Mooncusser Fish House
Superb fish dishes in a lovely fine dining atmosphere. Also, excellent service and really well made cocktails. Highlights: Mooncusser chowder, Spanish mackerel, swordfish and scallops. The desserts were quite special too. An all around great dining experience.
We got the Dine Out menu and enjoyed the tuna pasta and the hake with lentils and red cabbage. It was a quiet night due to Coronavirus, but everyone (servers, bartender) and patrons was observing best practices.
Amazing experience here tonight. The food was incredibly fresh and well prepared. We loved the ceviche and the scallop poke appetizers. The Hake and the special of the night (grey sole with potato, lobster, truffle and squash) were both delicious. We enjoyed every bite. Dessert was also on par with the fish. Great service and a nice quiet setting. I will be back for sure.
What a wonderful place to eat! We stumbled upon Mooncusser Fish House as it was a quick walk from the W Hotel. The oysters were divine, our entrees of sole and scallops were perfectly prepared. Too full for dessert, we were delighted with the cookies served with the tea. Highly recommend!
One of the best seafood restaurants in Boston!!
We had a wonderful experience at Mooncusser. Every dish we ordered was delicious and beautifully prepared, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the ambience was elegant without being fussy. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Third floor walk up is a problem. Three of four dishes were excellent but main course of Tuna pasta was not. Had difficulty finding any tuna in the dish. That was disappointing. Coffee was cold. Restaurant has a lot of potential, but did not quite realize it last night. I will try again.
The food was outstanding, and I mean outstanding. My wife, generally, doesn't love seafood. But she loved this. Service was slightly slow. But, to be fair, I'm somewhat impatient. It was the best restaurant I've been to in years.
Great meal, pleasant spot, but noise level ultimately detracted from the experience.
Very nice restaurant with fresh seafood and the service is great too!
Great experience! I came here for a business dinner with several people from the Boston area and several from Europe. It was an excellent meal and everyone left remarking that we will be back! The food was excellent and appealed to our guests from overseas looking for New England fare, but also met the needs of our discerning Boston natives. The chowder was a hit, the fish was cooked perfectly, and the cocktails and wine were also excellent.
Great food and atmosphere. Service is slow. Not the first time either.
Food was excellent
Consistently high quality and tasty food. One of the best restaurants in Boston.
Lovely beautiful food. Pretty room with interesting views. Looking forward to coming back.
This restaurant is a hidden gem. The food, service and ambiance are all 5-stars. I'm a foodie and this was one of the better meals I've had ... ever. My good friend and I dined on Saturday evening. We were greeted by Trevor at the front host stand. His bright and positive demeanor started the evening off to a great start. I tried two oysters to start - one of each on special - they were perfectly chilled and delicious. We took advantage of the prix fixe $49 deal, which is a steal. I started with the mackerel crudo and my friend had the grilled squid salad - both were out of this world. The two of us gasped when we ate our first bites. For main meal - I had the swordfish and my friend the scallops. The flavors were well integrated and fresh. One small complaint - two of the scallops were a bit overcooked, but still very flavorful. And, they serve you five scallops, which is a generous portion. The desserts were beautiful to look at and tasted even better. You can't go wrong by eating here. The service from everyone is top notch and the food memorable.
We had oysters and salmon pate for appetizers in the downstairs casual bar area. Everything was delicious. We then headed upstairs for our dinner where the ambience was very nice and more intimate. The service was excellent -- personable, knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoyed the prix fixe menu option - every choice was a standout - from the salads, chowder, scallops and sole dishes. The desserts were also exquisite - the crème brulee one of the best we've had!
Been here a number of times, but dined here last night (Saturday) and it was sooo slow. Time we waited between entrees was way too long. I'll be honest, we weren't the only ones that were wondering what was taking too long. I'll rethink dining here again.
Delicious food- excellent service- nice wine list-- We love 80 Thoreau and are delighted to add this new seafood-focused sister restaurant to our list of favorites!
Downstairs and upstairs are two different experiences. All staff were excellent and attentive. Food very good. Drinks from the menu top notch.
My humble opinion is they need to invest a little more in the Moon Bar to make it a place I would go exclusive of the restaurant.
Had to leave before main course due to over 40 minutes between salads and the entrees. Planned for two hours total before theatre event but something must have happened in the kitchen and it was never explained.
This is the best true seafood restaurant is Boston. The food never disappoints.
The upstairs restaurant (Mooncusser) was excellent, and we would go back. Innovative cuisine, very good service, pleasing decor and space. We were underwhelmed by the downstairs bar (Moon Bar) as we went there for a pre-drink. It has a completely different vibe and quality level and detracted from our overall experience.
