Morton's The Steakhouse - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
When you dine in what is expected to be a "special" restaurant (by reputation), you anticipate a fantastic evening. Nothing at all impressed us about our visit to Morton's Steakhouse in San Francisco. The food arrived so rapidly that we were barely able to let the wine breathe, and then it arrived luke warm. The ambiance is dark, but not in a pleasant or romantic way, just dark, and certainly not special. We felt hurried as if turning the table over was the most important thing. We received our check 50 minutes after our arrival time. Not what I'd call a relaxing dining experience! Spending $250 on a meal should at least bring some joy with it. Not here I'm afraid!
We had a number of very fine dinners in Napa Valley, and as we came back to the city, Morton’s was a great place to have our last dinner on the west coast. A truly great meal! The sea bass dish my wife had was the best she had ever had, and my filet mignon was excellent. We will definitely go back many times.
We had a wonderful meal here prior to attending a show at the San Francisco playhouse. There were plenty of options on the menu for starters, and the ones we tried (bacon wrapped scallops and Caesar salad) were very tasty. We all ordered steak (of course) and were happy with how they were cooked. All the side dishes were fantastic, highly recommend the brussel sprouts and potatoes au gratin. Desserts were also a hit, the chocolate lava cake was excellent but be aware you have to allow 30 minutes for it to be prepared (we ordered before we received our main course). Our server was excellent, just attentive enough, know the menu very well and wasvery personable. We informed her that we were attending the show and she did a great job of ensuring we got through our meal in time to make it there. All in all, a great dining experience!
We dined for my husbands birthday- as we do every year- and this year we had our two sons along. We made reservations 3 weeks ahead of time, letting the hostess know we would require a high chair as our youngest is 10 months old. We arrived and I asked just to make sure that we were seated at a table that was able to have a high chair- only to be told we could only have a booster seat, at any table in the restaurant. We were sat at our table and greeted by a server who gave off the vibe that he was already annoyed even before speaking to us. Throughout the dinner he was short and cold towards us. I did not expect the restaurant or server to be accommodating to us since we had children, but I did expect them to be friendly- which they were not. The manager greeted my husband and said he “knows how it goes” since he has children our age, but our server obviously did not. Sadly disappointed this time around!
For a steak house it was good, but nothing special. The meat was a little less than I expected. Our waiter was great considering how busy it was, but the food was nothing special. For a $200 dinner for two my expectations were higher. If the steak had been great my review would be better.
Total Fail! Thanksgiving dinner - should be special....It started with the hostess pulling out our table and us seeing all kinds of dirty napkins, baby bib and food all under the table and on the seating. We pointed this out to the hostess and she states 'Oh, poor baby doesn't have a bib now'. We order. We specifically order the mix grill that has the SALMON filet as I do not eat red meat. 1st course - Ahi Tower - mediocre at best - very wet tasting. Nothing special. Main course - we were going to share the mixed grill and a beet/goat cheese salad. Dinner shows up - it is a filet mignon...we look at the server and say we specifically ordered the SALMON...instead of offering to change, fix, etc he proceeds to dig through his order book so he can blame us for ordering incorrectly. My husband is very hungry at this point and we say fine! So, for Thanksgiving I had a salad and 2 shrimp!
Next up - you have to order some of the desserts early - about once a decade my husband orders a chocolate souffle.
Service to now has been so- so.....
The souffle shows up - it is disgusting - you can smell the eggs from across the table - there is no chocolate - it is white with a dusting of cocoa powder over the top. The waiter man handles the souffle trying to get a presentation on the plate - my husband takes one bite and says this is not edible. There is no chocolate, no chocolate sauce and it is a big white glutinous mess. The server comes back - we tell him we can't eat this - he says 'yea, don't know how anyone can, it disgusts me'
Prior to dessert showing up - no offer of coffee, an after dinner drink...
Never were we asked was there anything they could do for us to make up for an abysmal experience.....could we waive your corkage fee? is there another dessert that maybe you would care for? NOTHING.....and the prices are outrageous.
