Mooo Ratings and Reviews
Really wanted to love this restaurant but...did not.Loved the neutral decor. Service spotty and long wait before ordering. ( waiter busy with a big party:() Drinks pricey and just OK. Food not outstanding for the price. We were there celebrating our birthdays and we were ready to enjoy and spend. Sad to say we will not be returning nor recommending this restaurant.
This restaurant was so much better when it was the Federalist. Really it was. The meat theme was pretty pervasive then and now, for some reason, it has to be another steak house in a city already overrun steak houses. The service was really average and the food was good but not great. Have had better steaks and other similar dishes at Mistral and Sorellina...
Lastly, while I was not a huge fan of the decor at the Federalist it was at least interesting. The decor now is bland and dull and the art challenging - I do not need to sit next to calf hide covered pillows and stare into the face of an animal I am about to ingest - a bit morose dont you think? another miss in the JM empire.....
This was my second trip to Mooo. The first was when I used them to host a special breakfast events for about 30 people int heir downstairs private room. That was a great event, very professionally done. This particular time was simply for dinner with a guest. The wait staff are attentive and really understand when to approach the table and when to wait to allow conversation to continue. Food was prepared exceptionally well. My steak was exactly how I asked, the parm potato casserole was the best I've had. In fact, all the sides we ordered were prepared perfectly - crisp vegetables, warm, not overdone. I highly recommend this restaurant.
I feel bad writing this, because I really wanted to be impressed with this restaurant, especially after hearing about all the wonderful things written about the food. My steak was overdone, and was not memorable. The service was spotty, although the wait staff was very nice. Will probably not return to this restaurant.
Overall the meal was delicious. We started with a caesar salad that we expected to "wow" us more. We were surprised that it wasn't topped with fresh anchovies. We both agreed we could have done without the salad course. The hot rolls were exquisite - we are still talking about them! The steaks we ordered and the sides were all delicious, and the drinks were expertly prepared.
We ate at Moo three times over the weekend, the best meal was brunch, it was the most inventive, the weiner schnitzel with fried egg and eggs benedict was wonderful although the Cava in the mimosa was too sweet and the fruit tasted like refridgerator ( not freshly plated). The first dinner with steak was excellent the steak was perfectly prepared and flavorful by far the second best steak I have ever had. The onion rings crisp. The "creamed" spinach was awful, watery with milk and bitter. The second dinner of ceasar salads were perfect in size and taste, but the linguini was al dente ( not asked for) and the sausce had more butter than clams or herbs. Lastly, the service, I am sorry to say is sub par for this restaurant, no bus people.
Really nice dining experience, from the surprisingly inexpensive ($12) parking adjacent to the restaurant (critical on a very cold night in the
middle of a busy downtown Boston) to the welcoming unpretentious staff to the excellent food and wine list. The lighting is a bit low though I generally like low lights. Dessert menu was a disappointment but everything else was great (if pricey). Also, the noise level was too high. We had an elderly person in our group and she had a really hard time keeping up with the conversation because of the noisy background--too many hard surfaces for noise to bounce off of. With the low lights and potentially romantic atmosphere, the restaurant should have a softer sound ambience.
My steak (had the 8 oz filet)was charbroiled and okay at best. Medium rare was a little too overcooked. However, my boyfriend got a medium rare 12 oz filet and his seemed cooked appropriately. The server has zero personality and the wait was LONG in between everything. Recommend ordering all at once! The B & B mushrooms, rolls and calamari were AMAZING. Sadly, the steak wasn't go great.
The worse steak restaurant I've been to in my life. I went with a party of 6 and everybody's steak was cooked incorrectly. The rare steak was medium-rare. All of the other steaks at the table were ordered as medium rare but were cooked at medium well or more. I was the only person who complained. My second steak was rare (I ordered medium rare). Furthermore, one person ordered a cornish hen, which was dry as a bone. I think the chef fell asleep watching the grill.
We ordered the dumpling appetizer which was delicious, then moved on to the filet mignon and and painted hills new york, which were both cooked perfectly. I also enjoyed the nice char on my new york. The sides are gigantic, so believe your server when he/she tells you they are big enough to share. We ended up taking a good bit of our food home which is definitely not a bad thing. Ambiance was great, the space is large so noise wasn't an issue at all. Only thing that fell a bit short for us was our server. He was a bit awkward upon table visits, but that didn't detract from our great overall experience.
Mooo felt like it was aspiring (and priced) to be more than it was. While the sides were excellent, the steaks were dry and could only be called mediocre. The decor was nice but the ambiance was hurt by a large table of three screaming toddlers who, for whatever reason, were seated squarely in the middle of the restaurant. Ending the meal with a delay because the credit card machine wasn't working was not the best icing on the cake.
Excellent lunch date, and for $20.11 you can't beat the 3-course special. The caesar salad was made with real mayonnaise and was creamy and rich - a treat for sure. The weiner schniztel house special was delectably moist with a crisp crust and the accompaniments were wonderul. Very good service and price for a relaxing holiday lunch. Will definitely go back to try the bar menu too.
Food was good -- Appetizers were outstanding but the entrees were not remarkable.
Bread before the meal was fresh and delicious.
Our waiter seemed distracted and he was slow. He mixed up my entree and even though they billed according to the order (not what was delivered) it was a disappointment.
I heard him apologizing at other tables as well so I don't think our experience was unique.
Our eating experience at Mooo is always guaranteed greatness. From the appetizers through to dessert, the nice wine list and beautiful decor makes this one of our favorite restaurants in Boston. Sister restaurants Mistral and Sorellina are also great choices.
Food (we both had steak) was better or at least as good as any Boston Steakhouse. We had an outstanding dining experience. The only downside comment was the lack of organization at the hostess check in station. the had our Open Table reservation, but the wait to hand our coats over to the coat check person, then the hostess finding a person to seat us was much longer than one would expect at a restaurant of this quality. After dining, the time spent retrieving our coats was also a problem.
