Montpelier Restaurant & Bar
Great place for a friend’s birthday dinner! We enjoyed the southern comfort food. The goat cheese brûlée was TO DIE FOR!
The food was tasty and prepared well. The bar area is cozy and inviting, but the restaurant interior isn't very warm. Our waiter was nice, but not very prepared. Couldn't really answer any of our questions... with that said, it's definitely a good place to eat, and the prices were pretty good for what you received.
This is a lovely spot. Had a really good chopped salad with shrimp on top. Our server was super friendly but not as attentive as she should’ve been. I would definitely go back here as the food was excellent and the ambience is too.
Food was out of this world! Bartenders need a little work on mix drinks, but still good drinks
I'm so bummed. It is apparent that there have been many changes since the last time we ate here (before Christmas 2018). The food and presentation used to be magical. Now it's just food. Everything we ordered last night we had previously eaten. It's the same menu from before but the magic is gone. The dinners went from tasting fantastic to being just ok and it now feels overpriced. : ( It's such a shame. Back to the Local Chop and Grill we go for date night.
The staff was not knowledgeable regarding the menu. Waitress did not know what “sustainable” salmon was. She nor did another staff member know where the salmon came from. Both said the Chesapeake bay (no salmon). A 3rd waiter said Norfolk but that was the distributor.
The table was not cleared of dishes after we finished our dinner. We had to clear them to another table.
Food was satisfactory. The Mac and cheese was probably the most favorable.
Food was very good. Service was fine. The restaurant was not very crowded, so the lower noise level may not be the case on a busy evening.
Avoid going here or you will leave disappointed and hungry, because as it stands the dishes being served will make you lose your appetite, not whet it. I have been here on three separate occasions in the course of their 6 months in operation, once for appetizers, once for Brunch and once for dinner. Each time there has been a slew of technical errors and dishes that can’t possibly be being served the way the Chef envisioned. Some examples are: disproportionate serving sizes, moldy bread, undercooked (raw) egg, unseasoned items, side dishes cooked ahead of time and thus ruined, hot entrees on cold plates and monochromatic items are just a few. As a Chef myself, I understand that a lot falls to the Chef and can’t always be controlled but there are technical errors and training of the and kitchen line/expeditor that should take place. I am vain enough to want to be invited in as a consultant to help this Chef realize the vision had for the dishes and get the staff on the same page for the success of Montpelier.
The food and service were excellent but the noise level was unacceptable . We were seated initially close to the bar and asked to be relocated.
Our server, Morgan, was outstanding! She was so patient with us as we took our time enjoying cocktails and appetizers before ordering entrees. She was knowledgeable of the menu and offered excellent suggestions when I couldn't decide between the many excellent options. She recommended the scallops appetizer, which was one of tonight's specials, and it was AMAZING! The scallops were buttery and cooked to perfection. Also, the fried green tomatoes are a must! If there was ever any doubt about an item, she happily went to ask for clarification to be sure that our experience was excellent. We will definitely return and ask for Morgan's section!
The food was excellent; the service and ambiance were fine but, despite indicating that it was my wife’s birthday (and a special one), the restaurant did nothing to acknowledge it.
The oysters were overwhelmingly spicy. It detracted from the excellent way they were prepared. However, the fried green tomatoes were well done!
Outstanding a southern comfort food spot!! Char grilled oysters are the bomb!!! This is our go to spot if we're in town!!
Quiet night in the restaurant. Have been on several occasions and service has been fair at best. On this quiet evening service was above average. Server was knowledgable.
Very uneven on food. Two entrees were well executed and well presented. Side dishes were not very tasty. Both of the other two entrees were steaks that were mis-cooked — one too well done; the other way undercooked for medium rare, and was not replaced with correctly cooked one during the meal. Waitress did all she could to ameliorate the situation, and was appropriately apologetic. Adjustments made to final bill, but certainly was not a premier dining experience. Desserts were nice.
This is fairly new restaurant — but will need to improve considerably for us to patronize again.
Overall, a great dinner. We will come back to enjoy it again.
Terrific downtown restaurant in Harrisonburg, VA. Garage parking available along with validation of parking ticket. Southern style, locally sourced menu items. Great atmosphere.
I am trying to be very fair because our first impression of Montpelier Restaurant & Bar was not a good one. Sometimes restaurants have an "off night" and I don't want to punish the chef and back of the house for what is clearly an issue with the front of the house. Upon arriving, we waited 10-15 minutes to be seated. There were no other guests waiting to be seated. The hostess station was empty except for the cell phone that was left thereby (presumably) the missing hostess. Since the station is not within eye-sight of the bar or rest of the restaurant, nobody saw us or acknowledged that we were standing there. After waiting for a few minutes, we walked into the bar/restaurant area (there is a long corridor). Again, we stood there. Servers were looking at us, it was obvious it was nobody's job to help us. Finally the bartender acknowledged us. We waited. Then a person that looked like the hostess (but could have been the manager) said, oh did you just make the reservation? I was shocked. I thought, so you knew we were coming and we still waited for 15 minutes.
Montpelier Restaurant & Bar offered very good food in a nice atmosphere. Our server was very nice and attentive. The food taste was delicious and well prepared. Both my guest and I thought that the food temperature could have been a bit hotter. Our dishes were warm but it felt like it sat on the line a bit to long.
