Mr. G's at Peninsula Kitchen & Bar
We went and they told us the kitchen was closed. Not a satisfactory experience since we drove 20 minutes to get there and had a reservation on open table. WON’T BE GOING BACK
Unexpected good food. Definitely returning for another dinner.
The vibe is half baked. Place was empty for a thursday (little friday night) on the peninsula. Just odd...
It was my birthday dinner and Mr. G's provided an outstanding venue for the celebration!
I loved this restaurant when it was on Balboa Island and was so ready to try the new location. The atmosphere is not what it was on the Island but it made absolutely no difference to me. The food is beyond outstanding. Mr G can COOK! The menu is diversified and now has some of the items that were specials before as regular entree’s. If I lived closer I would be there by myself several times a week. His pasta , which is all freshly made is fabulous. I can’t possibly convey how much I love the food here. He is definitely a CHEF. I wish him well in his new location but he is definitely missed on the Island. I will most definitely return.
Nice place l, but took a long time for food and then was incorrect.
If you like Italian food, you will not be disappointed with the menu here, and you will be extremely impressed by the execution of the dishes. The entrees are easily 4-7 dollars lower in price than you would pay for the equivalent quality at any other socal Italian restaurant...and that is not even taking the great water views into account. Mr. G's previous location, on Balboa island, was cozy, and friendly. This new location has two levels of dining and drinking (both with water views), is much more spacious, and has parking in front - yet it has lost none of the friendly service, and gracious hospitality that starts at the top, with the eponymous Mr. G himself. You would have a hard time not enjoying yourself here.
The wine corkage fee is only $20, which is about average, and definitely lower than most quality Italian spots, but I'm convinced $0 corkage is the way to go. I'm not sure why more restaurateurs don't go this route. But I digress. Eat here...you'll like it.
Dinner and service was outstanding. The food was as good as it was in Balboa but with a great Bay view.
Beautiful views, amazing food, and phenomenal staff. G was entirely welcoming, came to our table and shared stories with us. His staff was attentive the entire meal amd the food was incredible. We have already told 5 of our friends about G's and cant wait to go back
We had a terrible experience. Made a reservation to celebrate our engagement. When we got there, they didn’t even ask for our name. They asked us where we wanted to sit and walked us around the restaurant with two other groups and just saw a table and said “you can just go there”. We sat at the table for 30 minutes before someone even greeted us and asked for our drink orders or offered water. We asked to order our food too. We then sat for an additional 50 minutes before we decided to leave. Not one person came to check on us the entire time. It wasn’t even busy. There were only two other tables seated. When we decided to leave after sitting in the restaurant for an hour and a half, we tried to find someone to say that we were going. When we walked over to the first person we could find, we simply said “can we ask you something?” The girl rolled her eyes and walked away.
So we left. I have never been treated so poorly in a restaurant before. I work in the food industry and this was the most disappointing dining experience ever. I can’t even call it a dining experience though, because we never had the opportunity to ask for food
We sat for 15 minutes upstairs and received no service. (Saturday night so expected) We went downstairs and ordered a drink and another 15 minutes past and the drinks never came. Great location, terrible service. Half the tables downstairs were empty.
G is the proprietor and Chef. He treats customers like guests in his home. Food is amazing. This is a yet to be discovered gem. Only tell your best friends.,
Bad service, cool food and you guys did not have ketchup
Amazing experience! We will come back every time we are in town. Food is to die for!
It was our first time at Mr. G's and we loved it! It overlooks Newport Harbor, has 2 floors, all the staff was great and accommodating. Mr. G was a gracious host! GO CHK IT OUT!
Small plates as well as mains were more than satisfactory. As usual, the burgers starred. We compare this to the previous "Mr G's" on Balboa Island, and the quality of the food has certainly not suffered. We enjoyed a beautiful open air deck experience one afternoon. The deck furniture does need some attention, refinishing, replacing as needed. The late night scene is something else, I'm told. It includes some holdovers from American Junkie with a youthful vibe and DJ music. We won't be back to experience that, but that is a good sign. Mr G has something for (almost) everyone.
