This place seems a little confused about who it wants to be; it has an upscale industrial decor and a modern, open-air feel, but it is also a morning coffee cafe in the same space. It would appear to be a nice place for a nice celebration dinner, but no dress code means your celebration is sitting next to shirts, tshirts, & flipflops.
The food was mixed; none of it was horrible, some of it was good. The black eyed peas were good, and the loaded mac with thick cuts if bacon was really good, but the rib eye wasn't seasoned very well and was a but tough, despite it being ordered medium well.
After reading the recent reviews, I thought I would give the restaurant a try; thinking maybe the cook had a bad day. Upon arrival, the hostess was very nice and we joked about the summer cocktails I would try. The tried the tropical delight and pineapple paradise. Both drinks were good.
The salad was really good but my entree had absolutely no flavor. I ordered the country fried steak. The tenderness was appropriate but I couldn’t overcome how bland it was. The sweet potato mash was really good along with the vegetable medley. I would have been fine with ordering the two sides and not the entree.
I would go back for drinks but not the food.
Very dissapointing. It was our second time. The first time was excellent. Menu items were prepared incorrectly, steak was well done instead of medium rare. Wrong pasta was used. They tried to shoehorn a reservation for seven into a booth for five, even though there were numerous empty tables. The waitress had no clue about how the food should have been prepared and was not concerned about correcting it. She had difficulty splitting the check at the end. It is obvious either the chef from our first visit left, or the B team was on staff for this visit. They did remove two of the meals from the check due to poor qualty, and the others were marginal at best.
A great place to go for a special night out. The food is outstanding. Try the absolutely brilliant Fried Green Tomatoes stuffed with goat cheese! The chef uses herbs and spices and locally sourced products very creatively in all of the menu items. This has become our new favorite spot.
We were there for a Mother’s Day brunch. The food was only lukewarm. Food was not always quickly replenished. The waitress never brought a requested item to our table. There were not plates located on all the serving tables. $47pp was a lot to pay for what we got.
My catfish on sweet potato mash with grape - walnut chutney was delicious. Hubby’s ribs with roast Brussels sprouts and fries were delicious, hearty, and a bargain at only $15.90! Service was excellent, and the hotel is very stylish, in a contemporary mode.
Really nice restaurant. Just wish the breakfast buffet food was warmer. Also we hoped the bar would be available Thursday night after JMU graduation.
The menu has a variety of tempting options. We have eaten there several times for both lunch and dinner, and we’ve always had great food and a nice experience.
Hostess was very friendly and we were promptly seated. Party of 5 on a Tuesday evening so not crowded. Waiter was not versed on gluten free choices. Service was very good. Food quality wax excellent. Appetizers were a nice portion size for the money. However, the dinner portions were small for the money. Three in our party had the salmon and it was not worth $27 a plate. Small portions for that amount of money. Overall, a good restaurant but needs improvement.

Food was excellent - convenient location as we were touring JMU and staying at Hotel Madison.
We were the last seating for Easter brunch. They had run out of shrimp and seafood salad and the lamb was tough and over cooked. Some of the food was cold. While I realize that special occasion brunches are generally overpriced and this was no exception, I think we should have had the same menu options as earlier diners. We got a shrug and an oh well, we ran out. These guys were anxious to clean up and go home. Disappointing because we’ve dined there before and the food is exceptional.
We were there for Easter Brunch. The food was okay and it’s probably because our reservation wasn’t till 1:30pm. The salmon was bland and dry and by then time I got to the dessert table, all that was left was the crepe brûlée that was obviously had been sitting there for a while. For the food that was served, I thought it was overpriced. It was definitely not worth the $50 per person meal, but this is always expected on holidays.
Outstanding Easter Brunch. The food was delicious and plentiful. The only thing they ran out of was a fabulous dessert - berries soaked in white wine and topped with chocolate mousse. Luckily there were many more options available. Service is much improved since last Fall. Chef came to our table to make sure we were enjoying our meal. We had a memorable experience with our JMU students and will return again.
Lovely Sunday Easter Brunch. The Chef Ryan Youngman was gracious and took the time to give us a "tour" of the dessert bar where he described in detail the ingredients and assembly of each dessert. The lamb chops and mint sauce were delicious. The sweet potato mash had an interesting combination of spices like cumin. Our server Madyson was delightful, helpful and cheerful throughout our meal. We were accommodated when the height of the table where we were initially seated was too tall.
Easter Sunday brunch
We’ve enjoyed meals at Montpelier several times previously but the Easter brunch buffet was outstanding. Very nice selection of items, all well prepared. Eggs Benedict bar was terrific! Service has improved significantly since the restaurant first opened.

Everything was delicious - a very pleasant surprise. A hidden gem-more people should know about Montpelier!
The wait staff was good, but the kitchen staff is not well managed. Appetizer (goat cheese) was very good but came at the same time as entrees despite our specific request to have them separate. One entree was undercooked (cold/raw) and had to be sent back. The waiter was very understanding and comped us for the issues. I saw similar issues in previous feedback. The management team needs help.
I really wanted to like this restaurant. The food was good but arrived so late that we did not have time to eat it before going to a show at the Forbes Center. I hope the service will improve.