This restaurant is newer and perhaps it just needs a few months to run a bit smoother. We came into Harrisonburg for an event and I do wish I liked the restaurant more because a delicious go-to place when we are in town would be perfect.
We thoroughly enjoyed the Montpelier. The food was outstanding and we appreciate the opportunity to convey our praise to the chef. We started with the Montpelier's signature nachos and brisket. This app was just what we needed to get rev our appetites in preparation for the entrees.
The only thing that I considered slightly disappointing is that our table had to be assembled behind the ordering station for the wait staff. Granted we were not the largest group present for graduation weekend(our daughter graduated from JMU) I was hoping for a more cozy spot within the restaurant rather than a thoroughfare.
Lastly, our server could not have been more attentive.
A pleasant surprise to find reasonably priced, good tasting food and a menu with variety near JMU campus.
The restaurant was pretty empty. Snow storm outside. The food was good. Nice to have such a place in Harrisonburg
Our go-to restaurant used to the Local Chop and Grill. Not anymore. Montpelier has upped the food game in the valley! What a treat to have in Harrisonburg! I've been telling all my friends about this place! The service is always great, the menu is diverse, and the food is always excellent. Their wine selection is outstanding and their cocktails are delicious! The best part about this restaurant is that it's versatile. They have a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu. It's definitely a restaurant that's both perfect for a date night, and a day or night out with the family. There is something for everyone, and in everyone's price range. My family is excited about the upcoming event, "Breakfast with Santa!" Build-Your-Own pancake station for the kids, ornament making, cookie and gingerbread house decorating?!?! Um, yes please!!
I made the reservation after reading the reviews and looking at menu. I didn’t know it was in the new JW Marriott on JMU campus. Parking was confusing. Called restaurant and was told where to park if I didn’t want valet.
The wine list is small, but has a wide selection of inexpensive to expensive wines. Nice list
Unfortunately, the server was never trained how to serve red wine. She opened the bottle and filled both our glasses without any opportunity to taste prior to the full pour. I explained the etiquette of serving wine to her. She stated that she hadn’t been trained yet. A major flaw of putting staff on the floor as servers without proper training. She was very sweet and listened to my careful explanation. Management failed.
The cornbread was moist and tasty. Biscuits were dry and tasteless.
I had the foie gras which was presented beautifully and prepared to perfection! It was delicious!!
The fried chicken was tasty. The vegetables were over cooked and too oily. They were remade and were better.
The tomahawk steak was served PERFECTLY. Perfect temperature and flavor. Not over salted or buttery. One of the best.
The candied mashed sweet potatoes was amazing.
I spoke with the chef and complimented his cooking and gave some constructive criticism. He was very receptive.
We enjoyed our first visit to Mt Peliar. Staff was pleasant, but server needs more training. He did not know his menu and repeatedly returned to the kitchen for help. Food was very good.
The receptionist didn't mark us as having arrived on time for our reservation so I got many emails from OpenTable. Annoying.
Relatively new, food was delicious, but served not very warm. Servuce was slow and forgot things. I highly recommend the nachos. I’m willing to go back and give it another try. Fingers crossed.
The food was delicious and overall we had a lovely evening. As a newer restaurant, it seemed the service was still working out kinks i.e. slow to bring water to the table , some confusion with seating. Once our order was placed though, the service was fine and the food selections were interesting and tasty.
One meal was very, very expensive; however, it was missing half of what it was supposed to have. Even chef was unaware. It was not charged, but still - staff doesn't know menu. And false fire alarm went off 3 times. Far too expensive for what we ate.
Incredible menu here! We were so impressed with the atmosphere, the food and the service. Great addition to Harrisonburg dining scene.
Delicious nachos and the creme brûlée is outstanding!
Good food & service, but seating at table for 2 against large window next to main hotel driveway was chilly and view was distracting.
While traveling north on I81, we checked OpenTable for a lunch spot. The menu looked appetizing at the Montpelier Restaurant at the Madison Hotel. Not being from Harrisonburg, we were expecting an older, vintage inn. This hotel is brand new construction and the restaurant just opened a few months ago. They had a good selection of dishes at reasonable prices. We chose the fried chicken, which was delicious, accompanied by generous slices of watermelon, great collards, and excellent creamed corn. A very nice surprise to break up a long drive north.
Wow. Attentive staff, great menu, and terrific food. Will definitely be back!
What a great addition the the JMU campus. Location is fabulous, service was terrific and food was so delicious!
We enjoyed trying the new restaurant but the server was very frazzled and didn't know the menu. The price is a lot for the food we ordered. They did cook my husband's steak perfectly!
Some of the best food in the area. Great service and atmosphere.
We really enjoyed celebrating our daughter's birthday here. Easily accessible for guest in wheelchair. Wait staff was very attentive. Lunch ends at 2:30 and dinner starts at 5:00 so plan accordingly or you'll have to order from the bar menu, although it is good. The hamburger is delicious!
Great menu at the bar and in the dining area. Service, cocktails and food all exceptional. Brisket nachos a big hit with everyone!
Table for 5 at 6:30. Seated right away, was a quiet Monday evening. Not too many tables. Service and food was impeccable. Our server, John did an outstanding job. Was professional, attentive but not too much so as it was meeting and he picked up that we didn’t want to be constantly interrupted. However we never had to ask for our water to be refilled and we received free coffee refills at the end of the evening. The chef even brought out an amuse-bouche, a tasty bite from the kitchen that was much appreciated. The food is outstanding and I will certainly be back.
