Mr Thomas's Chop House

The New York Times referred to Mr Thomas’s Chop House as ‘probably Manchester’s most venerable pub’.  It’s quite something to live up to but, judging by the popularity of this historic pub, the Mr Thomas’s team aren’t struggling to manage.  Established in 1867 this historic spot is full of charm and atmosphere, with tiled floors and dark wood bar harking back to Victorian times and the down to earth staff reminding punters exactly what good pub service is too.  Offering typically British food, created using the best local ingredients, Mr Thomas’s is a study in modern UK dining – the old favourites from mother’s table are all there, true comfort food with a dash of sophistication and a pint of excellent real ale to wash it down too.

We visited Mr Thomas's to celebrate our daughters a-level results and for the most part the food was okay with a couple of exceptions. My wife's starter arrived when everyone else had finished theirs so when her plate was cleared her main arrived immediately. The barnsley chop was quite nice but came with nothing you had to order side dishes separately. My daughters steak was tough dry and unfortunately when we were leaving we saw one of the waiters returning from Tesco with a packet of steak. We were asked at the beginning if we would like water and asked for 2 lots, when it arrived it was 2 bottles which cost £4.25 each plus tip !!!! For the most part the food was okay but a little overpriced and I wouldn't consider it good value for money.

The food was nice and the tiled interior was in keeping with the Victorian chop house theme. Just the food was quite slow in coming out.

Had a really nice steak here on a Saturday night. Service was just a little bit slow - no one seemed to be collecting diners from the service point. Would recommend though.

We had lunch here after my son's graduation. Sat outside in the little square by the church (beautiful weather!). The staff couldn't have been nicer or friendlier and the food was delicious - especial mention for the Finnan haddock and poached egg - wonderful! This was my second visit and honestly - if you are going to be in Manchester, then this is a 'must do'. It has everything; history, ambience, marvellous service, food and wine.

I really enjoy eating here as the food is always delicious and the atmosphere is good. A small menu but it should cater for most people. Sides are ordered separate which can make the mains look small, however I do end up leaving full up having two courses. The food is probably a little expensive but the quality can be tasted.

The maitre'd was very friendly and helpful but we didn't linger because we were sitting next to a cold radiator when the temperature was about 2 degrees outside and we'd got wet on the walk to the pub (which isn't that easy to find if you're a stranger to the city!). The corned beef speciality was good but a bit too salty and the starters were tasty but a little steep at £9 for scallops and black pudding. We were also disappointed with the wine which was £24 but not as good as some supermarket bottles for £5! I think it might be a better experience on a warmer day when there were more customers and a jollier atmosphere?

Visited for Valentines day '16 The Decor is absolutely fantastic, and the building itself it well worth a visit, like many of Manchester's lovely buildings it has old world charm and style in plentiful amounts. Unfortunately, the food was very very bad. The menu was quite out of date with contemporary tastes and prepared to an average standard. My partner had the Roast Beef dinner which was very fatty, and clearly a cheap cut. I had the dish that this place is famous for; the corn beef hash. Which in fairness was presented very well, and looked great. I happened to be sitting next near a copy of a recipe book featuring the very recipe I had ordered, and gave it a quick glance, all great ingredients. To my tastebuds though there was something very wrong with the beef brisket, or the shortening as it was quite disgusting after a few mouthfuls. The white choc cheesecake I ordered was not brought to room temp before serving and was close to frozen, also was very cloying and perhaps needed something citric (lime coolis?) to cut through the taste. Bad recipe, terribly prepared. MY partner had the Ice-cream which came with soggy shortbread and an embarrassing icing pattern that looked like one of her 6 year old pupils had made it. The ice-cream was shoved on top of some crumbs in a glass and we could certainly taste that it was not "home-made". Anyone who has had really great ice-cream will know the difference. Valentines fell of a Sunday this year, and Manchester seemed quite quiet. This restaurant had 3 other couples dining between 7-9pm. Clearly the locals have gotten the message. Avoid this place... UNTIL it is hopefully modernised.

Lovely atmosphere, at the same time cosy and trendy. Friendly but not imposing service and personnel. No-nonsense food with good taste and ingredients, visually pleasing while avoiding "foam-gimmicks". The Manchester Steak was a really nice surprise.

Overall really good. Lovely staff, great ambience and decor inside. Standard of the food was impressive, but just one or two pointers. One of our party had the braised beef and the roasted vegetables needed to be cooked for longer as they were still quite hard ( as you find in a lot of places nowadays because that's the way the chefs like them). Also, the temperature inside just could have been a little warmer with it being winter time. Otherwise though, a lovely experience and it being very busy obviously points to the fact that a lot of people like eating here.

I attended for a midweek lunch and found it to be more busy than I expected, I have been a couple of times now at various different times. I popped in with a friend for a lunch and catch up and as always the food was delightful, there is always a little wait in the food but it is worth it. The only complaint I have is there is a tendency to squash you in, especially when there are only two of you.

