutes between finishing our starters until the mains come again one was served around 10 minutes before the other. We decided not the go for desert and explained our dis satisfaction only to be told we where extremely busy (which clearly was not the case as by the time our starters arrived there where only 3 or 4 tables actually eating. I got an email the following day from Open Table asking why we had not turned up to our booking as Thomas's marked us as a no show. I have ate in many different resturants either through Open Table or booked with the establishment directly and have never felt the need to leave a negative review before. The food however when it did arrive was acceptable for the price.

Took my dad here for his birthday. The venue is lovely but the service was very slow. We were offered free drinks as an apology however I honestly thought they could have done a bit better than that. They also tried to take our plates away three times even when I said we weren't finished! Food was alright but a bit dry, I don't think I'll go back.
