Mr. Chow - Malibu Ratings and Reviews
It was a perfect night in Malibu for some Chow- and the food and service were the best we’ve ever had at this remote Chinese restaurant in a high end shopping center in Malibu. The stars were out, the stars (well, a few of them) were there too, and there was nothing to spoil the view. Incredible spare ribs, great bar, try the duck and definitely make your own special menu.
Caution - this is for the 1%ers, but still less expensive and less aggressive than Nobu.
Great way to experience the country village life of the ‘Bu
I have eaten at Mr. Chow in Miami and in Las Vegas… Often tell my friends that Mr. chow is my favorite restaurant in the US… I travel internationally quite extensively and have dined in some wonderful restaurants. I was disappointed in Mr. chow Malibu and cannot recommend it. I created high expectations for my guests. The duck was very dry… The Xiao Long Bao was also dry ( not soupy inside) The squid ink noodles were way overcooked. It was a slow night there and we had a party of 7. With three very large men and four slight Asians… I pointed out to the hostess that the round table was quite small for the size of our party… She said in quite a dismissive way, that the table “would do” and we wouldn’t have a problem. At the time of our 730 reservation on a Monday night there was only one other table seated… We could’ve been moved just about anywhere. Through the course of our to our meal there were a total of three other tables sat. We spilled the one glass of wine and we’re constantly shuffling glasses and entrées to make room… Just not a comfortable table for the size of our party.
The food and service were outstanding. Having eaten at the Mr. Chow in NYC, I can say the service was just as good. The food was also of the same quality. We had the duck and everything was perfect. I was worried after having read some of the reviews of this location. But we found it to be a fabulous experience!!
Me Chow has very a nice Chinese menu and the service and setting are great. HOWEVER, the prices are absolutely outrageous! $41 for a small a la carte plate of what is essentially orange chicken?! $17.50 for a bowl of steamed rice! The tab for my family of four was $340 before tip. This was for four appetizers and three entrees. My wife had one glass of wine and I had one beer. Crucifyingly expensive for food that is marginally superior to what we would get at PF Chang's. If you want a nice dinner in the Country Mart, I would stick with one of the other options if you care at all about value for money.
I remember that the New York location fondly. This Malibu location, though beautiful on the inside ( it's located in a strip mall) was ridiculously over priced for the food they are serving. The table service was spot on and I feel like we ordered correctly , based on servers recommendations. The food began to arrive little by little, and I mean the actual entrees came randomly throughout the dinner. There flat water was $20 bottles of Fiji water which of course they failed to mention. It was extremely quiet that night to the point of concern....Thursday night in Malibu? Overall , probably better to get a drink at the bar and skip the food. The local Chinese in Del Mar has far better menu items with flavor far beyond Mr Chows. It's like they purposefully made the food bland for their locals. It's a shame.
Horrible and abusive service. Complained to the GM who was even more insulting. Several guests were stunned by the staff abuse. Perfect combination of arrogance and incompetence. Avoid (unless you like to pay handsomely for abusive service).
My husband and I went to Mr Chow's for restaurant week. We had high expectations. Boy, were we disappointed. Bland Chinese food if you could call it Chinese. We ordered the Mr. Chow noodles which were over cooked and pork ribs as an appetizer. The noodles looked like spaghetti with meat sauce with a sesame flavor. The ribs were horrible. They were like jerky, extremely dry and tasted terrible. We had to send them back. Our entrees had very little Asian flavor and were bland. The portions were very small for the price. I don't know how they stay in business serving this pricy and awful food.
From the moment we arrived until the time we left, we were cared for - in the seating, in the impeccable and inconspicuous service, in the exquisite and creative cuisine, and in the privacy to enjoy the company of one another. If we won the lottery (although the prix fixe menu is a great value), it would be a weekly treat - for an occasion, it should be at the top of your list of gastronomic delights to savor, to remember.