Went on a Sunday Evening and Loved the original decor inside the building and the food and service was very good. I had the corned beef hash and my wife had the roast gammon, but would go back again and sample the midweek menu as the Sunday menu is roast driven. All in all a very nice evening and if I do have one complaint, it is the wine seemed a little over priced, but other than that it was very good.

We were booked in for 5.15pm as we needed to be leaving no later than 7pm to catch a show, we arrived 5 mins early and were shown to our table. The dinning area was very busy but that's no excuse for nobody to even come to take a drinks order for 20 mins. We ordered our food at the same time, 10 mins later our starters appeared, nothing particularly wrong with them but lacked a bit of imagination it was almost as if they were just plonked on the plate and sent out. 45 mins after our starter plates had been cleared away our main still hasn't arrived and nobody had even been to ask if we wanted anymore drinks!! I asked a waitress how much longer we had to wait so she went to the kitchen to enquire, she came back to apologise as whoever had cleared our starter plates away hadn't informed the kitchen we had finished. It was now 6.40pm so had to cancel our mains so we could make the show, we ended up grabbing a burger from a van. Not quite the dinning experience we had planned. I can safely say it is without a doubt the worst customer service I have ever come across and certainly will not be visiting again!!!

After walking past several times, we finally decided to try this place for Sunday Lunch and we were not disappointed! The staff were lovely and accommodating, and the food was delicious. The portion sizes were generous and the gravy was unlimited! What more could you ask for with a Sunday roast? It isn't the cheapest Sunday roast you could get, but I think it is well worth the money.

Great service, excellent menu and the corned beef hash, Mr Thomas's speciality, is to die for. My companion had the gigantic Steak and Kidney pudding with chips and was forced to abandon it because he just couldn't manage to swallow any more. An extensive wine list and a good selection of draught ales compliment one of Manchester's oldest establishments.

I found the food here to be of an adequate level. I fear the only way to have got a nicer meal would be to spend a lot more money. The broccoli bomb starter was slightly disappointing with not having much flavour and the textures were all wrong. I then had the corned beef hash, as it seemed the most reasonably priced for the quality and was again rather let down. I think they could have done with more seasoning and just a bit more effort put in. The presentation of the dishes was very good, but the actual taste left a lot to be desired. The atmosphere felt a bit forced and it felt very much like a pub that had decided to try a hand at cooking. Given that the pub had a separate seating area for the restaurant, it felt all thrown together and that the layout hadn't been thought through at all. Staff here were lovely though and the service was great. They were able to cope with our last minute changes to the reservation and were all happy and cheerful. I would say the staff were the best part of the experience at the restaurant. Overall though, I must admit that the experience was quite disappointing and I would suggest people look elsewhere for such a meal. After having spent £30 on two courses and a 3rd of a bottle of wine, I feel rather let down and have definitely had nicer meals for less money elsewhere.

I've visited Mr Thomas's Chop House twice in the last few months, both time for the Sunday Roast. Great value, beautifully cooked meat with sensational roasties and well-cooked veg. The starters are great too- I highly recommend the corned beef hash cake and black pudding with homemade piccalilli. This is superb traditional English food at its very best. Service was quick and attentive and there is an excellent range of wines to select from. The Victorian surroundings create a traditional ambience. I'll be back.

I went with two friends from Yorkshire who had never been before. This was my second visit in two trips to Manchester in five years (I live in Australia). Food was great and portions generous. The bar has a good selection of proper real ales and the wine list is also good. Service was first rate. My friends said they would definitely eat there again if they were visiting the city.

I booked a table for 2 at 9:30 on Saturday. Arrived on time only to be told that another table has nicked our table by pushing them together. Had to wait to be seated until 9:50. I ordered 2 drinks when we first sat down and the waiter come back at 10pm to take our food order. It was some 35 minutes later that the drinks arrived 10:35 shortly followed by my starter my wifes starter come some 10 minutes later. It was almost 20 minutes between finishing our starters until the mains come again one was served around 10 minutes before the other. We decided not the go for desert and explained our dis satisfaction only to be told we where extremely busy (which clearly was not the case as by the time our starters arrived there where only 3 or 4 tables actually eating. I got an email the following day from Open Table asking why we had not turned up to our booking as Thomas's marked us as a no show. I have ate in many different resturants either through Open Table or booked with the establishment directly and have never felt the need to leave a negative review before. The food however when it did arrive was acceptable for the price.

Took my dad here for his birthday. The venue is lovely but the service was very slow. We were offered free drinks as an apology however I honestly thought they could have done a bit better than that. They also tried to take our plates away three times even when I said we weren't finished! Food was alright but a bit dry, I don't think I'll go back.