So, skip the bar, and just head up the stairs to the restaurant proper.
I would begin by saying that the staff especially our server was very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable.
The food was very good particularly the scallop dish but the wine list was limited and somewhat disappointing. Atmosphere was cool and overall pleasant. My largest objection was the pricing !
I understand that Valentines Day is a premier restaurant evening but to double the prix-fixe dinner from $49.95 to $95.00 per person seems exorbitant ! The overall value of our evening was definitely skewed because of this policy. We may try Mooncusser again but not too soon !
One of the best restaurants in Boston, Mooncusser balances fine dinning and great service with a cozy, small and friendly environment. The food is some of the best you have ever tasted with the combination of flavors. If you want a great date, anniversary or other special occasion spot, Mooncusser is it. A nice addition is heading over to Moon Bar downstairs after dinner.
Awesome customer service, delicious food and drinks. It was a Valentine’s Day date. My fiancé and I love seafood and this place didn’t disappoint and what a nice touch at the end when they brought us our check, they gifted a single Rose to my fiancé, beautiful! It was our first time here and we will definitely repeat on a normal day to see what other wonderful gems they have on their menu. Highly recommend this place!
Terrific meal. Our waitperson, Mara, was great, answering all our questions and making great recommendations. We really enjoyed our early Valentine’s Day/anniversary dinner here.
It was a slow rainy evening before the show, so rather quiet and not much action. Being in the Biz, I recognize that its hard to have your mojo & A game on. Having said that, our Cocktail in the downstairs was terrific. Unique, well balanced and simply delicious. A stand out for me was the Mackerel Crudo. I get that it is a simple dish but Mackerel being Mackerel I was interested in how "fresh from the sea" it would be. All I will say about that is Mooncusser buyer & supplier knocked it out of the park & Chef showed it well. My date and I had the Prix Fix menu and it was of good value and quite well executed. We'll be back.
First time there. Already plotting our next dinner there.
This was our second visit to this restaurant and we had learned our lesson in making sure that we told them ahead of time that we were attending an 8:00pm show. They made sure to mention that as soon as we arrived and we were able to enjoy three courses and still make it to the show. I had the baby spinach salad, which was a wonderful combination of flavors and dressed lightly. My partner enjoyed the poke bowl and it was also good. The scallops were a little over cooked, but otherwise very good. The sole was cooked well. We enjoyed the creme brule for dessert and the portion was the perfect amount.
Great place to celebrate a birthday meal in a neat spot of Boston. I loved that the restaurant overlooked the Boston castle. The food was excellent! The service provided was top-notch.
To whom chooses wine/liquor: you are a rock star. The listings were phenomenal.
Fine dining at an intimate scale
The seafood preparations inventive, the service is spot-on and the design/location, make this a sophisticated urban oasis.
You will want to keep it a secret–but that's not fair
service was pretty slow. no one asked if we wanted more bread.
Fresh great food prepared very well. I did not know it was a hike upstairs. Ambiance is lovely.
Lovely atmosphere--a horizontally small space in which the reception and bar is on first floor, kitchen and restrooms on 2, and dining room on 3--that had excellent service. I enjoyed perusing the menu, which included a number of creative combinations. My starter, a creation of tender grilled squid with Brussels sprouts, herbs, and fish sauce was good but salty, likely due to too much fish sauce (but not so bad that I had to send it back). My entrée was a scallop dish that was great but I would have cooked the scallops less. Overall I liked this place and will try it again.
Loved my dinner at Mooncusser! I got the fixed price menu for $49, appetizer, main course and dessert. Salmon pate was delicious, sole was crazy good and the chocolate tart with coconut sorbet was fabulous! Stuart even gave us 3 oz pours of paired wines, very reasonably priced and perfectly matched. Thank you for a wonderful evening, I will be back many times.
Good job by all involved. The service was especially good.
Hidden Gem - Food and Service was fantastic. 3 Course Dinner with a set price. Portions were perfectly sized.
Excellent food excellent experience
My friends and I went out on Saturday night and had a fabulous meal at Mooncusser! I have been a couple times before and was incredibly excited to see they had added a fun and innovative cocktail menu! I enjoyed a an apple jalapeño sour before our meal and it was delicious. Our favorite dishes was the tuna tartare and the sole - super delicate & delicious with a lick-your-plate good lobster reduction. Server helped us pick from several different oyster varieties for our first course and was very knowledgeable about all of them. I was so impressed! Overall great meal and can’t wait to go back.