The food and service were both great. The goat cheese brûlée appetizer was excellent. Her salmon was very good if not for being a bit of a small cut. My New York strip on the other hand was huge and also excellent. The chocolate fondant cake dessert was good even though the first time was not heated through and had to be sent back. The second go round of the dessert was a little warmer so we kept it although it still should've been a little warmer (the dessert was comped so that eased things a bit).
Great new restaurant in the Harrisonburg VA area. Amazing food choices (try the seafood pappardelle) and a good selection of beers and wines. Reasonable prices. Will definitely be stopping by again.
Overall we enjoyed the experience and I would recommend to a friend but would NOT recommend certain menu items. The meat and cheese on the nachos were cold but overall flavor good. The caeser was dry and tasteless and had some brown romaine in it. The filet was VERY tough, leatherlike and grissly, I took home for my pooch. The porkbelly was also dry and tough and the creme brulee' was a cold paste leaving a film in my mouth. Did not finish. We understand it is a relatively new restaurant and would give it another shot before deciding not to come back. The staff was great and accommodating.
We expected a more upscale restaurant for Hotel Madison. We were disappointed to find ourselves in a bar restaurant. The food was decent, but overpriced for what it was. The not a chair, but not really a bar stool seating in the back was uncomfortable. As a tall person, it was awkward to have my feat dangling while I was eating. Most of the wines on the list were not available. We overheard that many of the food options were also not available.
Had a lovely evening at Montpelier on Saturday night! This was my first visit to the restaurant (even though I'm a JMU employee!), certainly will not be my last! The service (John) was enthusiastic and helpful. I had the scallops with rissoto & grilled asparagus which was fantastic. Enjoyed the ambience! There was an issue with not enough menus (we had to wait to see a menu after being seated...and our party of 6 ultimately shared 2 menus), not really a problem but something that should be corrected. My husband and I will definitely be back, a great addition to the 'Burg!
The food was outstanding. It’s rare that a restaurant has innovative foods, fresh ingriedients, quality plating and executes them all. We will definitely be back!
Good service. Good food, but they were out of their signature entree, their signature dessert, and most popular craft beers, on a quiet Wednesday night no less!
Great place for a friend’s birthday dinner! We enjoyed the southern comfort food. The goat cheese brûlée was TO DIE FOR!
The food was tasty and prepared well. The bar area is cozy and inviting, but the restaurant interior isn't very warm. Our waiter was nice, but not very prepared. Couldn't really answer any of our questions... with that said, it's definitely a good place to eat, and the prices were pretty good for what you received.
This is a lovely spot. Had a really good chopped salad with shrimp on top. Our server was super friendly but not as attentive as she should’ve been. I would definitely go back here as the food was excellent and the ambience is too.
Food was out of this world! Bartenders need a little work on mix drinks, but still good drinks
I'm so bummed. It is apparent that there have been many changes since the last time we ate here (before Christmas 2018). The food and presentation used to be magical. Now it's just food. Everything we ordered last night we had previously eaten. It's the same menu from before but the magic is gone. The dinners went from tasting fantastic to being just ok and it now feels overpriced. : ( It's such a shame. Back to the Local Chop and Grill we go for date night.
The staff was not knowledgeable regarding the menu. Waitress did not know what “sustainable” salmon was. She nor did another staff member know where the salmon came from. Both said the Chesapeake bay (no salmon). A 3rd waiter said Norfolk but that was the distributor.
The table was not cleared of dishes after we finished our dinner. We had to clear them to another table.
Food was satisfactory. The Mac and cheese was probably the most favorable.
Food was very good. Service was fine. The restaurant was not very crowded, so the lower noise level may not be the case on a busy evening.
Avoid going here or you will leave disappointed and hungry, because as it stands the dishes being served will make you lose your appetite, not whet it. I have been here on three separate occasions in the course of their 6 months in operation, once for appetizers, once for Brunch and once for dinner. Each time there has been a slew of technical errors and dishes that can’t possibly be being served the way the Chef envisioned. Some examples are: disproportionate serving sizes, moldy bread, undercooked (raw) egg, unseasoned items, side dishes cooked ahead of time and thus ruined, hot entrees on cold plates and monochromatic items are just a few. As a Chef myself, I understand that a lot falls to the Chef and can’t always be controlled but there are technical errors and training of the and kitchen line/expeditor that should take place. I am vain enough to want to be invited in as a consultant to help this Chef realize the vision had for the dishes and get the staff on the same page for the success of Montpelier.
The food and service were excellent but the noise level was unacceptable . We were seated initially close to the bar and asked to be relocated.
Our server, Morgan, was outstanding! She was so patient with us as we took our time enjoying cocktails and appetizers before ordering entrees. She was knowledgeable of the menu and offered excellent suggestions when I couldn't decide between the many excellent options. She recommended the scallops appetizer, which was one of tonight's specials, and it was AMAZING! The scallops were buttery and cooked to perfection. Also, the fried green tomatoes are a must! If there was ever any doubt about an item, she happily went to ask for clarification to be sure that our experience was excellent. We will definitely return and ask for Morgan's section!