I reserved a spot at Mr. G's off the ezperience I had at his bistro. This place has undercooked pasta (ordered the carbonara) and watered down orange juice. I did not drink the bottomless mimosas or champagne but it seems like that is the main attraction here.
Loved Mr G on Balboa. So hopeful this would be just as good w better views. Service was incredibly slow and waiter needing reminding of our order, our request for drinks, etc.
Food was just OK.
Hopefully things will improve.
Had a wonderful dinner !! Same great food as when Mr. g’s was on Balboa Island. Now with a wonderful view of the harbor and valet parking.
Upstairs bar has happy hour from 3-6 with $4. well drinks, beer, and wine.
Brunch too. Haven’t had brunch yet, but looking forward to trying it.
What an awesome experience! We came in and asked Lesley and Chef G what they recommended - we had no clue what a great experience we had in front of us. Chef brought out an amazing off-menu dish and followed it up with his own rigatoni. You can't beat the view, but the dining experience Chef G and his staff have created is well worth trying out. Chef G greeted us at the door, came out and explained every course, and most importantly, cares about what he's doing. We came with two kids (8 and 5) and they loved their our courses as well. If you want a place where you can taste the love Chef G puts into his work, this is a must-try.
One of the best Italian restaurants in Newport. Throw in the setting and service, top notch!
Great location, good food and desserts. Lovely view.
Disappointing food and atmosphere.
Great food with a great location/view to match - Eggs Benedict on the downstairs patio and was a good value for the money. Definitely looking forward to going back for dinner
A group of us came here for my birthday and the experience was perfect. We had a table with a view, were greeted by both the manager and Mr. G himself and brought a delicious complimentary gnocchi appetizer while waiting for our food. Everything we ordered was outstanding!! Only downside was that our waitress was new & couldn’t answer any questions for us. Silver lining was more time with Mr. G who was a wealth of knowledge on his own dishes :) We will definitely be back!!
Food was outstanding as usual, the environment doesn’t match the food. It’s either a restaurant or a dj bar. The two don’t work.
Would never believe this was the same restaurant that used to be on Balboa Island, terrible meal in all regards. So sad to see them slide, will not return.
We visited Giuseppe‘s new place on the water. And it’s a great location. It was a little quiet tonight we were there but I think it’s just because people haven’t really captured the quality of the food or the potential service yet. We had a great time, talk to Giuseppe and he said out a wonderful appetizer complements of him. And then we tried three or four different items which were great. The presentation of the Caesar salad was amazing. Very unique and we really liked it. Mike the bartender was spot on in regards to providing a service, edges that we spent some time with us as well telling us about the food and the excitement of being in a new location. We will be going back and trying new things, I recommend it to you as well.
The food was good as always but they need to do something about the decor. I know it is a new location it seems a little cold in there.
Terrible experience. The staff was so unorganized and unhelpful. The food was very expensive and didn’t even taste good, our waitress forgot to bring our drinks multiple times. I ordered a burger and it came with such a small portion of fries that I had to order another side..... see picture.
We had a great time at brunch. The food was great, mimosas we always full, and the view was prefect!
15 minutes to get water
30 minutes to get our drinks
1 hour for our mains (pasta, fish, 2 burgers)
1:15 for the vegetable that should have been w/ meal.
20 min for desserts (cheesecake)
Food was very good... The service sucked with no apologies.
we have been going to Mr G's on the island for years so happy this opened closer to us. Although soft opening so we expected some delays, staff was brought over from old restaurant so shouldn't have had issues. Orders were wrong we were charged for an item we didn't order waiter didn't come around or seem to care. Would think they would have comped something based on all the errors that night. Others were getting up and leaving so we were not alone. disappointing, also the bar crowd that comes in later is not what Mr. G former customers are use too.
Great food and service and view. G is a great guy! We all enjoyed ourselves!
Wow, they sure dropped the ball when the moved to the Peninsula. All four pasta dishes were loaded with excess salt and service was incredibly slow. Mr G's used to be a good spot.
I did love the food. No processed food-everything home cooked. Portions are pretty small and they were out of bread and salad cost extra. I only got 10 rigatoni and definitely expected more. I would go back for a brunch. Yet, the quality and taste of the food was fantastic.
