Mountain House - Woodside Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary. We had seen The Mountain House on Check, Please on PBS and were intrigued by the location and view of the redwoods. It was a long drive from San Jose, but well worth it. The service was impeccable and the food was outstanding. We were seated in the back room with full views of the redwoods. We will definitely be back.
we had a wonderful meal, i had the salmon special cooked to perfection and my husband had the skirt steak also very, very good and very generous portions. We started with the house salad love the fried chick peas. Chris our waiter was great, everything brought at just the right time and friendly service. And, of course its so beautiful in the woods, beautiful views. love coming here
We had a reservation and we're seated right away. Our waiter admitted off the bat he was new, we told him it was our first time at Mountain House so we didn't have anyone to compare him to.
We started with drinks and appetizers and our waiter was patient while we looked over the menu and chatted. My husband ordered skirt steak and I got the shrimp and scallops.
Our food arrived and everything was beautifully presented. The steak was perfectly cooked, and the shrimp were a nice texture. I noticed my second bite that I was given the wrong meal. I asked our server if it was the primavera which he answered it was. I reminded him I hadn't ordered primavera and he took it away.
While he fixed my meal, it was disappointing that he confused the only two pastas on the menu. The other disappointment was that my husband's meal got totally cold while he waited for me to get the correct entree.
We ordered peach cobbler for dessert and it was delicious. Fresh peaches, creamy ice cream, it doesn't get much better. Overall it was a good dining experience. Would go back.
Overall we like MH, and the staff is in general very friendly. Sadly our waiter and food were not up to standards this visit. Waiter was friendly but unsophisticated and poorly trained for a white-table cloth establishment. The ambience of being in the middle a forest is quite pleasant and different, and while dining in the atrium gives a greater feeling of "being in the trees", the inside near the fireplace is more romatic and intimate. The Tuscan salad was so sour we could only eat a couple bites before setting it aside, and told the waiter so. The waiter should have asked if we would like a replacement salad, but did not. Nor did he take the cost of the salad off the bill. We should have asked for either a replacement salad or a refund but did not, expecting the final bill would be adjusted which did not happen. My wife's veal strip steak was very tough, difficult to cut, though properly cooked medium rare. I would not recommend either the Tuscan salad or veal. However my elk medallions were superb and highly recommended. We will return, as we enjoy the ambience though we are not in a hurry to return.
We took my mom here for her 84th birthday. I was a bit dubious at first because I'm a pescatarian, and this place is known for meat (the special was elk). Also driving 40 minutes from Palo Alto for dinner wasn't on my bucket list.
It was a blistering hot day (topping 110 degrees!) and there was no A/C, so that was a bit difficult to handle, but not their fault. Woodside is not known for a place where A/C is often needed.
I was pleasantly surprised. The food and service were great. I had three appetizers, as did my husband. So between the two of us: popcorn shrimp, bleu cheese salad, corn fritters, Buratta/heirloom tomato salad, and gazpacho. My mom had the bone marrow followed by the rack of lamb. My dad had the pork chop. I didn't sample any of my parents' food but they are foodies and said everything was excellent. Our food was also great. My mom and I shared a creme brûlée, which was perfect.
I'll go back when it's not 110 degrees!
Hosted an out of town friend and had ample good food just sticking with several starters, gazpacho, and salads along with wine and dessert. The only damper was the weather...think it got up to around 106 degrees at the King's Mountain Fair that we had attended. The fan in the dining room and open windows helped a little...but the place was pretty warm.
The restaurant is in a very nice setting. The staff is nice and friendly. One might say it's a little quirky, but it's definitely welcoming.
Unfortunately, the quality of the the food was not to the level expected. We had to send back one dish because the main ingredient was cold. Another dish was barely edible. We had four entrées total, so two for four is not a very good ratio.
I liked the atmosphere. I appreciated the staff, but I don't believe I would go back.
Fabulous entree - grilled halibut with Orange Ginger sauce over risotto. Perhaps this was the the most delicious fish entree I've ever eaten....beautiful presentation, perfectly grilled with unique and delicate flavors in the orange ginger sauce. Marvelous. Add in the vision of the redwoods, lit in the night sky, overhead..... Nothing could be better!!
I've eaten at the Mountain House many times. If you want a leisurely dinner (2.5 hours), then eat in the back. The food is good, the atmosphere great and you can hear people talk. The servers are lovely: friendly, non-intrusive, and yet still attentive. It's kind of like eating in Europe where SLOW dining is de rigueur. But for us, it was too slow and somewhat overpriced as well. If you want to eat faster, don't make a reservation but go for the bar food up front. The Mountain House is truly a local bar with a nice fire, good bar food, a great bar, and a community atmosphere. So yes, I recommend the Mountain House but only for an event with a slow meal.
Another great dinner at the Mountain House. We had just gotten back from a long trip and my son's first request was to go to the Mountain House for dinner. Sitting surrounded by Redwood trees while having a delicious dinner was just what we needed to feel back at home.
Love the Mountain House Food and service is always great. The glass in dinning room offers great views of the Redwoods. One problem was the table next to us with two 10-14 year old kids that had NO manors at all and the parents should have been asked to leave. I don't understand parents that can't or will not demand children of this age behave. Screaming and tossing food all over the place and playing video games took away form my evening.
All our meals arrived promptly after cocktails.
Wade & the other wait staff was very attentive and made sure we had everything including 2 baskets of bread. My veal was done perfectly as was the other
dishes of rack of lamb, cod, and shrimp/scallop pasta. We all had deserts as well-warm peach cobbler, flourless brownie, blueberry/raspberry parfait. No leftovers
there either. Good job!
This is an A++++ restaurant. We often order from the "Specials" menu and have never been disappointed. The Mountain House offers a rare opportunity to dine at a place with so much natural beauty - in the Garden Room under the redwoods, or, in the dining room that features antiques, a cozy fireplace, and old-style elegance. The chef is fantastic. Presentation is "spot on". Service is gracious and friendly. The "cowboy" bar in the front is a fun first stop with excellent bartenders who are good and friendly. It's my favorite pick for a night out! I really feel that I've been in a special place.
The sunroom Is a wonderful dining experience. It was my fathers 91st birthday. Even he thought the space made you feel as if you were dining perched in a treehouse in the forest. The food and the service were excellent. Mountain House is definitely a place to go for that special occasion.
Have never been disappointed. Food well presented and delicious. Staff are courteous, efficient and our table waiter very knowledgeable about menu and answering questions. Forest room is a beautiful environment. This is a restaurant that we keep coming back to.
I loved it.Had the Salmon special and cooked to perfection. The cocktails from the bar outstanding the waiter the bartenders and the bussers were friendly and right there if you needed anything. It was a special night for my wife and I,it was our 27 wedding anniversary and couldn't have asked for a better evening.Thank you Mountain House
Poblano chile appetizer is out of this world; the ahi was cooked to perfection. Servers were sufficiently attentive without hovering. We ate in the sunroom and it was nice to look out at the redwood trees as we dined. Noticed there was no music. Something playing softly in the background would have been nice.
My wife and I had dinner here. First, we split the BLT salad which we both liked a lot.
She ordered the King Salmon entrée which she thought was excellent. She also liked the accompanying mashed potatoes and vegetables, but was unhappy with the fact that the sauce wasn't served on the side.
I ordered the roast chicken entrée. The chicken was covered with a very tasty sauce that included Kalimata olives and was served with polenta and vegetables consisting of cooked carrots and zucchini. Unfortunately, I didn't like either the polenta or the vegetables. The polenta was white and not grainy, as opposed to traditional yellow polenta made from corn meal that I like very much.
