Moxie the Restaurant - Cleveland Ratings and Reviews
Not bad, but probably won't go back. Calamari appetizer was excellent, as was the bread and hummus served with the meal (though we had to ask for it a couple times before our server finally brought it). Our server was a little too absent for my liking - wish he had checked in with us a few more times. My wife and I both ordered lamb - I had the lamb shank and she had the lamb filet. They were so-so - they both tasted fine but didn't really stand out. The cocktails and wine were very good. Desert was excellent - went with the s'mores bomb and a chocolate cookie. Including one drink for each of us, it cost about $150 - not really worth going back for just an "okay" experience.
Moxie has always been a good restaurant. We just had a terrible visit the last time we were there. The host/hostess did not seat properly and instead of alternating sections, he/she seated 1 section at a time, so the servers got slammed all at one time. We waited an hour for our food. No server was truly committed to us. Our server even said he felt terrible. No one asked if we wanted another drink, until we were finished with our meal - I would have had one with my meal. The manager came by as well and comped us for certain items, however I will not be rushing back. We wanted to go for a quick bite and it was just a terrible experience.
Food was good. We went there since it was restaurant week. The restaurant week menu was very limited. My husband got it and I did not. My entrée was delicious, salmon with a spatzle. Restaurant was way too noisy. Why even play music when you can't hear it. Wine by the glass too limited and too expensive, e.g. 2 choices for pinot noir one at $20 and one at $13. Really? And service was average. Servers were very apologetic. I wouldn't go back.
Moxie was my favorite restaurant! Unfortunately, the service is no longer the word that can be affiliated with Moxie. I am extremely upset it since Moxie was always the place where you can have a great food paired with profesoonal service, not the case anymore. The norm now is the waiter/waitress who is not trained and does not care ....so how can you continue to be loyal when there is no reciprocation ?!
Moxie was very accommodating to our business dinner, especially given that a few of us arrived a half an hour late. Service was outstanding. Food was great. Menu has a lot of choices while remaining distinctive and fresh. My out of town colleagues really liked the place too.
Always consistent quality of food and wonderful service. Long time menu items are fantastic like the moxie burger, B&E chicken (although they have now made this a half chicken item only so it takes 40 minutes to prepare which is inconvenient) and, for dessert, the baked hot chocolate.
We recently dined at Moxie on a Saturday night and while it was busy, it was not full. Nevertheless we had a long wait for a server to appear, then still longer for our drinks to arrive and overall 40 minutes until we finally ordered dinner. The calamari was excellent, the tuna entree was good but nothing special, the chocolate chip cookie was warm and delicious. The manager however, was very responsive when she rounded at our table and comp'd our drinks. Given the price paid for dinner though, there are better options for overall experience in the vicinity.
We decided to go with an old favorite that we hadn't been to for a while. Moxie continues to be a really good Cleveland restaurant amid a lot of really good competition. The amazing thing is that they've maintained their energy, creativity and quality consistently for a long time. It was good to be back. We both had the same thing - their calamari app (very nice!) followed by pan-roasted duck breast with kimchi fried rice. The duck breast was served perfectly rare. The kimchi fried rice was mind-blowing. I gotta figure out how to make this at home! They were busy on a Friday night, so service was a little slow, but engaging and attentive. I used to work just around the corner, so Moxie was a fairly regular stop for me. I think I'll need to find more excuses to make it a regular stop, again.
The food is very good. Noise level high. Entry desk was manned by 3 youngsters who may have been related to upper management to get their jobs. Wait person seemed spacey rather than incompetent. She wanted to tell us the specials before we had a drink. The atmosphere is more like the restaurant let you in to see how great they are.
Met a business partner for lunch. My first time to Moxie in the 12 years I've lived in Cleveland...don't ask me how because I drive past it almost daily. Food and service was fine. My only complaint was the napkins. Yes. I said napkins. Both myself and guest were wearing dark colored suits and the white napkins left lint ALL over both of us. Not just a little here and there but literally all over my slacks, shirt and suit jacket. Luckily I didn't have clients to see after. Maybe they keep a lint roller at the hostess stand?
Otherwise a great meal.
The kitchen tries to do too much with some of the meals to be "different" but it doesn't always work. Like oysters with hot Asian sauce served on top of each oyster-who would like that? Also, tuna tartar was large with strange tasty chips, but not high quality tuna. Took 15 minutes to get drink out of bar. Due to these issues, settled for a burger for dinner, which I correctly surmised they would prepare flawlessly. This place used to be great, but they need to get back to basics and focus on high quality food and service.
This was our first trip to Moxie and we will definitely return. We were seated immediately. Our waiter was Joseph and he was great. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and all the prep techniques. We never felt rushed. The pace of the meal was perfect and the food was the same. The bar is very intimate and we look forward to having drinks there soon. Wonderful experience!
Well it started out awful... we. Went in at 8 on a Monday night to take advantage of their pizza and 1/2 price bottle if wine. Sounded perfect for an afterwork on the light side dinner. When the waitress came over to get our order she told us there is no more pizza. WHAT?!?! How can it be continuously advertised and then run out by 8! We suggested she tell the manager that's no way to run a business. We then asked for the full wine list. It didn't come and a bit later we got a new waiter. He apologized profusely, felt our pain re the pizza and went to retrieve the wine list. While he was gone the chef came out. He still has 2 pizza doughs.. do we want them. We chose one plus a salad. We got our list and ordered our dinner. The wine was fabulous... the pizza came and it was not fully cooked. The crust fell off the bottom. Waiter came back.. was terribly apologetic and took the pizza back.... a bit later the chef himself came out with a new correctly cooked pizza and could not stop apologizing. Thank goodness no one had ordered a pizza after us! Shortly after, the manager came out... more apologies... we said it was almost comical and at this point as upset as we were, we had to laugh. To make it right... all we paid for was our delicious wine. It was delicious and we were made 'whole'. We have been before and we will go back... but if this were to heaven forbid happen again, I'm not sure there would be another time.
We sat at the bar. Service was non-existent. I had to go
to a nearby table to get napkins and silverware. Then we
had to beg for bread that should have been automatically delivered. No one ever checked to see if we
wanted drink refills or anything else while we were there.
As an aside, the bar back was a mess.
An additional issue is the temperature in the restaurant
hovered around sub-freezing.
All in all a waste of time and $$$.
Excellent consistency with the food and with the menu. The specials are worth trying but the tried and true items like the burger and the B&E chicken are great. The desserts are fabulous too. The baked hot chocolate is a must have and the cookies are a close second if you are a chocolate lover.
The interior atmosphere was quiet (empty) due to diners enjoying the summer evening on the patio. The interior was inviting with relaxed lighting, contrasted with the crisp appearance of white linens and well-set tables throughout. The reception was prompt and professional and 2 of the 4 present were promptly seated. The others were integrated and served shortly after they arrived. The patio is relatively narrow and adjacent to the parking lot, which made it somewhat noisy. The service felt a bit edgy and rushed and items didn't arrive as timely as expected. The quality of the food and the presentation was very good. Forgiving what I feel was an off night on service, overall a good experience which will keep it on my list of favorites.
