This is an OK neighborhood restaurant, I would not go out of your way to eat here ever. I have eaten here several times - some better than others. This particular time the wait was horrendous for dinner (50mins) and the food mediocre. They offered us a free glass of wine, which we didn't want and no discount or anything else!
Mourayo consistently has delicious and authentic high quality Greek food. If you are in search of good food rather than fast food, it should be on your radar.
The menu id getting better all the time, with lots of veggie options but still plenty for meat/fish eaters. Ambiance is just delightful. A cozy place with the hardest of all joys to find in a restaurant--low noise levels. You can be intimate here while enjoying incredible tastes.
.Some of the food was very good, but one of the appetizers and one of the entrees were much too salty
The ambiance in the restaurant is nice and homely, though the lighting was rather dark over some of the tables. The place is clean and the food tasted fresh (except for the scallops which tasted like they were previously frozen) and made to order. The appetisers were tasty (especially the octopus) but not exceptional. The pasta with shrimp was very good. Unfortunately, the entrees (especially the scallops with black eyed peas) were incredibly salty. Limited options for wine by the glass (and expensive at $12 for mediocre white). Since the service was so slow (which was odd as the restaurant was not very full) we declined dessert. Overall it was a decent experience but nothing to write home about, and with a check coming out at over $100 for two (1.5 starters; 2 mains; 2 glasses of wine), it is not good enough value for money for us to rush back.
I have been coming to Mourayo for the past 4 or 5 years, at least once a year for special occasions. The menu is simple and their food has remained consistent and delicious. I always look forward to visiting and enjoying a nice glass of wine!
Moussaka and Monkfish both excellent and very Greek 😋
A true jewel. With so many options in DC dining scene it took me 2 years to come back and I realized it was a mistake. Every single dish my friends and I (we were 8) was spectacular.
Very noisy, light bulb out above table. Service ok but eveyone seemed very rushed.
Dining at Mourayo is always a pleasure. Efficient service, waiter was knowledgeable about ingredients for someone with food allergies, food was delicious. It was a great place to bring guests to showcase some of the best food in Washington.
I like the authentic Greek flavors. Not watered down or Americanized. Always very good. Always good service. I'll be back.
Entrees took over an hour. Staff never told us why.
If I want to dine on delicious high-end Greek food affordably, Mourayo is where I go. Fabulous fresh whole fish, or the delightful "Pythagoras" of figs, almonds, honey and pork loin, or delicate combinations of Branzino filet with fennel. Mourayo is consistently fabulous, affordable and the service is akin to being a guest in someone's home.
A very well known classical musician from Paris always comes here when in town: it's that good.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. Everything we ordered was delicious and carefully prepared. The service was excellent as well and the food was reasonably priced. The Greek wine list is impressive . . .our wine was exactly what we wanted. We highly recommend Mourayo!
As soon as we ordered a bottle of wine the warm pita with evoo came out. We had the grilled octopus with fava bean puree, crabmeat and cheese pie, and roasted eggplant salad to start. The flavors were wonderful, the grilled octopus was cooked perfectly, tender and not rubbery at all. I had the mousaka and my wife and friend each had the pork with figs, almonds, cheese and honey sauce. We couldn't have been happier with our food or the service. Our orders were taken and filled efficiently, plates were removed properly and the service was unobtrusive, yet friendly. Desert was very good, but not spectacular. I would readily recommend this restaurant for those who love food, want good service, and enjoy being able to talk without shouting.
When in the area I always try to go to Mourayo. The food is excellent, service attentive - the yogurt is always a standout as is the hummus plate. A friend did a repeat on the pork tenderloins and my black pasta with shrimp was so good that a friend kept reaching over for bites.
What an amazing experience! I haven't had such a fabulous meal since I was in Greece! Natalina Koropoulos and her team have created a full dining experience. The food, the service the attention is James Beard worthy!
A gem in DC! Great ambiance for a nice dinner with professional colleagues. All around lovely experience!
Excellent Greek food along with a great Greek wine selection. New dishes have been added to the menu such as the "Lamb in parchment paper" which I have never come across in another Greek restaurant in the US. The octopus appetizer is always a big hit! And the wide choice of grilled Mediterranean fish such as bronzino and sea bream are always prepared in an exquisite manner. Lastly, the selection of deserts, including the recently added cheese-cake with masticha flavor is great. I have been going to this restaurant for several years now and have never been disappointed.
The grilled octopus is must have! We keep coming back for it because you can't find better anywhere else!
