Yet another transformation of a traditionaL fine dining room into a communal, plate-sharing ,
bar-like, noisy pub. The evening started with a waiter who was so annoying that he could ruin anyone's meal. His use of wait-speak and mangling of the english langauge was epic. We ordered a kale salad which was awful. The promised ingredients were barely present and the dressing was a tasteless milky water. There were no serving utensils despite the fact that it was supposed to be a shared plate. As we were half way through the salad, the waiter brought the black cod mains we had ordered. The waiter could not understand why that there might be a problem. The fish was mediocre. The apple crumble for dessert was sweet glop with tasteless ice cream. Tragic evening.
Excited to see the redo, but sorry to report decor not to our liking but then we liked it before. Sorry to react to menu in similar fashion. Fallback hamburger ordered but hard to enjoy an overcooked $21 burger with replacement for tepid fries not arriving until burger was consumed. Waiter had indicated choice of salad or fries but bill turned out to be plus $4 for fries.
We were told that this is a new/reconfigured restaurant within the beautiful Phoenician resort. The staff is welcoming and we only waited for a couple of minutes to be seated after arriving at the hostess stand. Our waiter, Luis, was knowledgeable and went out of his way to accommodate our party of five and their desires. We were there on Thanksgiving and diners had the choice to enjoy the “Thanksgiving Feast” which was truly bounteous! It started with buttermilk buns with two types of butter: duck fat and citrus. It also came with some petite olives and pickles and was DELICIOUS! The next course was two salads - a wild rice and apple salad and a kale and butternut salad - both very good. Following the salad was guanciale wrapped dates and carmelized cauliflower - creative and tasty. On to the entrees...Herb roasted turkey, whole roasted striped bass, wild mushroom stuffing (delicious) and a roasted squash dish that our vegetarian daughter-in-law LOVED.
The finale to a tremendous quantity of culinary effort was an array of small pumpkin and pecan tarts. At $58 per person, it was a lot of quality cuisine. However, after the first two courses, the food arrived VERY slowly and not all of the ‘hot’ items were hot. We were there over three hours and about half of the time was spent waiting. Our waiter really seemed like he was hustling so the holdup might have been in the kitchen.
All in all, we will give them a second chance.
This was for an early brunch for 4 on Thanksgiving. Food was very very good but we waited while they seated walkins for breakfast way past our reservation time and then the food was very slow coming from kitchen. We had a 10:30 reservation and were still waiting for any food at 1140. The wait staff was pleasant and apologetic and the manager comped our meal so they did try to make up for it. But when we were first seated a table of 5 near us burst into cheers and applause saying “finally our food” so I don’t think it was just us. This could be because it was Thanksgiving and the food was great so if I had plenty of time I might try it again.
This restaurant is part of the wonderful Phoenician resort. Overlooking the pool complex it offers very interesting and innovative small plate and shared fare, with great twists on foods, lots of unusual presentations, superb combination of tastes and ingredients. Our wait for drinks was a bit slow, but after that things moved right along. the buttermilk biscuits are great, chopped salad with pheasant very good, we enjoyed the carpaccio and lamb tacos. If there is a criticism, small, that it is, is that they overuse the pickled vegetables with too many dishes. Of course we didn’t have to eat them too, which we did, but with every dish it was somewhat surprising. Well made drinks, wines are limited but of high quality.
Perfect dining experience with great food and service by David along with his team. The menu is well-balanced and vegetarian friendly with several delicious options like smoked beets! We ordered and would suggest trying the mushroom flatbread , scallops, butternut salad and buttermilk bread.
We sat outdoor on the patio and enjoyed the beautiful November evening weather, albeit the lights were a little bright. Dinner was for business but I will be back with the family and friends- I would definitely recommend Mowry Cotton for other occasions, especially larger group since their concept is communal dining.
We celebrated my birthday at Mowry and Cotton with my family including a couple of kiddos. The staff were all very attentive, patient, and kind to our group. My husband even arranged a cake for my bday and the restaurant was accommodating. Sarah was incredible and the other servers were so friendly too. She answered all our questions and was great. The food was delicious and I’ve already recommended it to others!
Originally sat outside which was a mistake. Looks like a picnic area. Very bright with uncomfortable chairs. Large group sat next to us with several very unhappy children. Seating inside the restaurant was much better. We are glad we stayed as the food was very good and server was excellent.
We celebrated my birthday dinner and had a wonderful experience from start to finish. Our server was passionate, fun and very informed about the food and their creative cocktails and we had so much fun talking about the menu.
We ended up choosing the semolina bread with crab dip (amazing!!!), roasted squash (served with whipped feta - OMG!), smoked spare ribs with a snap pea slaw and the whole striped bass to share. My son ordered the kids chicken and waffles which was super creatively served with waffle bites in a waffle cone, along with fries. The food came out perfectly, super flavorful, creative and we just loved everything we had. We will definitely be back to try other delicious menu choices. And soon!