Will never go back......Horrible experience
Our waiter Oscar was excellent! We were a large group including kids for Thanksgiving - he was unfailingly pleasant and helpful. The Brussels Sprouts and horseradish mashed potatoes were fantastic - everything was excellent. We had a great time, seated in what felt like our own private dining room even if it was by the aisle and kitchen.
We came her for a special dinner after we got married and it was and amazing experience! The steaks are outstanding, the side dishes are just wonderful and so fresh!! The best part of the night was the molten lava cake♥️. It was one of the best things I have had in my life and the wine selection is huge and they are so delicious.
The manager Clairince was absolutely amazing and so accommodating. Best service in town!!
This dinner was for my boyfriend’s 50th birthday and I had notified the restaurant through my OpenTable reservation. First, I ended up being an hour late for the reservation due to accidents on the Bay Bridge, and when I called the restaurant to notify them they were so accommodating to move the reservation at the last minute. Second, when I finally did arrive the restaurant gave us a wonderful cozy booth, as I had requested, which felt very private and romantic. Lastly, the staff decorated the table with birthday confetti which was a great surprise. As always, the food and service were amazing. We could not have been happier with the entire experience. Thank you so much Morton’s!! You made our night!
We've been to Morton's many times & the last 3-4 times, I have wished the twice baked au gratin potatoes were scalloped, not chunk size-sometimes the chunk of potato isn't soft/cooked fully. It's not as good anymore as when we first went & the potatoes were scalloped, soft & fully cooked - OMG so delicious!!!
Noise level can be a bit loud & difficult to hear the wait staff when they are speaking to you.
The cote de boeof was delicious!! yummy!!
Old School steakhouse. Steaks were great, server was knowledgeable and good, hostess kept seating everybody together even though the whole restaurant was empty. The Somm was a novice, he was literally going to marry two bottles of wine together, one that had been open for several days with a brand new one. Ugh.
My daughter and some friends were spending the night in SF for her 16th birthday, so my wife and i came over too just to be in the area while they did their thing. My father in law had also just survived an extra-delayed flight from Scotland, and we decided that he deserved a big steak. Morton's was close to our hotel, and we've had good experiences there. Once again, this place came through. Great steaks, great sides, great drinks, and great service. Thanks again, and we'll be back!
Our food and table service was exceptional. I only rated 4-stars because the hostesses were apathetic to my mother-in-law who has to use a cane to get around. My husband dropped us off at the front so that he could park the car. Being in the middle of a touristy area in San Francisco, that would take some time. As most of our party was there, we asked to be seated and was told our table was ready, but everyone needed to be there before they would let us sit. We waited in the bar while my mother-in-law stood. A kind gentleman offered his bar stool, but there was no way my MIL could “hop” up and down in her condition. After 10 minutes, my MIL was in pain so my sister-in-law finally speaks to them again so we can be seated. Once at the table, everything was wonderful.
After our meal, my husband & I went to get the car while my MIL waited with my SIL. They asked the hostess if she could have a chair until our car arrived and they would not accommodate her. Luckily the door man saw what was happening and bought a chair our for her. I’d like to thank him for his kindness.
While I do like the Morton’s chain overall, this particular unit continues to disappoint. I suspect that the current manager is keen to show good short-term financial results, but at the expense of ongoing patronage. I’ve dined here perhaps 15 times or more, but would not do so again.
The time before last, I was denied seating at my table, although it was available, until the last of my party arrived. I’ve encountered this rule at no other Morton’s.
At my most recent meal, the Syrah I ordered from the printed wine list was not in stock. My second choice Syrah, of comparable price, was also, curiously, no longer available. Most restaurants, in my experience, apologize and offer a bottle of the same varietal at a higher price point, but charge only at the level of your first choice. (They still profit, of course, given the high mark-up on wines.) Not this Morton’s. The waiter remained stonily silent, and I had to pay much more for a bottle I really did not want.
My advice? Try Alfred’s or another good steakhouse in SF. There are many. But the Morton’s locations elsewhere are still probably good. I doubt that the SF restaurant’s practices reflect a new corporate strategy.