It's often hard to find authentic Greek food, but not at Mourayo. We enjoyed the octopus Mourayo, two preparations and a delicious fava puree. The eggplant salad was scrumptious and beautifully presented, accompanied by thin, warm pita. A true Greek salad -- no lettuce! The lavraki (bronzino) was perfectly cooked, and the squid ink pasta with shrimp as well. The wine offerings are Greek and nicely accompanied the food. We were full but shared Aphrodite's Dream, real Greek yogurt covered with Greek honey and walnuts. Delicious! Service was impeccable and unobtrusive. And it was wonderful to be in a restaurant where it was possible to hold a conversation without raising one's voice. Can't wait to return to DC for another dinner there.
I have been there several times before. But not in a long time. I was not happy with the food choices and I did not think the food was that great.
We are Greek and this was a delightful way to spend an evening.
I had only eaten lunch there and enjoyed the meal. However when I had dinner after the Inauguration, it was packed and very noisy. The food is good. The service was a little disorganized bit understandable. I would definite recommend it for lunch.
This is a Greek restaurant with authentic Greek dishes cooked in people's homes and fancy restaurants, not your run-of-the-mill ordinary gyros and Kebabs. The food is delicious and of the highest quality, much of it imported from family and friends of the owner who live in Greece. It is a small, special quiet restaurant.
Mourayo is an excellent Greek restaurant, it is quiet and refined. The wait staff is super attentive - glasses are refilled before we realize we need more and the bread baskets are replenished before the last piece is lifted out by a diner. Attention to detail here is excellent. The food is delicious and presentation is very well executed. Wait staff will warn you about the 30 minute wait for chicken, so although it is worth waiting for, if you have to be somewhere at a certain time, choose something else. The recommendation of the sampler appetizer by our server was spot on - every little selection was excellent. At Mourayo you will find Greek food at its best.
Not a hotspot anymore, just good food ...the salt encrusted Bronzino
Classic, elegant dining experience. Try the Dorade packed and baked in salt for a unique presentation and an especially delicious treat.
Delightful dining experience. Interesting wines, mild retsina was lovely. The dip sampler was more than enough on its own for the three of us with a chickpea "paste" that was very different. The grilled octopus in ink was delicious and the calamari in pesto was fresh, delicious and a different take on an old staple. I ordered the whole fish and was dissuaded from having it baked in salt by our waiter; grilled with herbs, the fish fell off the bone so it was good advice. We had the sampler dessert which, again, was more than enough but was just ok...three different versions of a plain cake. The servers were attentive, the atmosphere was quaint and the prices were moderate. It was a pleasant dining experience and an unusual Greek meal. We'll definitely be back.
Greek cooking with a flare. Worth trying and revisiting.
Outstanding restaurant. Wonderful Greek and Mediterranean menu.
I've mostly had good experiences here, but they really dropped the ball when I brought my husband in for his birthday. His lamb chops were tasteless & hadn't been seasoned--as were the fingerling potatoes they came with. The portion was also more suitable for a appetizer than an entree. If you come in, skip the lamb chops and get the lamb stew--a consistently good dish there.
They outdid themselves, so delicious and so pleasant!
i recommend the shrimp appetizer and especially the octopus in squid ink
portions for entres are somewhat large, so consider ordering fewer than one per person and sharing
While our friends had raved about this restaurant, and the food was moderately tasty, the overall experience was disappointing due to the poor service.
The food was just ok. I was led to believe it would be better. We were visiting from out of town. Here is our main complaint. The taste of the water. There was something in it. Almost like a dish soap after taste. We could not get anyone to understand. I guess we should have complained louder.
We have had better meals here and were a little disappointed in this dinner. We ordered the special - squid, mussels, monkfish and shrimp over black and white orzo. Portion was small and not so fresh. We also ordered the vegetarian dish, which was quite interesting - beets, eggplant, oyster mushrooms, broad beans and cheese. In prior visits we had the fish baked in salt which is very special. Not sure if this was just a bad night.
I am a long-time customer, and service has fallen off over the past couple of years. I went with a friend, and we couldn't get in before 5:30 pm, though the website said 5:00 pm opening, and no hours were posted on the restaurant itself. When we got in, staff were still setting up and there was no music. We had lukewarm wine at the bar, and the server didn't know what the drink I wanted was. We had to flag down the server continually during dinner, though there were few customers. Food was okay, not as good as it used to be. I had recommended Mourayo to my friend, and by the end of the meal was embarrassed. I won't return.
Local place. Nothing fancy but good down to earth food and service.
We love Greek food, but are tired of the same old thing. The food at Mourayo was excellent. The appetizers are fantastic and the wine was a particularly great value. We would highly recommend this restaurant if you want great high-end Greek food at a great price. It is a great place to entertain clients!
